Davis has been on MLB rosters for 12 seasons was he a better pitcher in '07 or '09 than he was this past season? what made him effective in those seasons and a pitching machine this year? I don't know, old age? Injuries? Davis was horrendous over 17 starts in the past 2 years? Why should I care what he did 5 seasons ago? the point is he wasn't a better pitcher, he just had better defense, basically; which is why we care about fielding independent pitching stats and focusing more on peripherals -

Fangraphs had him listed at being worth about $2.1 million last season. If "substantial raise" means at least $3 million a year, or even $3.5, they're overpaying, but if he's holding out for an extra $500K-$1MM there probably isn't any harm in paying him that with all the money we're not spending on FA's, but he's honestly not worth that much money from a baseball standpoint. It'd be for the whole Golden Calf effect. I'm A-OK with that, but if they don't sign him it's not exactly a dumb baseball move. SCARY FACT: I know one was a starter and the other was a reliever, but Doug Davis was considered more valuable than Kerry Wood last year, and in fewer innings pitched (0.7 to 0.5). to be clear, with his leverage index, Wood's monetary value was much more in the neighborhood of $3M last year; dictating a reliever's value by WAR fails to account for the added importance of their innings pitched also, your scary fact doesn't hold true after accounting for Davis' hitting

I'm not sure why anyone would want a 28 year old rookie 1B with a half year of proven ability at the MLB level. the average DH had a .769 OPS, the average 1B had a .791 OPS, and the average LF had a .727 OPS last year impartial projection systems have him down for between .775 and .800 OPS; he could conceivably be an offensive upgrade for teams severely lacking at any of these positions (specifically Tampa, Milwaukee, Cincinnati, Texas), looking to upgrade with relatively little acquisition cost
