  1. A Cubs fan asked Law in his chat today about the draft and positioning. Law said there would be a bigger dropoff from picking 4-6, than picking 2-4.
  2. Szczur made an appearance last year on BA's top 100, no one else's and his star has dimmed quite a bit, to say the least. Lee was ascending at that time, Law and Piliere both had him top 50. Piliere may have even had him top 25. At any rate, the value is no where close to comparable. Not to mention, it's James Shields. He's decent, but I'd rather give up much more for someone much better, if we want to upgrade the staff.
  3. A SS who can't hit, an erratic 4th starter/setup man, a 4th OF, and bits of string? We should be able to cobble that together. Sure. Who's the erratic 4th starter in our system that's currently a top 50 prospect or the light hitting SS that's a top 100 guy? Sappelt, Campana, and Clevenger equal the 3 bits of string.
  4. Yeah, but that's certainly changing now. Next year will be very interesting. Honestly, Struck had a better year than I thought too. I guess he should get rostered too. Still doubt he winds up more than a reliever, but he had a very solid AA season for being 22. They really rushed him the previous year. Guess I forgot that.
  5. Struck named pitcher of the year.
  6. The Rays wanted a package close to what they got for Garza, for Shields.
  7. I seriously doubt the plan is for the Boise Hawks to all reach the majors and establish themselves. Once they're established in Kane County or Daytona, the vast majority will likely be dealt away.
  8. Kyle, there's a quote from Hoyer in one of the articles from tonight(I think Sullivan) that Hoyer says any baseball ops money left unspent can be spent in the future. Good news on that front anyway.
  9. The point being there may never be another good FA class and teams needing to build from within......
  10. Logan Watkins evidently has been named Cubs Minor League POY, according to a congrats tweet from Michael Brenly.
  11. While true, he was on the block before he got hurt before the deadline. So they don't like him too much evidently.
  12. I would think he means the stats could be distorted somewhat by facing lesser players fairly often during September. As far as a guy we could go after for 3B though, how about Jed Lowrie? No idea how he is defensively at 3B and he's injury-prone. But he's a solid bat, still relatively young and would give us great flexibility when/if Baez comes around in 2015 or so. We'd have a choice to make with Barney or Lowrie, but Lowrie could play 2B too.
  13. True and thats certainly questionable. But, it'd have a chance to work. If it didn't you can sell off Soriano, DeJesus, Garza, maybe another SP at the deadline and still likely get a top 5 pick anyway and add prospects thru trades as well. May help with attendance somewhat too. Even the flexibility I babble on and on about isn't hurt by this type of offseason.
  14. DeJesus, Castro, Rizzo, Soriano, Upton, Castillo, Barney, Valbuena. If Castro and Rizzo show progress and Castillo is slightly better than keague average offensively, I think it's a middle of the pack offense, isn't it?
  15. Yeah, lip service may have been too strong of a term for him. I guess I hold it against him for not spending more on what he considered a very integral part. And having such a small scouting department. But they did develop some arms under him.
  16. Add a one year bullpen arm to the mix. Is it as good as the Reds or Cards? Giants, Dodgers, Braves, Nats? I doubt it. But it's possible, if Rizzo and Castro progress more. We could even still trade for a young pitcher, by moving Brett and/or Vitters. If it tanks, you've got the pitching shortterm and could still sell off at the deadline anyway.
  17. I understand why quite a few don't get into the minors, based on our previous success rates with prospects. But other teams have much, much better rates and the guys we've brought in are certainly among them. While it was basically lip service from MacPhail and others, it's changing now. From video equipment, to our FO watching at bats every game, better instruction, more instruction, written out goals for every player in the system, bringing teams closer to Chicago to get better looks. Probably lots more, that's just off the top of my head. In years where the major league product is awful, it's great to see so many changes for the better from the bottom up.
  18. If you keep Soriano, add Upton, stay with Valbuena at 3B, add a bullpen arm on a one year deal and sign 2 of McCarthy, Liriano, Marcum, Santana, Villanueva, and Haren, is that a probable playoff team? Conceivably, Upton's the only deal you'd sign for more than 2 years. And it could likely be done keeping the payroll around 100 mill.
  19. 3B is going to be hard to fill. If Brett is dealt or even if he's not, there are solid options for CF either way. I've searched rosters for 3B and I hate to bring up this shitty guy, but I see Casey McGehee as a guy they could bring in to challenge Valbuena. That's how awful the 3B market is. I would love to find a way to trade for Olt. Just don't see it happening.
  20. Whether you're for the rebuild or not, you've got to think our minor leaguers are excited as hell by all the extra attention they're receiving. Very cool to even read about the catered meals. Not sure whether that's the norm and we were just in the Dark Ages though.
  21. Price made 4.35 in his 1st arb year this season. He was a Super Two, so he's not a FA until after 2015. But he'll start getting expensive for the Rays immediately. My hope is they keep him another year and get rid of other pitchers first. Then the following year, when he's likely making 12-15 mill, is when they deal him.
  22. Do we think Price becomes better than a 5 WAR type pitcher? Do we think Castro becomes a 5 WAR SS or more? I think it's debatable on both, so I wouldn't trade 7 years of a very nice contract of Castro for 3 years of Price, then 20 mill a year or more after that.
  23. I hate saying it, but I'm not trading Rizzo. Baez? Sure. Not sure we're really set up to make a deal with them yet though. I hope they wait til next year when we can offer Baez and Almora. Right now though, it'd probaly take Baez and Rizzo, I'm just not a fan of doing that though.
  24. I'll always wonder if we were the team that supposedly outbid the Dodgers for him.
  25. No idea how many innings are needed to qualify for the list, but it wouldn't surprise me if most didn't qualify. Considering what we've heard about Vogelbach's athleticism, I'll also be surprised if he can't play 1B longterm. But I think he is a prime trade piece, probably as soon as he hits in A ball.
