  1. He really isn't getting the pub he deserves. We've got our catcher.
  2. Honestly, I'm pleased with the assessment, especialky the power and speed, but I thought he may actually have gotten a 64 or 70 potential hit tool. But I think highly of Amaya......
  3. Thete's too many closers available this offseason for Marmol to be dealt, in my opinion. Yeah, a team may look at him as a set up guy, but with the probable return, he's most likely worth more to us just keeping him.
  4. We have $100 allotment to go towards waiver pickups that you have to place by Tuesday. Wednesday is when you find out if you get the guys or not and the rest of the week is free pickups until the player has started their game, unless you decide you need to place money on someone that had just been dropped. Two day waiver clearance for those guys.
  5. Barring any trades, we have Marmol and Russell. That's really it. I expect Corpas back, 3rd year of arb, still fairly young, probably won't cost more than a mill and a half, at most. I'm sure we'll sign some more Camp types-old vets on minor league deals. Bowden may have a legit chance, he seems to be pitching better this second time. My guess is Beliveau makes the team, along with one of Dolis or Cabrera as a potential power arm. But there are plenty of vets out there that'll be signing one year deals, like Durbin, Rauch, etc and I definitely see us adding one or two of those type guys. It would at least make the pen passable and leave room to continue the tryout process for some of the young guys to shuttle back and forth.
  6. To me, 2 years is all that counts, because this group wasn't here for last year. We sucked this year obviously and appear to be headed towards a 100 loss season, or at least awfully close to it. Next year, if we sign the same type gys we did this past offseason(although I think we'll be slightly more active and get slightly better results) we'll likely lose 90ish games again, but have more holes filled longterm. That offseason, I'd expect much more positive movement. No, I don't expect us to win 90 games in 2014 at this point, maybe more like you said, 75-80ish. But you've got a young, improving team, with a solid system and flexibility as well, because I don't think we'll ever deplete the system. But I would expect a solid trade or two at that point. Hell, I expect another Rizzo type trade THIS offseason, to bring us in some pitching help. But I envision a team with lots of younger cost controlled players not making a ton of money and us having lots of funds to use on FA heading into 2014. Whether they spend big or just add thru trade at that point, who knows? But I have no doubt that they'll ante up for a bigtime FA at some point soon thereafter. And it won't kill us if he doesn't pan out either.
  7. Marcum and McCarthy have injury history. I can see short term deals for either, regardless of how their season ends. Maybe it's 2 years, or one and an option, but I can't see either getting a longterm deal right now. I'm not sure I follow what you just said about our prospects being on our team, if we sign FA. Yeah, they would be, but who's out there to sign and put us in the playoffs? I'd rather win 65 than 83, due to the draft positioning, IFA money, and flexibility moving on. Cespedes is the only guy I wish we had already gotten, but even now, Upton's going to be out there and while he's likely to cost a bit more, we can still go get him, if we want to. I'd rather build up the prospect inventory so when the time comes we can trade for true impact guys, and still have leftovers that can help us. An extra year of high picks and IFA money makes it much easier to do, than if we go out and lose flexibility and win 80ish games next year, in the process.
  8. They're all going to be scary, that's the point. The difference though, is we'll have the prospects to trade away by the time 2014 comes around. No, we don't know who will be available, but it'll be some guys who are good. It always is. I'd rather wait and dip heavy into FA when we ARE a contender and not beforehand, to where at least the first couple years of whatever exorbitant deals we eventually hand out, has a much better chance of being the best years of that deal.
  9. This upcoming offseason, even moreso than last year's is not set up for us to make major moves. I can't really see us trading away major pieces from our system yet either, unless someone like Upton, Price, Felix, or someone like that becomes available. Even then, I kind of doubt we're in a true position to go after those types without emptying out quite a bit. But the main FA out there all have tremendous red flags that could and should scare us off. Greinke with his social anxiety disorder, hamilton with his drug problem. And that's about it as far as guys that'll get over 100 mill go. Does anyone want Swisher for 5/90ish? I don't. I'm definitely interested in BJ Upton, but at what price? I think I'd go all the way to 5/75 or so myself, but I understand if the FO thought differently on that one. Michael Bourn? We don't really need him. Edwin Jackson or Annibal Sanchez? Yeah, I'm interested, but with the lack of pitching available, I figure both get 4-5 year deals and I'd just as son grab guys like Marcum and McCarthy(possibly, if he gets better) on one year deals, to keep the flexibility moving forward.
