  1. Sounds like the right plan... remember how awesome the Cubs were when we had Corey Patterson, Hee Siop Choi and David Kelton? Those guys turned out to be studs just like they were projected to be by the gurus!
  2. Again, if we're not going to go for it in the next 2 years, we need to trade off everyone on the whole dang team. Sitting around and waiting for farm kids to develop is a waste of Lee, Aram, Big Z, etc in their peak years.
  3. I really like that series of moves, just because it'll be a lot easier to get a OF bat at the trade deadline as opposed to a starter. And you can bump Lugo to SS if Pie goes nuts, or after the trade for an OF. You'll also know if Soriano can handle CF or not. Plus you keep the kids around for trade bait.
  4. Just get someone who kills lefties to platoon with Jones. I don't see why you'd have to make a trade, as lefty-killer + Jacque = very good, cheap production.
  5. There's two reasonable choices for the next two years, because after that, Prior, Z, Barrett, etc won't be under market value after that window closes. 1) Go for it in the next two years and spend a ton of money 2) Trade off the whole dang team and rebuild If you want to completely squander Zambrano, Prior, Lee, Aram, Barrett, and Wood, and start over with counting on Rich Hill and Felix Pie to be all-stars, be my guest. But this seems to be a more sensible option, especially considering the organization that's in place right now.
  6. That's if Drew actually stays healthy... Yep, and we all know with the Cubs he'd be on the DL for half his contract.
  7. Fax the entire "Moneyball" book to his office over and over again.
  8. You said it man! http://booreview.com/images/the_big_lebowski_jesus.jpg
  9. We all know his shoulder is going to magically heal and he'll find his control and start winning 20 games a year if he goes to another team.
  10. Kuroda sounds like he'd be a great innings-eater, he's led the Japanese league in complete games 5 out of the last 6 years. He's having an amazing year this year, but his ERA in the previous years leaves something to be desired. Sounds like he does have the stuff to pitch over here (fastball tops out at 96 mph), and he's been third in Ks in Japan the last 2 years. And he'd come pretty cheap unless some other teams run up the bidding on him.
  11. I think we'll be fine, assuming we get a big bat/ace pitcher, plus another good bat and a innings-eater. Just getting rid of Dusty's mismanagement of the lineup + healthy Lee easily should make us a .500 team alone.
  12. Yes, but having Murton in LF, clogging up the easiest place to get cheap FA offense + power isn't a great thing.
  13. More likely, the decision wasn't made yet to bump the payroll up 15-20% When you do that, Soriano makes a lot more sense. And you can move him to LF or 2B when Pie is ready.
  14. Yeah, we desperately need someone who can go out there and eat up a lot of innings (Kinda like how Lieber was for us), in addition to another "ace".
  15. Yeah, it's like a good ole boys network. They could probably find a better manager than anyone in MLB if they looked outside it.
  16. You guys are seriously underestimating the value of a guy who can push the right buttons for a team. There's more to managing than just filling up a lineup card or making a pitching change at the right time.
  17. Tigers WIN... crowd is loving it! Not quite Wrigley levels but pretty close.
  18. Manager: Augie Garrido Pitching Coach: Jennie Finch Hitting Coach: Sadaharu Oh Bench Coach/Color Commentator: Steve Stone (live miced on the bench during the game) 1st Base Coach: Ronnie Woo-Woo 3rd Base Coach/Player: Cesar Izturis (replaced by 7th inning stretch guest singer or Pat Hughes/Ron Santo if Izturis starts or enters the game).
  19. We could definitely do a lot worse. I think Brenly would at least get the guys playing fundamental baseball and he seems to at least recognize that you ought to play high OBP guys in the first couple spots in the lineup, walks are better than outs when batting, and that just because a guy is a lefty pitcher, it doesn't mean he's automatically good at getting lefties out.
  20. Fro

The big problem is Jones was in an outfield with Pierre and Murton, who both have way below average power for their position. Pierre was flat-out pitiful in the first half of the season, and Cedeno was pitiful as well after April. With all the injuries, we needed way more out of Jones.
  21. Money for player/scouting development is just as important as bumping payroll. IMHO, I'd rather see the first $5-10 million going there instead of directly to payroll. Imagine us going to every scout and coach in the A's and Braves organization and offering them a huge raise to come to the Cubs!
  22. Any buyouts for MacPhail and Hendry would be chump change for a guy like Cuban or any other new owner. I suspect that'd have little bearing on whether you buy the team or not.
  23. He's still on HGH and probably insulin and a lot of the other drugs he was taking. The guy was a great player but he's a huge cheater (and still is).
  24. Ah come on, the Tribune has a history of being accurate http://campus.queens.edu/depts/history/images/DeweyDefeatsTruman_3.jpg
  25. Sportscenter just said "Carlos Lee" is up to the plate for the Cubs.
