  1. Soriano doesn't "catch the ball" any better than Walker. But the scout in Hendry has to love Soriano, and maybe Hendry evisions a middle IF of Furcal and Soriano, with Neifi and Cedeno backing them up.
  2. Bruce, If Walker is being shopped hard, is it to Texas for Soriano? If not, then for who?
  3. I don't think other teams are allowed to negotiate with Neifi. Not until Friday they weren't.
  4. Thanks but now I'm confused. Hendry said that Perez and Cedeno would battle for 2nd base. Why is there no mention of Walker Bruce? I think you can guess the answer to that. They have every intention of trading Walker. Are there any takers? And for what?
  5. Yeah. I could just see some of the questions now: How the hell did you give Neifi a 2-year contract worth $5 mill dollars? ARe you on crack or something? I would just ask him to justify thinking that Brian Giles will be overpriced, when he's overpaid 2 players that are completely redundant by a factor of 5. Giles won't be signing a 2 yr. contract like Neifi and Rusch. This franchise is terrified of long contracts. Making decisions like that, though, is one of the reasons we never win.
  6. There's just no way it happens. I just cannot see it happening. I'll be real surprised if it happens. Just doesn't seem like a good match. Philly wants a 3b and the Cubs have no one besides ARam to offer. However, I think Abreu's more likely than Giles. Yeah but Hendry might not think ARam can catch the ball. Please don't say that. It's just not funny, because I can't dismiss it as out of the question.

  8. Thanks, Bruce. We all really appreciate any info you can funnel our way. And BTW, if you convince Hendry to change his mind about Giles, I'll buy you a year's worth of Omaha Steaks. :D
  9. Has anyone actually even heard a rumor that the Cubs are planning on trading Cedeno and letting Neifi be the full time SS or 2B? Because everything I've seen says that Cedeno will be the starting 2B. I fully expect Neifi to see quite a few starts subbing for Cedeno, but you can't say for sure that Neifi will be the starting 2B or SS if you have no evidence. There's no chance that they paid $2.5m for Neifi to be a backup. If they did, it's almost dumber than paying his $2.5m to start. There's no way any competition for 2B in ST will be legit if it's Cedeno vs Perez. Hendry saying that Cedeno can be a starter is designed to give leverage in bidding for Furcal plus pump Ronny's trade value. That's it. I heard the same comments regarding Dubois last winter. Amazingly, Hollandsworth played everyday.

  11. For the last time, it's not just about Neifi. It's about Neifi at the cost they paid, at the expense of a cheaper alternative, at the possible cost of being able to sign Giles because they think HE will be overpaid. It's about paying Neifi and Rusch $6m for next season, when neither of them are worth close to it. It's indicative of a lack of coherent direction, because we now have Cedeno, Walker Hairston and now Perez for basically the same role. No we don't. The Cubs will probably be unloading the best two of those (Cedeno and Walker) before the season starts. I hate this team sometimes. You're right, which means were getting rid of the two best options for this role just to have Neifi on the team.

  13. I think now would be the perfect time for a Hendry Q&A.
  14. Maybe it's Bruce trying to get Hendry to do something smart. I wish we were all a little more connected to the decision makers. Maybe we could pull a Karl Rove and start influencing the decisions.
  15. Yeah, but how many years will it take to undo the damage that Baker and Hendry could do?
  16. Sometimes??? Maybe with most managers... He was talking about Caesar Cedeno Banedon. Are you sure it wasn't Andujar?
  17. Check the current poll on cubs.com. Giles is 4th place in "most wanted FA" with 8% of the vote after Damon with 47%. That right there shows you the aptitude of your average fan. Let's hope that if the team wants to solicit advice from the internet, they look here rather than there.
  18. Hendry's plan seems to be predicated on health of our pitching, versatility of reserves and chemistry of veteran everyday players. Unfortunatly, that sort of plan never will work. I'd rather have bench players good at one thing than ones that stink at nearly everything. I'd rather not have to count on injuries not hitting us, and guys having career years.
  19. I hate being right. It's laughable that Hendry thinks Giles is overpriced, yet has no promblem overpaying mediocrity. He's pound wise, penny foolish.
  20. I'd kill for Castillo if it blocked Neifi from regular playing time. The scary thing is this may be the proverbial robbing Peter to pay Paul. If Castillo comes to the Cubs I think that means they couldn't sign Furcal and guess who slides over to the SS spot? Maybe Walker goes to Flordia, thus eating a little bit of Castillo's salary. The Hendry will have his 2 speedsters in the 1-2 spots. The part I don't understand is this. Hendry knows Perez wants to be a starter and it's in Hendry's character to be straight up about things like this. This is why I think Perez will be starting at 2B or SS for the Cubs or another team if he is eligable to be traded. Then I guess we're stuck with him. Great.
  21. SCFan asked earlier if Perez can even be dealt unitl June 15th....does anyone know if he can be? Yeah, that's what I want to know, too. He filed for FA, didn't he? I think that means we're stuck with him until June. Besides, why would we sign him to trade him, and who in their right mind would take Perez at $2.5m?

  24. Unfortunately in the eyes of the organization Neifi is not a defensive replacement, he is an everyday top-of-the-order player. Except that Hendry stated in his own words to the contrary. I don't think this move is exactly exciting or promising for the team. 2.5 million for a back-up is not smart economics at all, especially considering the prime off-season target (Furcal) isn't a SS that needs a back-up late-innings. It makes me think Neifi is there to be a back-up 2B, and his worth is only about 800k in that role. But people are so far beyond crazy with pages and pages of over-reaction with this that it is clear that the Neifi-factor is carrying far more weight in relevence than it actually deserves. So Hendry has a history of over-paying for bench players. It's not that big of a deal. It's a big deal when it starts adding up. We now have $5.5m of pretty much wasted money this offseason. That money could make or break a much more important signing (Giles, or now Furcal who seems ultra critical).
