His writing in the P-D panders to the St. Louis sheep. He actually speaks pretty intelligently and calls out Cardinal and fan stupidity on his radio show on a regular basis. He also, surprisingly, is a huge stats/saber guy (well, he uses stats all the time and he weighs 300+ lbs). And he hates TLR's guts because of the way he treats people. The writing is much different than his real point of view, but I think he gets reigned in a little by the paper and isn't really allowed to do what he wants. Pretty terrible of him to let that happen, but whatever.

Pat and Ron keep mentioning it looks like Franklin is throwing a knuckleball.

If Marquis can give us one more shutout inning, you really can't ask for much more from him. Not bad outside of the 2nd.

Those don't mean much since one is a starter and the other is a reliever. Marshall is used mostly when he has the matchup advantage, so you'd expect his ERA+ to be fairly good. Except if he was bad he wouldn't have that good of a nuber since he has started several games and wouldn't still be in the bigs if he hadn't done pretty darn well. Not to mention the 3 IP and 1 run he gave up in Harden's last start.

You know better than to use 32-inning stats. This is exactly what I'm talking about. People seem completely incapable of intellectual honesty with regards to Jason Marquis. I don't think honesty is the issue. It's the high percentage of the time that Marquis doesn't perform well plus the money he's being paid vs. the relative cheapness and potential for improvement from a guy like Marshall. Not that any of that prevents the numbers from saying something different than perception. And I think WHIP is a fine indication of how good a pitcher is, it just has to be used in conjunstion with a couple of others to get the whole picture. It's good for a quick and dirty look at performance.

Well, yeah, but at least saber stuff has some use in the real world. And I could be completely off here, but I think there's a lot better chance of making money by being profficient with saber than WoW.

The Z and Fontenot thing kind of reminds me of Pedro and his midget buddy, Nelson whatever. Except Fontenot can hit a baseball.

If you guys recall, last time she was at Wrigley she was wearing a pretty revealing bright yellow dress and one of the ESPN guys made a comment about it and she said "It's for a boy". I can only assume that she is dating some dude in the Chicago area and was skimpily dressed for him more so than anything else. I don't recall seeing her in anything else very slutty (unfortunately) in other appearances she's made on ESPN. Although she does look like she has a huge rack when she does a college hoops game.

Hasn't Mussina been pretty solid since his horrible April? Looked it up: 1.23 WHIP, 3.56 ERA, but a little high on the .282 BAA, although he doesn't walk anybody. Joba and Pettitte are good, but who knows if Joba will hold up the whole year. I think they've got as good a shot as anybody with the offense they have the potential to throw out there every night.

The CG against the Cards was 106 pitches I believe. All his other starts with the Brewers have been 110+ if I remeber right and then he threw 124 on Monday. Sheets is a walking injury just about every year and you need to be careful with him if you expect him to do anything down the stretch for you. CC, as somebody else said, looked like he was tired in the playoffs last year. To top it all off, they are in fact #1 and 3 in PAP. You do see good managers ride their pitchers for big pitch counts but the next start or 2 they back them off a little. I wouldn't be surprised to see Dempster only throw 90 pitches or so in his next outing. Z on threw about 95(?) the game after his 130 pitch performance. You can ride the guys, but they need a break occasionally to keep them fresh and healthy. ETA: CC's pitch counts-97, 110, 122, 106, and 124

He's been really good when he's only been playing 3-4 times a week. It may sacrifice some scoring in the short run, but playing him sparingly could pay off in September and October.

Pretty simple...walking the lefty to get to the righty for the better matchup. Seems pretty sound to me with a guy like Fielder at the plate. And it worked. Good work by Gaudin.

He didn't so much get the nod over Edmonds as he got the start because Edmonds needed an extra day off due to his multitude of injuries, specifically the knee in this case.

He threw 61 pitches in his 1st outing with 30 or 31 strikes and threw somewhere in the 70s in the second with low 40s in strikes I believe. He's obviously struggling with command with as many balls as he's throwing for a guy who had such good command before he got hurt.

Giordano's is good, Lou Malnati's is the nectar of the gods. Go to Murphy's or the Cubbie Bear before the game for a few beers to get the experience. I have to agree with another poster, good restaurants in Chicago are like hot chicks at the Playboy mansion. Another interesting place to go is Dick's Last Resort. Look it up, it's interesting. Try the Chicago style dog at the game or at a Vienna beef place. And you're not allowed to put ketchup on it, but get everything else on it.

This is one of the few instances where I can really say that the Cards kind of screwed themselves. Duncan can only get success from one type of guy and Reyes didn't want to/ have the ability to pitch to contact like the Duncan system dictates. I think within 2 years you'll see Reyes pitching at the level of a solid 3-4 man and getting quite a few strikeouts just because they'll let him be what he is, a power pitcher who likes to throw that 4 seamer high in the zone and use his off speed stuff as his strikeout pitch.

Or, it was his 1st ML outing and he didn't look too bad. Either way, his career path isn't going to be determined by today's outing. I think we all remember Wellemeyer's ML debut.

Wasn't there talk earlier this year of him making a concious effort to not throw as hard and therefore get more movement on his pitches? I have to think that would have something to do with missing less bats due to a decrease in velocity but the contact that is made isn't as solid because of the added movement.

Its the same comments, year after year. Its more funny than it is annoying. Hey I understand being a superfan for your team, but these comments come off making the author sound silly and not well informed. Yeah Im a Cardinal fan. Sometimes you find relevant debate and information, more often you dont, like the above. On that note, what would say to a four gamer with the Brew, now with the improved top of your rotation. Going in would you take a split and move on (depending how the rotations are set up)? Four gamers are a pain usually. Good luck everyone. I can understand being annoyed at something like this in years past, but the Cards have a bunch of journeymen having career years this year. Miles, Ludwick, Lohse, Pineiro, Wellemeyer, and Schumaker are all having career years. I'll give on Ankiel because he's still learning how to hit and how to be a ML player, but the rest are just playing out of their minds. In other years, yeah, that would be a dumb statement, but this year you can't deny it's true unless you're wearing those Cardinal colored sunglasses. Maybe these guys have all discovered something that is making them better (no, I'm not talking PEDs) and will continue to be as good as they have been this year, but somehow I doubt that will happen. That's why so many people, experts included, are so shocked by the Cards performance this year and continue to expect them to regress. I hope they do, but maybe they don't. It'll be a fun 2.5 months to the end.

So which one of those guys had TJS end their career? I'm fairly certain at this point that the list of ML guys who have come back from TJS and been successful in the last 10 years is longer than the list of ML guys who have had a career ended or completely changed from it.

Isn't Lilly signed thru 2010? I thought his deal was 4/$40.
