    As far as JJ goes, he didn't get dealt at the deadline because of the asking price. If I remember, they wanted Olt, Perez, and more from Texas for him. Unless the price has come way down, my guess is he's a blip on our radar.

    Money isn't an issue for us. Especially now. After arb cases and renewals, we're going to be sitting in the low 60's payroll-wise. If we could absorb the entire Buehrle conteact, we wouldn't have to part with hardly anything of a return. Personally, I'd be OK with that. He's a decent enough pitcher and is likely to hold up for the duration of his deal. And if we wanted to flip him, he would have solid value if we were to eat some of the contract. ABTY says the Cards have looked into him though and if they got some salary relief, would part with a solid prospect for him. Yankees are supposedly interested as well.

    I don't think we'd need to trade Soriano to bring in Melky, we need a RF/CF. If we trade Soriano then we need LF + a RF/CF. Yeah, I should clarify what I said. The reason I even mentioned Soriano in this, is if he's dealt, we truly need a cleanup hitter. But I'd be in favor of Melky, if we keep Soriano too. Money's not an issue, we certainly shouldn't HAVE to move Soriano, in order to sign Cabrera.

    I'm perfectly fine with going after Melky, even at 12 mill for a year. Especially if we deal Soriano. That said, the makeup issues COULD keep the FO from even considering him. But for a rehab project that you're likely dealing at the deadline, I doubt there is a better option out there.

    Total unknown right now. Speculation has him starting in Daytona in 2013. He's got a hell of an arm though evidently. It won't surprise me if he's a top 50 prospect at this point next year.

    But NPB players acquired via the posting system don't normally count against the IFA cap? Would Otani have to be signed for a certain amount of days (or years) before he could negotiate a contract free of those restrictions? It would seem like the best approach to get the most money immediately out of an MLB team. It's because he's 18 and not 23. I wonder though, if incentives count inside the 2.9 figure? I figure they do, or else it'd be extremely easy to exploit.

    I asked Badler and he said if they DID do that, his contract still would have to fall under new IFA rules. That said, it wouldn't affect Nippon at all evidently. Unsure though if posting fee ALSO would count under 2.9 as well. Granted, no real reason for Otani to potentially lose money, because only Rangers have full IFA budget currently and if they lost the poting, Otani would be getting less money.

    KG had Gutierrez 17th in the Twins system heading into the year. We also outrighted Berken, Mateo, Socolovich, and Cardenas to Iowa today, opening up 4 spots on the 40 man.

    Law made it sound like they could post him immediately, to pocket the cash, in his chat today, unless I read it wrong. Some good Cubs stuff in there too that should get posted.

    AZPhil did a great recap on how the upcoming IFA bonus pools will work. I'm on my cell, but someone should eventually post it here. Each team will have 4 signing bonus values of equal amounts. (team amounts are different, based on worst record to best). But a team's total signing pool is divided into 4 equal parts. They can be traded, but only as an entire 1/4. So if we make a trade for more IFA money, we'll acquire a 1/4 of a teams entire budget. Again, you can only trade for up to half of your original budget. And evidently, you can't trade for more money than you have left to spend either. So I guess a late July deadline trade could be problematic, in acquiring more IFA money, if we've made early splashes.

    He could be. I can't see any FA other than him or Edwin Jackson as a possibility honestly. But I honestly wonder if they'll give up the 1.3 mill of their draft allotment yet.

    Interesting that Theo identifies 6 core members right now. And implies he'd like to see that number double within the year. Trying to figure out potential core members, I'm guessing Castillo, Barney, Brett, Garza, Vizcaino, and whoever the 2nd pick becomes, have the best chances of guys currently on the team or on the horizon. My guess though, if we have 12 at the end of next season, it'll include Castillo, Vizcaino, the 2nd pick, and 3 guys yet to be traded for, or signed.

