  1. Yeah, looking at the next two FA classes shows we really need to make trades or develop our own guys. In 2014, my guesses at the players who receive qualifying offers are McCann, Cano, Utley, Ellsbury, Choo, Beltran, and Pence for position players and Kuroda, Ervin Santana, Lincecum, and maybe Josh Johnson and Ubaldo Jimenez for pitchers. Very few of those are worth giving up a pick for, especially since quite a few of those guys make you feel uncomfortable giving a multi year deal too.
  2. Seeing that makes me hopeful we'll be serious players on Masahiro Tanaka. He'll command a Darvish-type posting fee, but even if he were to be signed, the payroll would be 80ish, just with a 50 mill one time addition.
  3. Javy 3-3 now. And yes, I think Arrieta can be a very solid set up type. Want to see him starting in the majors this year though and at least thru spring training next year. Honestly, I'm much more likely to conceed Vizcaino as a pen guy than Arrieta.
  4. Bryant extends hit streak to 10, with a 2 run single. Arrieta thru 4, given up 1 hit and has K'd 10.
  5. Any interest in Tony Sipp, who was DFA'd today by Arizona? He'd likely have to be dealt for, but I doubt it'd take much obviously. Relatively decent lefty with 2 years of control left and is making around 1.2 this year.....
  6. It would be huge for us if just one of those two become remotely close to what their upside is supposed to be.
  7. I feel like trolling out a discussion, so what the hell.....With where the team currently stands, both in the majors AND minors(Almora, Soler, and Bryant as OF prospects), if we have the 11th pick, do you give Ellsbury a 6/100 deal, if thats what it takes. And its the only move of any consequence payroll allows for this offseason. Or do you fill the OF spot currently open(assuming DeJesus and Schierholtz are here) with a David Murphy type to platoon with Lake?
  8. Silver lining being Gretzky lost a flyball in the sun for a double and a Penalver error after that.
  9. Is our contract up after 2014 or is it later than that?
  10. 5 2 0 0 1 1 line for Maples, who I saw on Twitter hit 96 early on. 2 1 0 0 1 2 line for Hoffner.
  11. Daytona, yeah, you know......
  12. I understand and agree with all that. However, if you're not making the playoffs, you want to keep your pick. Granted, there aren't many FA available worth giving up the pick for, but IF the Cubs decide to go get one, wouldn't you rather have finished 73-89 with the 10th, than 76-86 with the 14th?
  13. From a player talent standpoint there MAY not be that much of a difference. However, the real difference is in still HAVING your 1st round pick, if Ricketts is able to spend finally.
  14. Yeah, I can see him having upside, but come on. Pierce, CJ, Paniagua, Underwood, Blackburn, Cabrera, Zastryzny, Skulina, and Vizcaino ALL have higher upsides in my mind.
  15. Edwards/Johnson/Wells/Pineyro/Black is the best 5 man rotation I can remember at an affiliate.
  16. Gotta admit, I've been a big supporter of this the last 2 years, but we're not nearly bad enough to where we can get Rodon or Hoffman, so it doesn't matter to me this year. I'm hoping for 72-75 wins and a top 10 pick, so if we splurge in FA, we'll still get a damn good player in the draft. Obviously its early, but I think this draft is shaping up much like the one in 2011. So, as long as we're protected, we'll get a bigtime guy.
  17. Yeah, he's potentially an important piece for next year. He was really good in the KBO, he signed a very incentive-laden deal with us, that could make him up to 5 mill or so. I think I read he's hit 95 recently.
  18. I wonder who the 40-man spot is for. Lim? Good question. Thats my guess as well. Need to get as long a look at him as possible.
  19. I kind of expect one Camp/Gregg type to make the team and one solid addition as well. Agree with the point though-its much easier to see the pen as something other than a total mess.
  20. Hoffner got $100,000 as a 14th rounder last year and the stuff meets the results. He's definitely one to watch for but he's strictly a reliever. He's topped out at 95 this season. He's h as d some injuries in the past, but he's got 3 pitches. Is it a delivery thing as to why he's a reliever?
  21. Born 07/30/1993(5 months older than Blackburn). 6'5, 235. Throws 91-93, with projection for more. 29.2 IP 17H 5R 4ER 6W 27K 1.14GO/AO .163BAA 1.21 ERA at Boise. Why in the [expletive] are we not talking about Corbin Hoffner?
  22. Jimenez and Torres were basically 1 and 2 on everyone's lists and Cubs got both of them. Also got 3 very solid pitchers. Tseng was ranked in the 20s by most, but if not for being overworked and a subsequent loss of velo-he could have been the top pitcher available. Mejia is 6'7 and very projectable-wasn't ranked by most due to being ranked last year and having age issues. Would have been a definite top 20 guy. Moreno is ranked inside the top 20 as well by most.(another pitcher). Also signed a C for a 270k bonus that likely will fall around a top 60ish bonus given out. Not much CURRENTLY left out there thats unaccounted for. But guys WILL pop up as solid players between now and the end of the signing period, that hopefully we go after.
  23. I asked Badler about Devers and Encarnacion, he doesn't see us in on them. Our best bet becomes pop up guys later in the year and early next year. The teams that spend their IFA money are most likely close to their cap and likely won't want to go over by just a bit. Putting us and Texas at odds over any of these types.
  24. Jimenez is a bit raw himself, I think Torres moves quicker than he will. In either case though, assuming both are in the DSL next year, I'd say 2018 at the earliest.
  25. Pretty sure that's 6. Your breakdown looks right the more I look at it.
