  1. If Wood was offended by this request, then he's insane. For all Hendry's faults, I have no doubt in his ability to skillfully inquire as to Kerry's interest in playing for a title this year. There's no way such a request would piss him off.
  2. I don't know. If Philly is cleaning out their farm system to win it all this year, I wonder what kind of prospect we could get for Wood. Then just sign him again for next year.
  3. It covers up half the hitter's body and probably covers part of the catcher on pitches way inside pitches. It doesn't have to be a dancing Whammy across the bottom of the screen to be a little annoying or distracting to some people. It's hard for me to believe that you can't understand why someone might find that a little distracting.
  4. It doesn't have to be blocking your view to be annoying. It's not as if you're not going to notice a graphic that large on your screen. I don't think they use that on mariners broadcasts but I could see it being distracting.
  5. we really should post more racist [expletive] that we don't agree with, so it's never forgotten.
  6. That guy is from NY. And Weis was a big NJ guy. I think that will drop off. Point is, no single state is crucial for ND. But perception is that ND should protect its home state.
  7. I was going off of CCP's estimate of what we would need, but I have to imagine that 45 million would be the high end for the two of them. Wait. CJ Wilson could make $15m next year? No [expletive] way. At his pace this year, he'll have racked up 10 WAR the last 2 years as a SP. Assume a 4-5 year deal and even with declining productivity he'd still be projected to be "worth" at least 15 mil annually, if not a bit more. I'm not arguing worth. But there's no way he commands that after just 2 years as a starter. He's 30 and was relatively obscure until people looked back at his stats after last year and raised an eyebrow. $10m maybe. $15m for 4+ years would shock me. If he had a 20-win insane year like cliff lee in 08, I could see it. But I can't believe he has that sort of hype now.
  8. Yeah, Swisher was a real mixed bag at the time. People seemed in love with his offensive potential, but there was concern about the flaws in both his offensive and defensive game. Again, not saying history would have repeated itself, but Swisher was pretty bad in 2008, and putting him in RF at Wrigley for half the season could have well exacerbated that. Couple that with the perception of him being the consolation prize after missing out on the real target and his easily targeted attitude by meatballs and I could see him getting chased out of town even before his deal was up. Would have been nice to have him available for 1b, so we could have dumped lee even sooner and not had to spend another $10m on a temp 1b (and I like pena but in hindsight - what a huge waste of money). All hindsight and I liked fukudome. But I like swisher and wanted him in 08. Far from JH's biggest mistake.

  10. To be honest, when you give a player the kind of contract Kosuke got, those are the types of numbers you should be expecting and in his first month or so, of pretty much every season, it really looked like those were the kind of numbers it looked like wed get. Maybe .280/.400/.450 would have been more realistic. how is that realistic?
  11. oh of course. but the stats he pumped out for fukudome to convince nsbb of his impending greatness were second to none. it just didn't take as long to realize how wrong he was about greene and towles.
  12. first post in a search for meph and fukudome. seems like a fair summary, from what i could remember. his love of fukudome was second only to his love of our lord and savior (tebow)

  14. I hope so too, but I heard the interview and it seemed like a genuine answer. As opposed to what? Was he flat-out asked about Hendry? Yes, he was asked specifically about whether he would see Hendry as his General Manager if he were in a President-type position with the Cubs and he said something to the effect of he would "see no reason not to keep Hendry" as the GM and went on to praise Hendry for his knowledge and past success. It wasn't the typical "we would have to assess the situation and determine what is best for the future of the team" type answer. That's a great answer from a guy in Gillick's shoes.
  15. I got tickets for last Saturday for just over half of face value. S. 123. Got them on stubhub on Wednesday or Thursday. There weren't any cheap tickets until about Tuesday though. And that was the Stros.
  16. Wasn't just his scouts. Maybe I'm not remembering right, but weren't there a lot of scouting reports, not just from the Cubs, out there comparing him to Matsui? The general consensus seemed to be some kind of wonderful middle ground between Matsui and Ichiro. Am I mis-remembering, or was Meph really high on Fukudome?
  17. Didn't you make this joke (just as poorly) in another thread a day or two ago?
  18. Right, that's comparable. IU succeeding in football, to the degree they can, would essentially have no effect on me. It's not like Notre Dame and IU are consistently battling for recruits, and it's not like I said I hope IU is gonna compete for titles. I just have a few friends who are fans, that's all. Not sure why it's such a big deal, and I certainly apologize for offending all the non-IU B1G fanboys. If IU became above average, they'd be battling Notre Dame for recruits. At least the top state kids, and maybe some solid Illinois kids. It would probably be more damaging to Notre Dame's recruiting for someone like Rutgers to get good rather than Indiana. Indiana/Illinois combined only produces 3 of 4 recruits per year for ND and most of those guys are more in Purdue territory than Indiana territory. It's pretty inconsequential. Rutgers? No. I agree it's not a huge deal. But NJ isn't an ND hot bed or anything. It would only be significant in that when there's a high-4 or 5-star recruit in ND and he fits ND's system, ND should get him (in ND's opinion and recruiting services' opinions, etc). If they don't, it's a black mark on ND to some degree. The more football programs they have to compete with in Indiana, the worse it is on ND. But the risk on IU becoming a legit football school anytime soon seems pretty minor.
  19. If that's the deal, I don't really care if we pay all of his salary. Fukudome is of no value to us this year. 2 decent but flawed prospects is a fine return. And we can sign fukudome after the season if we're so inclined. I want the cubs to make a few small trades like this. I don't want to part with any of our players that would net the top guy is another team's system. So move small pieces for projects that may help down the road and don't [expletive] up this off-season.
  20. I clearly was going off reputation and hadn't looked at his stats since well before the lockout began. I had no idea he had been that terrible when healthy the past few years. I still don't dislike the signing, though. Locker's almost certainly not ready to start the season and since the Titans most likely aren't going to be better than an average team this year it won't really matter if Hasselbeck isn't good/gets hurt. My preference of Hasselbeck over McNabb was primarily based on not having to trade anything (even though the Vikings didn't give much for Donovan) for Hasselbeck and the fact that Hasselbeck is a bit more suited to a pure west coast offense than McNabb. I also thought Hasselbeck had been better than he had . . . Yeah I wasn't totally aware of that either. But I still stand by it. Getting him a change of scenery and putting him in a run-first offense might help. I'm not expecting anything amazing, but I still think he has something left and can be a good mentor for Locker. So you didn't know he's been terrible for years but he's still the best option out there, despite being demonstrably worse than another option that was out there?
  21. CPatt and Theriot would be a deadly 1-2 punch at the top of the order.
  22. How many spots does Michigan have left open? Am I mistaken in thinking they're pretty close to full?
