  1. It's obvious Javy is being fast-tracked. They've got to be thinking he'll adjust quickly and show some discipline now that it'll be needed. At this point, I can see him making an impact in 2014. Previously, I doubted he'd get more than a possible cup of coffee that season. It's going to be interesting to see how SS plays out for the future between him and Starlin.
  2. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense for us to say anything to anyone that conceivably lowers the trade value of any of our prospects.
  3. The fact the Cubs left him unprotected weighs on my mind when ranking him. The fact he then went unpicked weighs even more.
  4. Well, he's denying and filing a countersuit. Saying its extortion.
  5. I think the Rangers can get by without adding anyone. They can play Olt in LF. They can move Kinsler out there and put Profar at 2B. I'll be a little surprised if they make a move for an OFer until these things have been proven ineffective.
  6. Honestly, my guess is they're really hoping a college SP is worth the pick, but I do expect BPA. At any rate, the separation from 1st to 2nd is a mill. Same with 2nd to 3rd. To me, it gives us(picking 2nd) plenty of leverage. If we let a guy drop to 3rd, he's going to lose money, if he gets full slot AND that teams entire overage budget as well, versus accepting slot from us.
  7. He mentioned Tampa later on, after being reminded.
  8. Toonster, I asked Sickels a week ago on Twitter, but got no response. Asked Callis a few days ago and pedigree + speed was his answer. Respect Callis a ton, but I think thats pretty flimsy. Although BA certainly likes keeping high profile picks as high as they can, for as long as they can, in their rankings.
  9. Torreyes went .264/.326/.385, with a .268 babip, 6.1% K rate, and 34 extra base hits in 474 plate appearances at 19 in a pitching friendly league. Spangenberg went .271/.324/.352, with a .327 babip, 16.4% K rate, and 21 extra base hits in 426 plate appearances at 21, in a hitter friendly league, thats also High A ball. Yet he's 7th in a Pads system that BA will have ranked higher than ours, and is devoid of elite talent.
  10. Heh heh. I like Torreyes too, but he should hit over .711-OPS before we can fuss much. One-toolers need to hit first before expecting much buzz. On Vitters, "Some scouts inside and outside organization feel comfortable projecting a .275/20 HR hitter. Brings little intensity to ballpark. Destroys left handers .331/.377/.625. Fielding is only adequate at best." 19 in High A all season with a .268 babip and 6% K rate.
  11. Next years draft IS supposed to be better. Way too early to tell though. As far as taking a hard to sign type? We pick 2nd. I can't imagine anyone actually passing up 6.2 mill(plus overage possibly) to make a million more possibly at a later time. Maybe a two-sport guy, who really, really, really loves football. At any rate, signability at 2 isn't an issue I see us having an issue with. Plus it sets you back a year. 3 may be a better talent next year, but not enough of a difference to just punt this year.
  12. Ray Lewis is in the news today for roids ironically. He's on tape for asking for IGF-1. Which is banned in the NFL. But its not tested for. Seriously. Plus, they had no testibg on HGH until the latest CBA. And THAT is still being held up with disagreements over how its implemented. So, there's no testing yet and won't be next season either.
  13. I think the A-Rod stuff is funny, but I find it hard to stomach the hypocricy of sports media at times. I can't believe there isn't more digging into the NFL, as far as this stuff goes.(if you're digging at all, might as well be fair) But since its on top and makes so much money, it's getting a pass basically. A few token mentions here and there, when in reality, it's probably got enough rampant use going on, it'd make Vince McMahon blush.
  14. Bradley Woodrum(fangraphs) and Colin Wyers(bp) are both Cub fans. Wouldn't shock me if one of them takes this position.
  15. Just move on to 30, McNutt at 29 is fine.
  16. I can't see why Torreyes isn't considered on the same level as a Cory Spangenberg.
  17. Nah, I think some team would have bit, if not for the draft pick situation. Now, it certainly appears less likely obviously. Boras needs the Dodgers to trade Ethier, in order for that to happen, in my mind. Personally, I want Boras to make a statement, using one or both of Bourn and Lohse as the guinea pigs. Hold out til after the draft, when compensation evaporates on those guys.
  18. Even if he's slightly worse than Dunn in LF(doubt a professional could be MUCH worse), he could still have solid value. The power may be comparable and the hit tool is likely better.
  19. When Derrick comes back, I think I'd rather see Nate stick as the backup PG. out of the rotation.
  20. I thought I was seeing tweets mentioning 10-20 mill a year?
  21. Loukas said the Cubs may not be here without Murphy's and Cubbybear.
  22. I'm not as well read on prospects as I should be, so I will often use Google...and I can't figure out who you're talking about. The dude we took in the Rule 5, so we don't have to keep him on the main roster all year.
  23. Dave Sappelt closed his Twitter account and made some tweets indicating changes were coming. He's not the guy I'd DFA, but I guess someone would probably trade a tiny something back.
  24. Well, there's likely another 40 man guy coming from our side, maybe 2, with Cleveland DFA'ing a guy or two, to give us the needed roster space. I'd really like to nab one of Mitch Brown or Kieran Lovegrove as PTBNL's, since we're within the 6 month window to do that now. And even though comp picks can't be dealt in the offseason, I wonder if they are allowed to be used as a PTBNL themselves? Cleveland has a 2nd rounder, which could be very useful, in this scenario. Especially if we followed up this move by signing Bourn and losing our 2nd rounder.
