  1. Tim and Jeff, Thank you for making such a wonderful movie and for taking the time to answer questions. I was wondering if you have an idea of how well the film was received outside of "Cubdom". It seems to me that this is a story that just about anyone could embrace, and I hope it was not lost outside of the upper-Midwest.
  2. I've heard that as well. Payton wants to go somewhere he'll get regular playing time. That's why he had problems in Boston. He wasn't seeing the light of day trying to get time in an outfield that already included Manny Ramirez, Johnny Damon, and Trot Nixon. That's why moving him to Oakland doesn't make a whole lot of sense unless Oakland is planning on moving one of theirs. It's no ManRam, Damon, and Nixon OF, but they have Kotsay, Kielty, Byrnes, and Swisher already. Payton is not a significant upgrade over any of them and is likely to be just as disgruntled.
  3. Good stuff.
  4. Chelios and the dude from Desperate Housewives look pretty darn good too.
  5. He got 2 off eBay, the other he stole from Jack Klugman.
  6. Strikeout rates are one thing. An inflated ERA and sub-.500 record are others. Because Estes got more flyouts or groundouts instead of the crazy K rates Hill has put up doesn't make him any less of a pitcher. Compare the W-L record, ERA, WHIP, etc. of the two and tell me there are no similarities.
  7. Rich Hill reminds me of Shawn Estes with slightly better control.
  8. A bit off topic, but after seeing how the Reds organization has been going over the past few years, I wouldn't go out on a limb and suggest they learned from anyone or anything. :)
  9. Murton has excellent discipline at the plate and great bat control. He lacks the power a lot of teams desire for a corner outfielder, though. Just to add, in his prime you can probably expect a 25ish homer a year hitter. Gee, remember when hitting 25 dongs meant you were a power hitter? :-k
  10. What am I missing when it comes to Rich Hill? Is it because he was rated as having the best curve in the organization, or the fact that he led the minors in K's? Either way, he has yet to do anything to show that he will be anything more than an average, at best, major leaguer. That curve and a bunch of K's do not add up to much when you give up a run or two every other inning. Prior to this season, he had a minor league record of 8-15 and was 7-16 at Michigan (extremely weak baseball conference) before that.
  11. I remember him killing us in a double dip last year. Dump Macias and get him on board. Maybe Pitt would take Ben Grieve for him. :)
  12. We're averaging 9 runs a game now that Corey is gone. Leave the team alone. :D
  13. I think a lot of that has to do with what Corey can do while in Iowa. If he can show signs that he is getting his swing back or show more patience, he will definitely net something of value in a trade. However, if he goes there and hits .250 with a K/BB ratio of 5:1, then he may never again crack a major league roster and would become basically useless.
  14. Regardless of who starts for the AL, I hope Clement is added to the roster if Halladay pulls out.
  15. Anyone else catch that earlier? He basically said he thinks Corey will be dealt as the Cubs are ready to turn the page. I don't have a direct quote from him, but that was the gist.
  16. I made the effort in '03 (right before I hung out at Rod Beck's RV), and I am glad I did. Trenidad's cell phone rang as he came out to sign autographs, and he picked it up and said "I'm busy, I'll give you a call back". He spent about 30 minutes playing and joking around with all of the kids that waited and triple-checked to make sure he signed for everyone that waited before he went back inside. He had a huge smile on his face the entire time.
  17. they also fired their manager. As did the '03 Marlins...
  18. Is there room for one more?
  19. Last I knew, players on the 60-day DL didn't count against the 40 man roster. If that is true, the roster sits at 39 with my count.
  20. No need to put in a plug, we already enjoy reading your columns.
  21. I actually am wondering if he requested to be released to make room for CPat and Dubois. He grew up in Chicago as a Cubs fan and has been coming back to Des Moines in the hopes of making it to Wrigley again. I have met the man, and he is one of the nicest guys you would ever want to meet. My gut feeling when I heard of his release was that he said it was his time to go. Heck, after Ronny was called back up, he did become the I-Cubs best hitter.
  22. As long as we're dreaming, my lineup assumes a couple of trades and the Trib cutting the purse string... 1. RF - Ichiro 2. LF - Vlad 3. SS - A Rod 4. 1B - D Lee 5. 3B - Aramis 6. C - Varitek 7. CF - Pie * 8. 2B - Ronny Cedeno * * I had to keep a couple of our young ones in there.
  23. Murton could go 4-4 and drive in 4, and we wouldn't see him in the lineup the next day.
  24. In his last 4 starts, he was 0-2 (2 ND) with an ERA of nearly 6 and a WHIP over 1.7. He started going south before the move to the pen.
