Brett has shown some very nice abilities since being called up. It's only right we try to be positive about him, because he MAY be a longterm piece here. But it's not anything close to being outright homerism either, because I see no one saying anything about Vitters, other than he definitely needs more time in AAA. Brett cutting his K's a tad is about all he needs to do. Sveum helped Rizzo quite a bit, it can happen here too. It's not a Festivus miracle if a guy like Brett becomes a longterm starter for us.
Didn't his higher K rate basically start around the time Rizzo got promoted? I always thought he began pressing personally and he just made things worse. I think he'll be OK and go into next year as our starting CFer.
This is your FA market for 3B this offseason: Scott Rolen, Mark Reynolds, Kevin Youkilis, Eric Chavez, Macier Izturis, and Placido Polanco. Pretty awe-inspiring. If we decide to go with Stewart, over THAT group, I'll understand.
Kyle, I was referring to Brett more than anything, as I just don't see how or why you're so adamantly apposed to him having a chance to be a solid player for us. as for Stewart, I think I'm going to side with Jumbo. Keep him. If he comes back to remote decency, he'd bring something in trade and make that trade look better. Rolen, Youkilis and Reynolds are the FA options. Keeping Stewart, Valbuena and having Vitters in AAA(unless he's dealt) would give us more money to spend elsewhere.
I wouldn't worry at all. Way too small and scattered of a sample size. How he performs in the AFL will tell us a bit more, but I fully expect him to get half a season in Tennessee next year, with an extremely slight chance of him even starting there.
I'm not watching and it was Joe Mather on first, so even though he stole second, I doubt there was a ton of throwing to first. That said, is there a stat that shows those kinds of things? Does it affect a pitch count in any way or should it? Tendencies towards players batting behind a bigtime base stealer getting more FB's, thus a higher BA for the season? Basically, I'm wondering if a Billy Hamilton does have extra value that's actually determinable or if it's just an unquantifiable, non-stat and truly has no effect on anything?
I asked Jesse Sanchez a couple days if we had signed anyone else and we gave 100k to a kid named Wagner Dislan and 80k to a kid named Luis Hernandez. Both are from the DR but I don't have what positions either plays.
Insinuating 600 PA for Brett qualifies as a waffle. Seriously though, Rizzo never K'd at an exorbitant rate until he got to the majors last year. But his K rate has dropped 40% from last season and is actually less than his AAA K rate as well. I understand completely K's will always be a large part of Brett's game, but I really don't think a drop of 25% off his current rate is that inconceivable to imagine. And Brett at a 30%ish K rate is a pretty solid MLB player. When Rizzo got called up, it seems like Brett's K's spiked. Too much pressure on himself? No clue, but I think that we can work with him and get them to a rate where it's acceptable, due to the rest of ehat he brings.
I think you're right on Valbuena, but I think Ian Stewart is more likely to have another crack at 3B than Rolen or someone similar. Wow, I honestly forgot he existed. You're right though, he'd make more sense than Rolen. He basically announced on Twitter a while back he'd take 1.5 mill to stay with the Cubs.
