  1. more insane: Zambrano or Ozzie Guillen?
  2. There's also a Texas House of Reps hearing on the 16th... They have no legislative powers whatsoever. The Texas legislature doesn't meet again until 2013 and can only be called into a special session by the governor. Gov. Rick Perry is an Aggie. 8 of the 9 members of that board have accepted political contributions (most of them have received multiple) from a PR firm that has been hired by UT and is heavily involved in lobbying. I'm sure they can, as long as OU decides to stay. They've apparently already reached out to the Univeristy of Houston to replace us. Does it matter who replaces A&M in the Longhorn Conference?
  3. so some anonymous poster on a northwestern board says nd will blindly follow texas into the big ten? I guess that settles that. Not going to happen. The LHN contract with ESPN prevents them from being shown on any conference network. It's either keep the Big 12 alive or go independent at this point. The Big 10, SEC, and Pac 12 all have conference networks, right? right - it's not going to happen. ND isn't joining the big ten and texas isn't giving up it's network to join the big ten network (nor would the 2 networks coexist). it's far more likely to me that texas goes fb independent.

  5. Any team, yes. I'm assuming at least one team would be happy to have Marmol and his contract. Meanwhile, you are assuming *no* team would want Marmol and his contract. That's the only condition under which it is a "bad" contract, when the context is his trade value. A bad contract implies it represents negative value to everyone. I'll leave it to the assembled masses to determine which position is more reasonable. It's only a bad contract if no other team would take it? Come on. That's ridiculous.
  6. These reports are crazy. From a lot of what I've read, I think I'd like Hendry. But I'd still fire his ass in a heartbeat.
  7. Wait, so we shouldn't ever legislate morality?
  8. To balance out those insane mandatory minimums for crack.
  9. Of course not. UM said that new ESPN QB Rating showed those guys in the same category as him and I just pointed out that FO's numbers also had a couple of those guys ahead of him. That doesn't mean they're better or that anyone would take those guys over Cutler, just that different stats said those guys had an equivalent or better season than he did last year. And it seems the one 'stat' you pointed to is swayed heavily by 1 factor largely outside of his control.
  10. If we let hawkeyecub or Erik draft a bears team from scratch, they would.
  11. I know Texas generally views Texas HS kids as their property to accept or reject as the school sees fit but that's bot quite the way it works nor should it. As Snood pointed out, there are a couple schools that go head to head with Texas and there are other schools that do so less regularly than ou or atm. Yet one of your justifications is that it doesn't given Texas much of an advantage. Any additional advantage is unfair, you understand that, right? Or you'd be ok with every other school getting a few more days of allowed contact with recruits or 1 more in-house visit with recruits than Texas. I mean, that's not much of an advantage.
  12. Most midseason trades do not have physicals. I would just wonder why a team would refuse one, though. Would a player likely not pass one during the season due to the toll on the body? It just seems extremely suspicious to me. Who knows what the ny doctor might find. And whatever they find will quickly become public. So trade him somewhere that doesn't demand a physical if you have any concerns at all (and he's a ML pitcher, so you have concerns).
  13. Sneakypower thinks trout might be a good reclamation project.
  14. Maybe that's true. Obviously closers net top returns. But guys with Marshall's K, BB, & HR numbers for 2 straight years should do pretty well. I guess it seems that big curve LHs that don't throw hard are accepted as effective more than similar RHs. Doesn't matter. I don't want to trade him anyway.
  15. maybe not but moving to the AL and that park down their can be like coors in the summer time. Really though its amazing that he has sustained such a low babip compared to marshall's being so high while being two comparable pitchers. What about other SD pitchers? So they have similarly low babip? Seems like the entire cubs staff has suffered bc of [expletive] defense. Maybe most SD pitchers are seeing a bump bc of good D. I'm admittedly spit-balling.
  16. Adams' numbers are still phenomenal away from Petco, and he's been doing it for four years now. Don't get me wrong, I love what Marshall has become, but man, I hope he has a run like Adams'. You keep saying soft tossing LH as if that's a huge strike against him. I thought LH pitchers were at least if not more valuable than their RH counterparts. Am I reading something into your posts that isn't intended? It is a strike against him in terms of the idea that the Cubs missed out on an opportunity to trade him for a big return, so yes, you're reading into it incorrectly. I think Marshall is very, very valuable to the Cubs and very, very good...but he's not going to bring enough back to justify trading him. I wholly agree with your last sentence. I just don't see why the soft tossing lefty thing is relevant go that. He's a strikeout machine that doesn't give up walks or HRs. The fact that he's also LH makes him a god (not the God, I don't think).

  18. Yes. I'm not sure I disagree. We have no impact bats at the high minor level and we have a lot of decent to good prospects. It's Jim's fault, but those two statements can be, and apparently are, accurate. Now, that also assumes Hendry knows not only how good our prospects are but how good the prospects offered are. That might be a leap of faith I'm not willing to make.
  19. Jim Hendry just told Buster Olney: "Look, I tried to trade Baker, but the only offer was a steaming pile of crap. I guess he's not worth anything."
  20. And this justifies trading Baker...how? The organization values him because he's useful, and he is. Again, question marks at potentially both 2B and 3B next year. Baker's abilities against lefties and being able to play both spots makes him valuable to the Cubs as a bench and platoon player. On the flipside, his skills are limited to the point that he's not going to net much of anything in return. There's no pressing need to trade him now since, like Byrd, he can just be traded for a likely meaningless return next year instead of this year. The Baker stuff probably keeps coming up b/c Hendry said he was "untouchable." Most fans apply that tag sparingly. Hendry more likely meant that Baker's at least as valuable to the Cubs in 2012 as he is to any other team (or at least what they're willing to pay. That is an angle I hadn't considered. FA's generally follow the money, but you don't want to be forced to offer something above and beyond like a Soriano or Werth deal in order to get a big FA to come either. This is a great point. Is it also possible that Hendry doesn't have authority to make any significant moves (b/c he's going to be fired at the end of the year)?
  21. you know i go commando. and the OP clearly stated that he found it annoying b/c he knows where the strike zone is and doesn't want the image on the screen to tell him. you continue to ask about it, so it appears you're having difficulty accepting that others find it annoying.
  22. I've never seen either strike zone in a game I've watched, that I can remember. I haven't watched an ESPN game in quite some time (and I don't remember seeing it on HD games). I don't recall the FSN strike zone being on FSN Detroit broadcasts and I haven't seen it yet this year on Mariners broadcasts. But just from the posts here, I can understand why some people would find it annoying. That's all I'm saying. Some people might find this new image in their viewing area to be distracting. I find it weird that you can't accept that people would have a different reaction to this than yours, I guess. But whatever, this discussion has gone on far too long and wasn't really interesting in the first place.
  23. http://www.chicagobears.com/news/NewsStory.asp?story_id=8008 who knows what else Lovie had to say, but this doesn't scream 'he was my favorite player and this move sucks.' he's not going to come out strongly one way or the other, but he didn't even say some of those PC things you hear from a coach sometimes when a player leaves.
  24. you understand that to be distracting, it doesn't have to partially or entirely cover something you want to see. A relatively large image in your viewing area may distract or annoy some folks. if it stays there a while, it will become part of the normal watching experience and likely come to be ignored. but for some period of time (that I imagine differs by viewer), it's distracting. can we just accept that and move on?
  25. Calling Barber a great goal line back is a huge stretch. He was terrible all around last year including goal line carries. Just tell Robert Hughes that every opposing team is 2010 USC and sit back and enjoy the touchdowns.
