  1. To me, this is the epitomy of poking holes in a signing. The dude is 26 and elite. Sure, hes a pitcher, but damn.......You can count on one hand the guys that are in his class. The odds of developing THAT type of guy is uber-slim. If you'd rather have a bunch of averagish types with no true monetary commitments, fine, but I'd rather take a shot on the truly elite and figure I'll still be OK with cheap, cost controlled guys, if things go bad. At some point, you pull the trigger. If not on Felix, then who?
  2. Of course you WANT to be efficient. But if you think letting a guy like Felix walk, you're naive that it wouldn't affect the bottom line. It's a business first and foremost. It's a nice bonus that he's 26 and one of the top 5 SP in baseball. Like I said earlier, if we find a way to trade for Price, we'll do the same thing. And half the board will erupt with inefficiency [expletive].
  3. As Gooney said, you don't get awards for being the most efficient team. Its easy on paper to play things out, trade him beforehand, or even let him walk. In the real world though, Seattle did what any other team that actually gives a [expletive] about their players, fans, and perception does in this case: You show him the money.
  4. If you go by the 5 mill needs to get you a WAR thing, Felix conceivably needs to be worth 35 WAR over the next 7 years to be "worth" that contract. Thats not why you do a deal like that though. In all likelihood, he's not going to be worth that much. You do it anyway though, because its very likely he'll put up several bigtime seasons, maybe getting you into the playoffs or better during some of them. Plus, the saved revenue keeping him gets you, instead of the backlash you face, if you deal him or let him walk. In OUR case, we should honestly be able to handle 40-50 mill of dead payroll per year and win with a 110-120 mill working payroll, if we have cheap, cost controlled production. I doubt the Mariners have the same luxury as we do, but its still a risk you gulp on, but take.
  5. Will we franchise Melton? He's my main concern defensively, hope we lock him in without having to do that, but I don't want to lose him.
  6. I just do not want Te'o to be our #1 pick this year. Just don't like it. Don't want the drama. Just pick someone else. Same here..
  7. If we somehow find a way to trade for David Price, we're going to do the same thing the Mariners just did.
  8. Possible that Law doesn't know Jhonny Peralta's name has already been mentioned?
  9. It seems like his athleticism is sometimes described on a curve. As in, for a guy who looks like he is the worst athlete in the minors, he's actually only really really bad. I've read his range at first described as "fall down," as in he can only reach balls that he could fall down to grab. The fall down comment is from Law. I think he needs repeat viewings of Vogelbach. His earliest reviews said he couldn't get the bat through the zone AND had no position. He's slowly coming around on him. I think quite a bit just has to do with position to begin with, 1B is getting dinged more and more, as it is.
  10. Product of already having him. Gotta relent and give him the money.
  11. Brett had Jason Parks as a guest on BN's podcast. Excellent stuff.
  12. If teams are hesitant(they are) to give up their first rounder for him, why would they do it for ONE year of him? If anything, the team that comes off their pick is going to WANT to have him locked up for a period of time.
  13. I forgot Frankie Pikiere, I'd put him 3rd, behind Parks and Law.
  14. While the rankings are certainly arbitrary, I like Parks, then Law. After those 2, I'll say Callis. Hulet next and Sickels and Mayo are at the bottom for me. If we're talking solely about info given by the minor league guys, I'd put Newman and Badler above Callis as well. Parks chatted for six and a half hours yesterday, by the way.
  15. Martin, Scott, and Arias.
  16. By most lists, Baez, Bogaerts, and Liriano all are in the 10-20 range. The thing I like about Law's list each year, is he goes out on more limbs than most. They're all fun, but when you get a top 10 type in Bauer getting dealt for a non top 100 type in Gregorius, it shows these lists(which I love) are pretty much useless.
  17. Keith Law has us FIFTH in his minor league org rankings!
  18. Going thru 50, heres some guys that should probably be under consideration at some point during that time: Brooks Raley, John Andreoli, Chris Rusin, Kyle Hensricks, Zeke DeVoss, Dustin Geiger, Timothy Saunders, Josh Conway, Yao Lin Wang, Jeffry Baez, Trevor Gretzky, and Dallas Beeler. I'm unsure what to do with the DSL guys. Personally, I'd probably take a flyer and put Rodriguez at the back of my list, but we don't have enough info on these guys honestly. As bad as Acosta was last year, I've read somewhere he'll be in Arizona this spring. Stats are just hard to go by down there. So I guess either put them all up for consideration or none of them. Did Badler talk about any of them in his DSL/IFA stuff post-season?
  19. Welcome to the board, Brickhouse! Using "legit" was probably the wrong use of words honestly. But, as you said, we could get to 50 guys that have some level of intrigue at least.
  20. Personally, I think we could go to 50 with legit prospects. But the differential between them is very small at this stage, so the voting will be very close and people may lose interest.
  21. If its been mentioned, I've glossed over it, but Bruce made it sound as if Soler will start out in Daytona, not Kane County.
  22. The scouting reports are less than flattering. If the age issue is real, he could get suspended from signing for a year. With the 2nd highest IFA budget this year, I want it spent on high impact types. Which Diaz doesn't appear to be. If he's 23 or older and doesn't count against our IFA budget? Sure. If he's younger and would count against it? Nope.
  23. Seeing as how all those quotes came from my Twitter, you should follow me there, @BruceMiles2112. They're all there. :) Hehe, I do Bruce. Can't link from my cell though. [expletive], should have mentioned they came from your feed though, my bad.......Did McLeod appear to think Vogelbach MAY eventually switch positions?
  24. McLeod with some really good quotes tonight(on my cell) that someone should post. Said Baez is further along as a SS than Castro at the same age. Almora and Vogelbach are both guys that are team captain types. Vogelbach is more athletic than most see, but the plan is to keep him at 1B for as long as possible.
  25. Unless they see Smith as the 2nd best player, I don't see them taking him. Or anyone else, to save money for later picks. I've entertained the idea previously, but with the high value of early slot picks, the Cubs have all the leverage to get their guy to sign AT slot at 2. That leaves them close to 500k in overslot money for later, not counting taking very cheap guys in rounds 8-10, that could give them an extra 400k as well. It's definitely conceivable the Cubs can pay slot at 2 and give out a 2 mill bonus with their 2nd round pick and even get a million dollar bonus guy in the 3rd, with just underslotting 8-10 and a slight 100k underslot at one other spot.
