  1. They had been playing Michael Siani over him in CF until he got hurt and he had this season line, so I think that tells most of the story.
  2. Probably also worth taking into account the Cubs have said they don't mess with a guy's swing until they struggle and we haven't really seen that happen with Shaw to this point. He's had a couple weeks here and there where he ran cold but nothing to indicate some fatal flaw that needed to be fixed.
  3. I said on Monday that unless they go 7-2 or better this week, I'm not even thinking about a playoff push. 4-1 is a good start but with Skenes looming tonight that probably means they need to sweep in Washington and that's likely going to include a double header on Sunday based on the current weather forecast.
  4. Their player development structure is just hot garbage right now. I've heard rumblings that they have a lot fewer coaches at all levels than just about any other franchise and it feels like that's really showing these days.
  5. It's absolutely mind boggling to me that an adjustment as minor as going to a toe drag instead of a leg kick has made such a world of difference for Amaya. Watching PCA figure it out in real time is pretty fantastic to watch too.
  6. I love stuff like this. Apparently on Sunday night, the Diaz brothers both gave up walk off homers. No idea if that's ever happened before but the fact that first time things are still happening in a 150 year old game is wild.
  7. I'm gonna derail us for a minute here. I'm going to DC Saturday for the games Saturday and Sunday. There's currently an 80% chance of rain for Saturday afternoon and evening with a 4:00 start planned. Say it rains and they don't get the game in Saturday. Are they playing 2 on Sunday and what time does game 1 start if so?
  8. Zero with that salary. Maybe once he clears waivers and they wouldn't be on the hook for the remainder of the $5 million.
  9. I'd bet this pushes Walker inside more frequently and shores up the DT depth that way.
  10. Reminds me of Jason Bere. Build is similar and he had a little bit of a weird arm action.
  11. If they can go 7-2 or better in the next 9 against the Marlins, Pirates, and Nationals, I'll believe they have a chance. That would put them at 70-67 with 25 games to go and at that point 16-9 isn't an unfathomable thought to finish the year.
  12. He made $750K last year and is slated to make $795K this year. That doesn't excuse the owners making him pay that much, but it's not like he can't afford it.
  13. I think it's much more tied to wanting to get a look at Neely against ML hitters to find out what you have for next year or if there are adjustments he needs to make. The 40/26 man roster spot had to be a consideration, especially when you're looking at maybe guys like Birdsell and Killian needing innings to finish the year with the Cubs.
  14. No, he would have had to have been claimed off waivers. If he signs somewhere they pay the prorated portion of league minimum for the rest of the year, so the Cubs get maybe $150K of relief at best.
  15. Isn't his velocity down noticeably this year? Feels like it would be a bad investment regardless.
  16. Let's see where they are in 2 weeks. They've already taken a beating this month and it's not letting up yet.
  17. Radio broadcast said Happ's was the longest Cub HR of the year.
  18. Stick him in the rotation in place of Hendricks.
  19. He's one of Tom's pets and that's really it.
  20. This ESPN top 100 is, uh, something. Wildly different than anything else we've seen. 37. Moises Ballesteros, C, Chicago Cubs/AAA, Age: 20.7 60. Kevin Alcantara, CF, Chicago Cubs/AAA, Age: 22.1 63. Owen Caissie, RF, Chicago Cubs/AAA, Age: 22.1 74. Matt Shaw, 3B, Chicago Cubs/AAA, Age: 22.8 95. Cade Horton, RHP, Chicago Cubs/AAA, Age: 23.0 99. Jefferson Rojas, SS, Chicago Cubs/High-A, Age: 19.3 https://www.espn.com/mlb/insider/story/_/id/40846519/2024-midseason-top-100-mlb-prospects-rankings-update-kiley-mcdaniel
  21. How many other teams have guys at 24 like Birdsell who have an actual real shot at being an MLB contributor? That seems really far back in that list for a guy with his potential.
  22. Right, but what he's saying is the original injury report was in fact a lat strain so until we get confirmation from the Cubs, the subscapularis report is just conjecture and that's a reasonable take here.
  23. Can we just restrict Tom to the minor league forum and improve everyone's experience vastly in the process?