    Vizcaino in the 2013 rotation at some point got mentioned. That one makes sense anyway. Personally, I don't see Russell as anything more than Raley or Rusin, if they gave him another shot. And giving Cabrera another shot at starting seems dumb to me. I think he's got a solid chance at being a set up type, but he's never had any sustained success as a SP and his stuff plays up better out of the pen.

    Considering the amount of firings we've had within the organization over the last year, he obviously impressed Theo in some way. That said, I'm with Gooney, in wanting to know what it is he actually does well. Out of curiosity, more than anything.

    To me, the reason the A's would do it(trade Reddick, not necessarily both) is they just got Young, could add a very solid starter at a position of need, in Barney, and add to their system as well, possibly selling high on Reddick. I guess he'd bring more of a return than Cespedes, but Cespedes' contract would probably make him the likelier of the two, to be dealt. But having Crisp, Cespedes, Reddick, Young, and Smith makes it very likely they move someone.

    I think it's way too much to give up for Reddick and I like him a bunch. I think a Barney, Vogelbach, Marmol, Jackson, Villanueva, and one of Alcantara, Amaya, or Candelario is enough to get Reddick AND Anderson. I mean, you'd be sending them a very cost controlled starting MI who's league average offensively and as good as anyone in the league defensively. Vogelbach is a future top 100 guy, likely within a year, with bigtime upside. Marmol has solid value, at a cost reduction, especially if he's a set up guy. Brett and Villanueva are both borderline top 100 guys that seem relatively safe to have ML careers. 100 at bats in the majors isn't going to kill Brett's value. The last group has excellent potential as well. It's like trading 3 B prospects, and a B- with upside(Sickels grading scale guesses) plus a starting SS and a very solid pen arm. Personally, I think thats enough to get those guys. Especially with the injury issues on Anderson, who I doubt has the same value currently, as Harden did, when we dealt for him. That being said, I seriously doubt Beane would package those two together.

    I saw a blurb that he takes a lot of pride out of playing SS, talking a ton and being the leader of the defense. But when moved to 3B, it's like he gets quiet, not knowing his role and he's confused by what he's allowed to say or do. Plausible? Personally, I doubt it, but who knows?

    Seriously, if anyone here can even IMAGINE themselves being able to sit thru 162 games of Hawk Harrelson, I'd question their status as a human being.

    I would take Hawk any day of the week over Len. You're kidding, right? I "think" I'd trade Len for Vin, but other than that(mostly nostalgic too, on that even) Len is the best guy out there, in my mind.

    Absolutely. He's one of my favorite prospect guys for sure. Personally, I find him funnier than KG too.

    Little disappointed to his response to my followup question. I asked is it fair to say it's a borderline top 10ish system and he said not that high for him, but showing improvement.

    I would, probably for either him or Cespedes. Whats an equivalent though? Jackson, Villanueva, Barney, and Candelario? Obviously, the Nats sent a pitching heavy package, but I'd think the value is close to the same.

    I would take either one, but I have to think Crisp is the goner of their OFers.

    That sucks. Young was a great value. Could have probably been had for Alcantara or Hernandez, straight up. Getting Pennington, it could take Arizona out of going after Barney too. I had my hopes up on getting Corbin from them. Coco Crisp becomes a CF candidate now for us, although with DeJesus, we need power somewhere.

    Not sure whether it's possible to find exacts on Cubs debt situation or not. But the Ricketts paid under 900 mill for the franchise and part of CSN(25%?). They put down close to 400 mill in cash. A couple years ago, they showed up on MLB's "naughty" list of being out of debt ratio. But all that meant was they owed more than 10 times their yearly operating income. Basically, any team that had been sold in the last decade was on that list and Selig immediately came out and said the Cubs were fine. At one point, the Ricketts family had 2 billion tied up in Ameritrade stock(after the purchase), no clue if thats still the case. At any rate, I'd think if they decided to sell the Cubs right now, they'd make a very nice profit. But it could be hard to gauge true value with the renovation supposedly about to happen, because no one knows if or how much help they'll be getting.