  10. While I agree with that sentiment, I doubt he's increased his value much honestly. So I think I'd probably just go ahead and pencil him into our rotation for a few years, unless we surprise everyone with a few name additions.
  11. What do you think of Wood at this point? I know you were high on him bigtime, but it seems like you soured quite a bit. I think he's a serviceable 5 on a good team going forward, but probably not much upside from that.
  12. If we go back to the very beginning of when we heard he was getting a shot at the rotation, I find it hard to imagine anyone thought he'd have had the season he did.
  13. I still can't see Volstad being here next year, even as a reliever. As far as Shark goes, I have no clue what he winds up as, but a true 1 has to be considered at least, as a possibility. Easily the best thing to happen for the Cubs in 2012.
  14. At this point, Whitson's probably closer to going nearer or 2nd round pick than our 1st. I hate to say I want him to struggle, but it'd be great to get him in the 2nd, aling with Stanek or Manaea in the 1st. Terribly slim shot, but all bets are off if he's not any better than last year.
  15. I think Valbuena's on the team in some capacity next season, which is more than I would have said a month or two ago.
  16. I could see us trading some borderline guys for him. You're probably right though in that they won't nontender him, I didn't realize their staff was currently as big a mess as it is. But he seems like a guy we could target. 2 arb years left, underperforming, probably has some upside left.
  17. 3rd year of arb, getting expensive, no real production.....You may be right though, their rotation is awful. I do expect them to be in on basically every FA pitcher, other than Greinke though and figure they'll land two. They've got Odorizzi ready and Duffy coming back. Chen is there. At any rate, Hochevar seems like a guy that may not be there one way or another.
  18. Do other GMs still think that Barney can play shortstop? If so that's a start, obviously you are going to have to add something very good in to pry a young pitcher away though. I believe so. Not the caliber of SS as he is at 2B obviously, but I'd be shocked if most don't consider him a league average SS defensively and if not for his range, he'd be better than that, is my guess.
  19. Some possible nontender candidates and guys falling out of favor, even if they won't be let go...... Luke Hochevar, Jair Jurrjens, Mike Pelfrey, John Lannan, Dustin Moseley Brian Matusz, Jake Arrieta, Daniel Bard, Jeff Niemann, Chris Narveson, Charlie Morton First group, I expect to get nontendered, second group is guys I could see possibly being able to be dealt for at a bargain, assuming they're kept around.(and no, I'm not advocating dealing for any of them, just expect them on the market possibly)
  20. Oh, I thought the package you proposed was solid honestly, but it'd come down to whether they look at him as a Rich Harden type or not, injury-wise. I was always surprised we got him for what we did and no one offered more. If teams are scared off for some reason and Oakland isn't sold on him staying healthy, that type of package could work. I think the gist here though, is find a team with plenty of young pitching and try to trade some of our position players for one. Oakland and Atlanta are the best bets for sure. Oakland needs a 3B and a SS, possibly a DH type as well. Atlanta needs a 3B or 2B(depending on what they do with Uggla), a CF, and possibly a LF as well(depending on Prado). Pitching-wise Oakland has Milone, Anderson, Straily, Parker, Griffin, Blackley, Ross, and Gray. The Braves have Beachy, Hudson, Hanson, Maholm, Medlen, Minor, Delgado, Teheran, and Gilmartin. There's gotta be a trade somewhere that fits for those two teams somewhere with us.
  21. Villanueva has to be added.
  22. I brought Anderson up a few weeks back, but veered away from him on this one, because he's come back so strong and they're contending still. Could be extremely hard to trade for him.
  23. We'd need to lose 5 of 6 to them, maybe all 6. I just can't see it.
  24. Yeah, he can stay.
