  1. I don't remember seeing CPatt...or any of those guys, really, smiling all the time (or any more than most players). I never cared for JJ as a player, but I don't remember feeling like he wasn't trying or didn't care. He just wasn't terribly efficient, given the other options available (and he couldn't throw very far). Bradley sure as hell cared, like psycho-level cared. But if they were all happy-go-lucky, smiling all the time, it probably wasn't the strikeouts. It was probably the death threats. Those are real heart-warmers. I guess when you pick 3 black players and say they have an attitude and say that a couple latin players are lazy, all without any basis in reality, well...perception becomes reality.
  2. You make it sound as though all you need to do is go out and get a failed prospect, and PRESTO, hole filled. Lets go jump on Jeff Clement, Andy Laroche, and Matt Bush and we'll be good. I do agree that its a good idea to try and aquire these kinds of guys when they become available, but you cant count on them being anything more than role players or AAAA guys. Im sure for every one of the guys on your list, there are plenty more who another team has auditoned and they never made it off the bench or AAA. is your plan to just name 3-5 names in every post in this thread?
  3. But Brendan Ryan's stache makes me want to punch him in the face.
  4. I'm off the bandwagon. I was fine with the no-name manager and didn't (and still don't) want Ryno. But [expletive] off Quade.
  5. http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/07/19/lsu-lands-one-year-probation-plaudits-from-ncaa/related/ i'm guessing student worker 2 was really, really ugly and prospect 1 slept on the couch.
  6. marketability? to cubs fans? the people that would want ryno as manager are the people who are going to buy tickets no matter how bad the team is. these are not rational people. and the majority of what wants him? the owners? the fanbase? the players? finally, hiring a manager before a gm makes very little sense, esp when the manager was turned down for the job just last year and has done nothing in the interim to improve his candidacy. this isn't torre or larussa or some other guy that baseball people think walks on water. He's got Leigh Valley with the second best record in the international league and is on his way to 4 winning seasons out of his first 5 managing. Whether that is an improvement, I dont know. But its not like Sandberg has done anything to hurt himself. sorry, add "significantly" before "improve" - point being, he's not a guy you hire as manager as soon as he becomes available, regardless of the fact that your gm is about to be replaced.
  7. Duh! I would be shocked if Hendry and Quade are here next year. and Ryno is gonna be our next manager. Book it! I would be surprised if a new GM comes in and the first thing he does to put his imprint on the team is hire Ryne Sandberg as manager. I wouldn't be surprised if Sandberg is hired before a GM. It makes sense just on marketability and I'm guessing the majority wants him. marketability? to cubs fans? the people that would want ryno as manager are the people who are going to buy tickets no matter how bad the team is. these are not rational people. and the majority of what wants him? the owners? the fanbase? the players? finally, hiring a manager before a gm makes very little sense, esp when the manager was turned down for the job just last year and has done nothing in the interim to improve his candidacy. this isn't torre or larussa or some other guy that baseball people think walks on water.
  8. this is terrible in so many ways.
  9. I'm sorry, but LaRussa is God (only drunk). If you aren't a star for TLR, you won't make it for any manager.
  10. just a pathetic bunt attempt in the 9th of a 1-run game. Time to send him back down to AAA.
  11. No, I really don't, mainly because none of us know what the threshold is. OK, so he does it his first 3 AB. Then they shift back and all of a sudden he's not bunting. Do they shift back into the shift? I just don't see managers falling for it. They're too stubborn that way, nor do I see a slugger willing to try such a thing. It's just never going to happen. You think they're too stubborn to play a straight up defensive alignment? It's not like the shift takes 300 points off the hitter's OPS. Managers would absolutely make that change, the fans and media would rake them over the coals if they got beat by it over and over and over. assuming any ML slugger actually bunted enough to make an opposing manager consider changing his defense to account for it (which i think is a crazy assumption), isn't the change most likely simply to put the 3B back to 3B rather than where the SS normally stands? You wouldn't have to eliminate the entire shift to account for a bunt toward 3B. Presumably the 3B isn't expected to cover all that much ground at SS anyway, since he is a 3B afterall. So the manager isn't giving up that much in terms of probable outs by putting him back even with the bag at 3rd.
