  1. Great that Jimenez is official. Is Tseng official? Muskat tweeted it, but linked an MLB article. Not remembering an official Cubs tweet anyway.....In the hopes we go further than we already have-a few names to keep an eye on are Luis Encarnacion, Rafael Devers, Angelo Serrano, and Cecilio Aybar. Encarnacion seems like a Phils lock on August 9th(birthday), Devers has me wondering now though. He's been 16, is the 3rd ranked IFA and supposedly has had an agreement with the Red Sox since we knew anything at all about any of these guys. But he's still not official for some reason. Serrano signed for 750,000 with the Cards last year, but lied about his age. He's older(Cards thought he was 17 at the time) so he's like Mejia. Aybar is 19 and fast as hell. Was going to be a top 3 player in the class, but is 19 and suspended til mid-April from signing.
  2. I thought 5 was first division regular? Occasional All Star type?
  3. Miles, then Mooney, for the best. No one else worth mentioning. I think I'd say Rogers is the worst, followed by Sullivan, then Muskat. Wittenmyer has had insight into the renovations at least. He's the best of the worst, in my mind.
  4. Sure, its out there to put a bit of pressure on him. Even still, if he won't sign, I'd say its likely we go into 2014 with him in the rotation, unless someone overpays.
  5. Pardon my ignorance but what's Role 5? A very solid player. Good enough to start on a contending team with a few All Star caliber seasons.
  6. And now, the tarp is back on. [expletive] Daytona.
  7. Pretty sure its because he threw less than 60 innings last year and has already doubled it this one.
  8. Why is it that you see them willing to trade for an impact player (and thus give up, presumably, significant minor league asset(s)) but you can't see them signing a free agent that they'd have to give up the #11 (or lower) pick in the draft for or something? Salary-related. The traded for guy presumably would be making less money than the FA, plus they'd be younger as well.
  9. I don't see the payroll at 75, but I don't see a splurge either. I'm hoping for an impact trade for a middle of the order bat or a TOR pitcher. Could easily be that neither happens though. If thats the case, I expect a decent OFer to be added, an innings eater on a short term contract OR a potentially better arm thru IFA, and a few bullpen arms. I'll be surprised though, if we don't enter the year expecting a .500 team.
  10. Say what you want about Parks or Law, but I love the info they give out. OTOH, Sickels does nothing outside of K rates and age versus level stuff that many here can do. Reading his midseason update on our system gave literally no insight whatsoever that isn't talked about on here daily.
  11. We have one for now. Hopefully he's willing to give us a longterm deal in the offseason. That said, even if he does, I want a second one.
  12. What in the world does that even mean? They will never be done building the farm up, it is a continuous process. What I mean by that is the only FA that'll be tied to compensation(off the top of my head) are going to be Cano(who I can't see coming here), Ellsbury, and Choo. Ellsbury and Choo are certainly good-but I don't see this FO signing either if we have an unprotected 1st rounder. I think the FO will try and their TOR SP with that pick, in all likelihood, with the draft being very deep in pitching. OTOH, I'm not saying we won't try and trade for a big ticket player. I just don't see us punting the 1st rounder, if its unprotected, which is a fairly solid possibility, at this point.
  13. How does adding good players preclude them from "building the farm up?" I'm pretty sure the last two posts referencing Cano indicate a feeling that there is little to no chance of it happening. And I'm pretty sure it would have nothing to do with Jay Z not wanting him in Chicago. I'm being realistic. Do you REALLY think this FO is going to spend big on ANY FA this year? Especially if it costs them their 1st? I don't. I'm not even saying I agree or disagree. I just don't see it happening. Is Sullivan trolling? Sure. But there's a lot of truth in it as well.
  14. They aren't through building the farm up(like it or not). I'm surprised to see Cano even getting mentions honestly. One, he's older but will get 200 mill or so. And two, do you really think Jay-Z is going to put him in Chicago? He's staying put or heading to LA.
  15. The FA class is pitiful. We may not even have a protected 1st rounder and its a strong draft. With who we kept yesterday, its easy to see us under 100 mill heading into 2014.
  16. Yeah, I think thats possible as well. In fact, as much as I was initially disappointed at our lack of activity today, keeping solid players on short term deals until some of these guys are ready really DOES make perfect sense once you look at the anemic FA class.
  17. Is this based on the Heyman story? Yeah, should have mentioned it was Heyman. Rosenthal mentions teams on both Schierholtz and DeJesus, with one likely to go.
  18. Cubs did not receive enough to trade Shark. Will explore extension over offseason, if Shark still refuses, a trade becomes more likely in the offseason.
  19. He's a pitcher. They ALL have downside. Including Shark on a longterm deal. Not to mention, no one's condoning a one for one swap.
  20. Archie Bradley has at a 10% shot, maybe 25% even, of posting a 2014 WAR as good as Shark. He'll be 21 in about a week. Having him for 6 years, 3 at league minimum, versus Shark at two relatively high priced arb years, followed by FA, makes some sense. You guys can equate it to prospect lists all you want, but Bradley will spend quite a bit of time in the majors next year himself, with an upside much higher than what Shark has done to date.
  21. I don't think I'd trade Olt/Edwards/PTBNL for Garcia AND Iglesias. Much less the actual White Sox return on Peavy, with an extra year of control.
  22. I'd want Bradley and Skaggs. I guess I'd trade Shark for Bradley/Kennedy/Holmberg.
  23. The Cubs sure seem to keep putting off making the Jimenez signing official. Yeah, I'm not even sure I understand this. Is IPL announcing he's signing with the Cubs? Or is it for Round Production, whatever that is?
  24. I think the main point here is if you were offered two of the top 10 prospects in baaeball for Shark, you do it. Not that it'd happen.
  25. Rosario's FB was hitting mid 90's last year and had garnered a bit of attention from KG as a guy to watch, before he got hurt.
