  1. No clue why I care about this, but Brett needs 23 at bats in his last 12 games, to lose rookie status. 3 lefties to go evidently.
  2. He's lost a lot of luster this year. A trade likely isn't an option, unless we want to sell really low. Of course, it's plausible he's worth even less later. That said, here's hoping his excellent makeup takes over and figures the K thing out enough to where he's a solid player, or gives us a valuable chip to use. In the end, I figure we'll give him a legit chance next year. CF is probably his to lose. I just hope he doesn't blow it.
  3. I'm OK if he stays or if we dealt him. If his bat comes around just a bit more though, it'd be ideal to keep him.
  4. Cool, glad you researched this and put actual numbers on each line. Not positive, but I "think" Hoyer is around 1.2 and thought I remembered rwadibg McLeod is in the 550k range. Hoyer seems clearer though. So, I look at this and wondwr two things: 1) does the leftover get rolled into future years where we can go over? And 2) does this money just go towards the renovation and it's gone from Theo's uses forever? I guess a remote possibility of the lack of money being spent is could this have been the Darvish posting fee and they were going to account for it all in one year?
  5. Actually, it's 12 left, so we'd need to go 5-7 or better. 3 at home with the Cards, 3 at Colorado and Arizona, and 3 home with the Astros to finish it off. Personally, I'd love to sweep the Cards, lose 6 straight, then annihilate the Astros. Avoid losing 100 and still get the 2nd pick somehow.
  6. Suburbs work?
  7. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/prospect-reports-boise-hawks/ Boise getting some attention from Fangraphs. Just one game's worth of scouting, but interesting.
  8. I wish. But there's just no way they'd be that gutsy and no one would take them seriously. Without knowing anything about the inner workings of the city, how close could they conceivably build a stadium and escape the tax? Huh? Are you asking a geography question? No, I'm asking is it possible to stay extremely close, but escape the tax? As in, if there's a place right outside the limits that could work and us escape the tax, yet keep the same fan base and all still able to see the games. I don't realy see how that wasn't understandable the first time.
  9. But the perpetual rebuilding machine you have us on doesn't ever have us contending. Sure thing man. I think this team can contend possibly in 2014 and definitely by 2015 with a few trades and signings over the course of the 2013 offseason, 2014 deadline, and 2014 offseason. At no point have I ever ventured further out than that and you know it.
  10. I wish. But there's just no way they'd be that gutsy and no one would take them seriously. Without knowing anything about the inner workings of the city, how close could they conceivably build a stadium and escape the tax?
  11. http://t.co/QgS8twxf If this happens, does it give the Cubs actual leverage to threaten a move?
  12. The Dominican facility is what? 12-15 mill and currently being worked on. That counts as something towards that. But I truly think that if the CBA hadn't changed, you would have saw us spend 20 mill on the draft alone and probably 10 on IFA as well.
  13. While very true, I'll play devil's advocate on that anyway. It could be they really want to win, but want to do it in the cheapest way humanly possible and think that assembling a FO that combined will make well less than 10 mill per season, can keep you in the 100-110 range-payroll wise, instead of the 140-150 area they inherited and it still saves you money and hopefully works out for the best. That said, I honestly don't think Theo takes the gig unless he was assured they'd have a top 3 type payroll in the NL when it's needed.
  14. I'm pretty sure there are quotes from Ricketts that say they don't need to make money with the Cubs from a long time ago. I'm also pretty sure there's quotes from our 145 mill payroll season that they still made money during that year. How things go forward, I guess we;ll see. In a perfect world, the money being saved currently is allowed back into the team in other years to offset things, if we ned to go over budget. In all likelihood, it was a rookie mistake on Ricketts part to ever say something like that, because I don't begrudge anyone from at least wanting to make a profit, especially on something as large of an investment as a sports team is.
  15. Kyle's right. But we can at least argue for now that it's been smarr instead of throwing money at a sinking ship. That changes if when we're contending we aren't going after guys that can conceivably put us over the hump.
  16. Houston is going to be different than us, in the fact we'll go out and attempt to get servicable players that we can try and trade. They appear content to trot out complete has beens and never will bes.
  17. I actually think that team comes in well under the 75 figure actually. I wish we had a better handle on how exactly arbitration truly works. But I'll be surprised if Valbuena hits a mill even, based on his MLB stats so far. Shark will be interesting, but the bottom line is he's had one good year starting and a good one in relief. My honest guess is he'll be between 4-5 mill, giving him a solid raise from the sub-3 mill he's making currently. Because this IS his 1st arb year. Garza wilk be interesting too, because of missing half a season and the uncertainty of how his elbow rwacts after throwing again. He'll get a raise, but I doubt he'll make more than 11-12 mill, because of the circumstance he's in. But yeah, that team challenges Houston for the Rodon sweepstakes and an injury probably makes us the odds on favorites.
  18. Just saw a quote from Sveum saying Valbuena will be tendered a contract in the offseason.
  19. I can't imagine them not bringing in a vet of some sort, but Levine acted(yeah, I know) that he would be the CF next year and Sappelt would be the 4th OFer. Personally, I expect a Ryan Sweeney type added, to where if Brett doesn't improve, we at least have some semblance of a legit major league caliber player out there the majority of the time.
  20. I'm not sure Clevenger beats out Recker for the backup job next year.
  21. He would have cost an arm and a leg then too. Which is why he wasn't dealt.
  22. Bowden's done well enough for himself too, that he'll definitely have a shot. Maybe even moreso, because of his prior ties to this group.
  23. I got a question in on both Callis and Law today. On my cell, so can't post chat answers, but I asked Callis if any of Brett, Vogelbach, Candelario, Szczur, Villanueve or Vitters had a shot at the top 100. According to him, Brett and Villanueva do and Vogelbach and Candelario will in the future. I asked Law about Boise's team and how excited should we be about Candelario, Vogelbach, Amaya, Marco, Almora, Paniagua, and Pierce Johnson. He said Vogelbach and Amaya aren't elite, Marco probably isn't, but he loves Almora and Paniagua and thinks Candelario is very interesting. Didn't mention Johnson.
  24. Thanks. I now have the mental image of Simpson on the mound, screaming THAT DAMN PENGUIN.......
  25. Our last 3 games are the Astros at home. We better have 2 clinched by then somehow.
