  1. I'm pretty sure our guys have been quoted that they see Vizcaino as a starter. With his innings limited in 2013 and the likely command issues that initially happen after TJS, I fully expect him at Iowa all season on strict pitch counts. Probably gets 100 innings or so.
  2. The timing of Smoltz being brought up is awfully close to the same time Smoltz started talking [expletive] about sabermetrics today. He lost his train of thought on this "new age thinking" though between commercials.
  3. I doubt they thought it'd be half the deal though. At any rate, with his NTC, would he even accept a deal to a rebuilding team? I'm asking, not insinuating, no clue what his priorities would be. To me, the LA teams seem like the best fits for him, when everything is taken under consideration.
  4. Bruno possibly? I think the fact they're giving him reps at C could be very interesting.

Jonny Gomes would make an excellent part of a platoon, with LaHair or DeJesus.
  6. Maples or Lake could be guys you forgot, although I know you're not high on Maples, so I doubt you forgot him.
  7. Carreno, possibly? Not sure where I'd throw him yet, but probably in the 20-25 area.
  8. I couldn't stand Brenly at first, but grew to enjoy him quite a bit. Sutcliffe or bust.
  9. Solid list. I'll disagree on Brett's placement, but a good overall look. At this time next year, I could see us having 3 top 25 guys in Baez, Soler, and Almora. Possibly a 4th, with our 1st rounder in the draft. I could also see Vogelbach, Paniagua, Johnson, and Candelario becoming top 100 types. Not all, but my bet would be 2 anyway. Then, adding prospects thru trades could give us another guy as well. Plus, the huge IFA budget. And if we have a 70 win season or less in 2013, it'd give us that much more. I thinkk we'll end 2013 as a top 5 system easily. And we'll have tons of prospects to trade from at that point, while not gutting the system in the process.

To me, the answer is no. But I guess he's got back end of the pen potential, hopefully he's included in a trade before he takes up a spot.

I'd add Cardenas, Rusin, Parker, and Volstad to that group. We'll be adding McNutt, Watkins, Villanueva, Ben Wells, and possibly Burke, Peralta, and/or Struck back to it.
  12. But even then, doesn't he have to go undrafted before he can sign with an MLB team?
  13. Damn, evidently the Marlins and Yanks have talked about a Bell for ARod swap.
  14. Yeah, I know it's wishful thinking. Can't wait to see what we do with a large IFA budget though.
  15. ARod for Soriano with each team paying off the contract of the guy already on their team. Yankees fans are up in arms about ARod. They hate him. More than I've ever seen. Would Hank pay 119 mill to make him go away? That's a ton of money to send inside of 18 months.
  16. 5 years and 119 mill left. Personally, I don't think ARod is tradable. I can't see the new Steinbrenners paying out the cash it'd take to move him.
  17. They settled on Carreno and cash, instead of another player. We still have a possibility of a PTBNL for Soto still or it could end up as cash too.
  18. Brett made a very simple, but excellent point, on the BN board. He'd be a fool to sign right now, if he comes over. Once the IFA year turns over, there's teams with much more than 2.9 mill to spend. And if he's THAT talented, a team may be willing to give him much more than 2.9. Someone over there said the year won't turn over til the beginning of July, but I'm not remembering seeing that anywhere. Could be right. At any rate, if he bypasses Japan and waits......Who knows? Maybe he's a guy we should blow our entire budget on. And hope some other team won't take the penalty and spend even bigger.
  19. If it's not Bush, I guess it could be Wilken.
  20. Goldstein had him 17th. Their system isn't as deep as ours, so he's likely another guy that fits in between 25-40 for us. If it's true, its not a bad return at all for Baker, who they only kept a month or so themselves.

Stewart made a bit over 2.2 last year. He's not due 1.5 in 2013. If we tender him, the least we can offer is 80% of last years salary. OTOH, I'm not sure he'd even get a guaranteed deal from another team at this point, so we could probably offer him a mill or so with incentives and he'd probably take it.

I didn't bother with the pen, but having Marshall certainly would have put 2011 over 2012. That said, I fully expect we'll get better production out of C, 1B, CF, and probably SS in 2013. LF likely sees a slight decline and I figure 2B, RF and 3B(due to lack of options) stay about the same. SP? I think Shark gets better, we replace Dempsters peripherals, but don't get as lucky as he did out of that spot. Garza is a complete unknown. We'll see the same production out of Maholm with Travis Wood and we'll see a much better option than Volstad. The pen will be better by default. Even if we trade away guys at the deadline, I figure we're likely a 70(woohoo, can't wait for the comments that come with that) win team. That gives the FO enough of a base to make serious moves going forward, that term of contract isn't an issue at all from there on out.
  23. Yeah, its unlikely, but I think that exempts him from the IFA rules.

    2013

Heading into last offseason, we had Soto at C. Given the exact situations of him and Castillo, we're better off now. We have Rizzo, instead of nothing. Again, much, much better off now obviously. Barney and Castro are the same, just older. Thats a wash unless we figure they'll improve. Which I suspect Castro will. 3B was nothing and still is. Soriano is a wash. Byrd to nothing? I'd call THAT a wash personally, considering he's not even in the majors now. But at least we "thought" we had a CF. Colvin versus DeJesus? Tough call, but I guess I'd say we were better off last year. Rotation? Had Garza, Dempster, Z, and Wells. Personally, I think Shark, Garza, and Wood is comparable. Because none of us saw Dempster having the first half he did. He was a serviceable mid rotation guy, in mosts eyes. As far as Z? Tough call, but it certainly won't take much of an effort to head into next year with at least a better rotation than last year, even if it's short term fixes. At this exact point in the offseason, I think we are better off now than this time last year.

I think one of Dolis or Cabrera becomes a legit set up guy. 2013? No clue if it happens that quick or not. Neither will open the year in that role obviously. Assuming Marmol is here, I figure we'll also have Russell and Camp back. Camp seems to be a Sveum favorite. My guess is two of Dolis, Cabrera, Bowden, Beliveau, Chapman make the team and we add two vets who are relatively solid one year bets. The pen is a crap shoot unless you spend a fortune on it, so I fifure ours will be better next year, just because odds dictate it to be. But I figure we'll add a legit set up guy who's probably closed for someone in the past. It won't shock me if Tony Zych makes the team out of ST though, if he even gets an invite.
