  1. From a supply/demand standpoint, it's slim pickings. Most teams are in need and few guys that are FA are upper echelon types. We're not going after Greinke or Sanchez. Thats pretty obvious. Edwin? No clue. But after that, the grouo is Marcum, McCarthy, Dempster, Haren, Liriano, and Villanueva. Because we're not after Lohse or Kuroda, nor should we be. If we get two from that group somehow, it's a nice job.
  2. In Liriano's case, his walk rate had been acceptable or better until the past two seasons. I'd say it's much more likely he's fixable than a guy who's always had control issues.
  3. The risk is that we're using up one of our rotation spots on a guy who walked 5 per 9 last year. Thats kind of what we have Bosio for though, isn't it? To me, it'd be a fine move, provided we add some depth, to insure against injury risk.
  4. Sveum likes him a lot evidently. Either way, if you sign him, wait til the end of the offseason. The extra 40 man flexibility means more than he does right now.
  5. I think I'd be surprised if it goes much above $20 mil. Just not enough concrete info on this guy to determine where he'd fit in I don't think and even if you project him as a 3 at his ceiling, do you pay more than $20 to get him? Yeah, if he's a legit 3, I'd be fine if we went into the 30's honestly. He's 25, and you'd have to think his actual contract would be less than Darvish got. Which was 6/56. So, if you gave him a 6/40 contract, along with a 32 mill posting fee(for easy math) it turns into 12 mill a year for a legit 3, which I'd be perfectly fine with.
  6. Casey Coleman can handle it. Part of me thinks he actually DOES hold value to this group. Midseason rolls around, half the rotation gets dealt off, who's a better bet to move you up in the Fecal League than Coleman? I bet he gets moved off the 40 man soon though, we need to open up a few more spots. But he'll be at Iowa, waiting patiently to throw his straight mid 80s heat be everyone.
  7. If we wind up eith 2 of Liriano, Marcum, and McCarthy, which is starting to seem plausible, we definitely need to add a 3rd SP as well. Hell, maybe a 4th, due to injury concerns with those guys and Garza too.
  8. A very under the radar move we missed out on that I'm pissed about was not signing Mike Olmsted. If we're going to sign Gutierrez and Putnam, this was a guy(from the Red Sox, no less), that we SHOULD have gotten. 25 years old, spent some time in Japan, throws mid 90's. Put up 39.1 innings at high A ball last year, giving up 25 hits, with a 2.29 ERA. Oh, and 8 walks with 61 K's. He sucked at AA though. Pitched 20 innings, gave up 11 hits, had a [expletive] ZERO ERA, walked 7 and K'd 31. This was a dude that likely could have been in the back end of our pen and the Brewers stole him. The few things I read all said the Red Sox were stupid not to add him to their 40 man and its kind of hard to argue that baaed on the numbers.
  9. This is definitely an interesting test case though. I've heard nothing about his potential posting fee. Is he a 10 mill type or a 30 mill type? If its the former, Keith Law may be right in listing him at 37 on his FA list. If he goes for a bunch though, it'll show teams look at him as much more than a RP. If we miss out, I'm growing increasingly confident we'll wind up with 2 of McCarthy, Marcum, and Liriano. Although, we'd need to add another guy with at least a semi decent resume as well, to guard against injuries. My guess on Ryu is 28 mill posting fee to the Dodgers.
  10. Honestly, I'm not. The Dodgers may need a LOOGY.
  11. Talk about quick: Bids were due today at 5 EST. Guess we'll know something in a few days.
  12. I've got a feeling Paniagua starts in Daytona, sees plenty of time in Tennessee and becomes a mid 2014 arrival.
  13. All these guys, and their contacts as well, have had more looks at Underwood and Maples, even if its from HS, than they have Paniagua. Hell, some may not have ever seen him at this point. I'll take Law's first hand accounts and his general excitement on JCP and be happy. If I could bet on one SP from our system being a consensus top 100 type next year, thats here right now, I'm taking him easily.
  14. Hulet on Twitter about his Fangraphs list: Wrote this on org packed with intriguing prospects.
  15. More awesome stuff. Baez: Lunatic with a weapon.
  16. The trade comments from Theo are disappointing. I'm hopeful we find a way to bring in some young pitching somehow. Seems like Arizona wants major league talent back for Upton. With the volatility of pitching, I'm hesitant on a Bauer for Baez straight up swap. In the end, I'd do it, but I'd try making it a multiplayer deal first. Maybe Barney/Baez/Szczur for Bauer/Corbin?
  17. NYCF, thanks for posting that. I guess Parks loves upside obviously. Never would have thought Underwood or Maples would have made this list. I asked if top 5 syatem is realistic at this time next year and he said thats very optimistic, but possible. He actually likes the way next years draft is shaping up.
  18. Well, he's kind of right. He just doesn't understand why. We wouldn't move Baez in a deal for him. At least I'd hope we could get someone better than Hellickson, if we did. Almora and Soler are ineligible to be traded. So we'd be offering a quantity over quality package that other teams likely could beat. That said, Heyman's just regurgitating the same [expletive] thats been said about the system for the last 5 years or so.
  19. True, unless they actually let us know a number of what they saved each season for the future. Granted, even then, we'll never know if Ricketts is actually putting all profits back into the team or not. But hell, he SHOULD be allowed to make a nice profit each year, as far as I'm concerned. I think we worked it out previously that there appeared to be around 20 mill left over last year. Thats what I'd like to know will eventually get put back in at some point.
  20. I don't care about our payroll right now, but I am going to hold them accountable for saying any money saved will roll over and can be used in future seasons. I'd love for someone to ask that type of question in the Q and A at the Cubs Convention, to try and get a fairly legit answer to how much money was saved in year 1 that goes back into payroll for the future. Plus, how we'd account for a posting fee. For the people not on board, finding this info out, knowing it's more than just lip service could go a long way.
  21. Cubs, Dodgers, Rangers, Phillies, and Indians have all shown serious interest in Ryu, requesting documentation and things. Brett has an article up at BN, can't link from my cell. Damn, the Dodgers need to go away.
  22. No one is doing Oakland a "favor" by taking on Crisp's deal. If he were a FA, he'd get more than 7 mill per season and for multiple years. He's got value in a trade for them, even with the acquiring team pays his salary.
  23. In his last 331 games, he's been worth over 8 WAR. He's better than I thought anyway. I'd be OK with him personally.
  24. It completely depends on Haren's medicals. You have to think there's serious concern or he'd have been dealt. Even so, with as many teams as there are likely trying to contend, he could still see some 2-3 year offers, with the lack of pitching out there and his past success. Whether he wants that or a one year deal to try and up his stock again though, is anyones guess.
  25. A's keep Colon, 3 mill+incentives, for a year. Evidently won't affect them keeping McCarthy. That said, if they do keep him, they'll have a bunch of pitching to deal from.
