  1. Good news is Lester and Hanley Ramirez don't get along http://content.usatoday.com/communities/dailypitch/post/2010/07/jon-lester-either-hates-pizza-or-dislikes-hanley-ramirez/1#.VHMvuxA4uRU
  2. Pretty average on balance.
  3. I'm not sold on Montero... think we can get someone cheaper who knows the pitch framing voodoo magic
  4. This article from the Tribune from 2012 says Soler can't become a free agent until after 2020, even if he opts for arbitration instead of his salary for that year of the contract.
  5. Here's the Baseball Prospectus numbers Castillo does a little better but he was still -10.0 runs and Martin was +19.3 runs in 2014 Working theory is 10 runs ~= 1 win, for reference.
  6. In an extreme example, maybe there's around a 50 run net swing in going from -24 (Castillo) to +24 (Montero) 50 runs over 1150 innings of catching... maybe 200 go to each starter? So you're saving about 8.7 runs over 200 IP (some of those will be unearned). Maybe 0.2 or 0.3 points of ERA at most. I think at least part of that is umpire bias, so a "good" pitcher on a "good" team is going to get more borderline calls, regardless of how the catcher frames it (although I think that's a factor).
  7. Yeah, you can't wait and see who's there next year. You know who's available now, have money and a pretty good shot to get at least Lester for no lost draft pick. Even if you don't have enough to compete this year you get as many pieces in place as you can for and BEFORE 2016. Agreed: 1) We have a lot of $$$ to spend that's going to go to waste otherwise 2) We have a protected 1st round draft pick 3) We can compete for the playoffs with a few of the right FA signings, and then it just depends on what team is hot at the right time. Assuming the bidding doesn't go completely crazy it makes sense to spend now. We should have enough revenue coming online over the next few years to be able to continue to make upgrades to the team and basically do whatever needs to be done. You're wasting cheap years of Rizzo/Castro/Bryant/Soler, etc if you don't spend now.
  8. Martin's also great at pitch-framing and Castillo is flat-out awful.
  9. Maddon may be the chosen one to bridge the smart fan/meatball divide, judging from twitter.
  10. Maddon should be worth some number of wins over Ricky Renteria and that's probably an undervalued commodity in the market at this point. If he's worth 1 win a year it's worth doing. Plus there's some value to having a marketable manager in terms of the $$$ the team can get back.
  11. Crane Kenney will mess up and hire John Madden as manager and he'll miss 1/2 the games since he has to ride in a bus from town to town.
  12. Here's the NL teams that haven't hosted since the Cubs last did: Washington (new park, definitely will get a game) Miami (new park, franchise never has had an All-Star game but LOL fanbase) Dodgers (way back in 1980) The Phillies and Padres have newish ballparks where they haven't hosted an All-Star game, but they've hosted since Wrigley has at their old parks. The Braves will have their brand-new park in 2017 but they hosted in 2000. So I think the Cubs are due in 2019, 2021, or 2023 (at the latest).
  13. You're probably not going to have a protected pick again after this year, so that should factor into the equation. You're either going to have to pay in $$$ or prospects to upgrade the rotation at some point.
  14. Will be interesting to see what Kasper says about the TV situation in the next few minutes. I guess there's still a few Bulls game left on WGN America, but feels like the end of an era for da Superstation WGN.
  15. I've been planning on going to the game Wednesday in Cincy for a couple months... picked the latest Cubs/Reds series hoping our prospects would be playing by then \:D/
  16. We should just setup our baseball academy on Sosa's yacht in international waters.
  17. The Giants should have got out and helped the grounds crew if they were so concerned about losing.
  18. Personally I'd rather get a FA corner OF or trade for one as opposed to rolling the dice on another Cuban OF. Ideally that's the spot where you'd get some veteran leadership.
  19. Personally I'd wait another year but I don't have the info that Theo/Jed have. I'd like to have him pitching for us in 2018-2020, but it all depends on what the cost is. We could save some money potentially by signing an extension now but that depends on Arrieta staying healthy and continuing to pitch well.
  20. Baez now has more career MLB home runs than Ben Revere
  21. I just hope we call up Soler & Bryant before September 1st since we're pretty much a lock for the playoffs now.
  22. This home plate ump needs to be one of the first to get replaced by a robot ump. Strike zone is all over the place. Didn't he have 10 minutes to doctor the ball up when he took forever to "warm up"?
  23. Anderson fakes back injury to avoid facing Baez again
  24. Isn't Turner a legit #2/#3 if we get him fixed? He's got better stuff than a back of the rotation starter.
  25. Hopefully the Rockies don't make a waiver claim.