  12. Mizzou was/is big on Kiel as well, but they got a commit from Maty Mauk this morning, so that should help IU's chances. If it's not Mizzou, I'd rather see IU get Kiel. It also appears the Kiel will not be heading to OU either now. Looks like this will become an Indiana, ND, and Michigan battle. Looks like ND pulled back on both Mauk on Kiel some time ago. Rumor that Kelly doesn't like either of them for his system. Makes some sense with Kiel since he's pro-style (though he's a 5* and #1 QB) and Mauk runs that weird offense his dad basically created for him. Or it could be that both soured on ND b/c they've got 4 QBs all with 2-5 years left, including Golson who Kelly is really, really high on. Who knows, but either way, I don't think ND is in the mix for Kiel. I also heard UM was out, but that might just be hopeful speculation by ND fans. Kiel is pretty quiet.
  13. hahahaha
  14. what the hell do they have to do with it? They correlated the Buckner play in 86 with the Bartman play, using examples such as the scapegoat effect both had on their teams and how both events occurred in a Game 6. I understand why they did it (especially considering the producer is a Red Sox fan...lol), but it was a little over the top. I'd say a good 25% of the film consisted of the aftermath of the Buckner play. At the end of it, it was almost like the producer was bragging that the Red Sox were able to overcome their "Buckner curse" with two championships in four years. why don't they correlate buckner to Agon, which would actually make sense?
  15. you want Hendry gone and you wanted it to happen long ago. We got it. But there's a lot wrong with this post.
  16. a) probably not with that specific intent, but with extreme indifference, i imagine b) hiring the bum as a writer is indictment enough of your entire paper. editing his [expletive] after the fact is pointless.
  17. Kelly has been quoted as saying Floyd will play all the games or none of them, which means he is going to play all of them. how in the world do you know that? you think kelly has been this public about it just for show? jesus. what i've heard is kelly has pretty rigorous [expletive] for floyd to complete and if he does it, he'll reinstate for all the games. while he's had 3 alcohol incidents, the first 2 were minor in possession, so i think it's a bit different from stonum. i think stonum is probably fucked.
  18. Why not? Once you get the free stadium, why would you continue to pretend to try? Well, it's worked wonders for Philly. The Pittsburgh model is to wait 2-3 years before stopping to pretend. Did you dictate this post to hardcore? Strike that. Reverse it.
  19. and you all thought this thread would be disappointing.
  20. Seriously, stuff? A journalist, and the best word you can come up with is stuff. We bury that word the first day of 8th grade for my students. What's worse, this isn't the only time he uses that vague, worthless word. I love that it takes 2 sentences for him to lose verb tense. "BCS stripped USC of the 04 title." But then the second sentence is, "If USC gets stripped..." um...that's already happened. You pointed it out in the sentence immediately before this one. Also, it's no longer a hypo.
  21. Right. He's made some questionable decisions with SPs, but he's far from Dusty territory. He's not doing a bunch of micro-managing, from what I've seen. So if he's not causing undo harm to pitchers and not bunting in the first inning, for example, who cares. I wouldn't be surprised if a new GM kept him on, at least in the short term, unless there's a specific manager available that the new guy wants.
  22. can someone explain his signing bonus? it wasn't $10m, but Cot's lists it as $1m "may increase to $7.25M if Samardzija chooses to play baseball over football." and the total value of Shark's contract was $10m ($16.5m if options are exercised). Does the total value include a $1m bonus or the $7.25m bonus? He didn't go back to football, so did he just get almost 75% of his contract value as a signing bonus and has made less than $1m a year for the last 4 years? Or am I misunderstanding this entirely?
  23. ::wrigley23:Soriano ::jeffh:Hendry (more than your average person.) what do all those posters have in common?
