  1. The Purdue game is home and MSU away, but yeah, that schedule is weird. I think if they can get to 8-2, they can get to 10 wins for sure by beating Michigan and Minnesota. If Luers is out for an extended period, I like our chances against Bucky at the Hall. I think they can get 1 of the 4 against MSU or Purdue as well, but they may have to because I have no doubt they'll give one away that they shouldn't.
  2. From what I heard this morning, he said after the game that he couldn't feel his right arm. I'm guessing there was no way he could come back in. I'm pretty sure it's hard to throw a pass accurately if you can't feel your arm.
  3. Seven year contract? He got lucky? hmm More cardinal fan butt licking. Said something in the presser about not wanting to wear 15 long term because of how respected Edmonds was. I almost puked on my desk. Boras is really good at feeding his clients crap to say. There were a couple others he dropped in as well that I don't remember right now
  4. Does Forte's performance have more to do with those teams being bad and him taking advantage or the line not being able to block anybody but those crappy D lines? Honest question, I have no idea, but I don't think you can entirely blame him for his performance, whether the knee was a big factor or not. I think he has some responsibility because there were a few games I did see where he just didn't get through a hole that was there quick enough and turned an 8 yard gain into 2.
  5. This is the important thing. Even before Holliday, they were definitely a stars and scrubs team. Now they're committing a huge portion of their payroll to Pujols, Holliday, Carpenter, and Lohse. Only for 2010 and 2011. And the team is in good position to win the division those two years. Not really an issue. Right, but you know they have to keep Pujols to make this signing worthwhile. And who replaces Carpenter when his deal is up? They certainly don't have anybody special in the minors who will be ready to fill that hole by then. The kid they just drafted (Shelby Miller?) may well be close to the bigs by then but there's no way he'll be a Cy Young candidate that early. They'll have to pay Pujols and then probably pay Carpenter another $10M or so to keep him around if his arm is still attached at that point.
  6. Why do people think Pujols gave the Cards a discount on his last contract? They bought out years of arbitration that would have been at a significantly lower salary that he was paid (avg annual value anyway) for those years. What was his deal, 7 years/$100M? That's $14.3M/year and he would have gotten at least $5-7M lees for the 2 years of arby that were bought out. The Cardinals didn't have everything go right for them last year. Lohse was hurt most of the year (not that I think he's worth the $42M they gave him), Ankiel was awful, they got nothing from 3B because of Glaus being hurt, and they sent away all their good/decent prospects for Holliday and Derosa. They did have a lot of things go right for them, not the least of which was Holliday playing like he was Musial reincarnated.
  7. First, thank freaking god that Charter has finally added the BTN to their lineup in St. Louis. About damn time. No HD yet, but it's better than nothing. Second, IG, the problem the Illini are having right now is entirely related to an issue that has been fixed: recruiting. If they had gotten any guards that were worth a darn in the last couple years, they wouldn't be relying on 2 freshmen and a walk on to play a combined 80-90 minutes every night. If they had a more veteran team, I can guarantee defense wouldn't be nearly the issue it has been. And to even think Frazier wouldn't have made a huge difference in the tourney game last year is ridiculous. The defense would have been better, the intensity would have been higher and I really think people underestimate how much of a leader he truly was for that team. That's another area sorely lacking right now is on court leadership, and you could probably sub out Frazier for either Paul or DJ this year and have a better record because the defense and general consistency of play would be better.
  8. So if they go 10-8, you don't think they'll make it? I'd be willing to bet you're wrong. 3 non-con wins over ranked teams will go a long way to getting in. The losses may hurt, but really only 2 of them are bad and none at home. When was the last time a team with good non-con wins and winning record in the B10 didn't go to the dance? I do feel your frustration though. The complete inability to get a shot at the end of a game is really getting old.
  9. Because it wouldn't have mattered. When was the last time you saw them run something decent at the end of a game whether they took a TO or not?
  10. Yes, and I was getting strange looks from the other people at the gym for bitching about the travels that weren't getting called and the chicken wings to get around the corner in the post. Also, Illinois may be the stupidest basketball team I've ever been a fan of. They do so many dumb things, and not just the freshmen, it's everybody. If Weber ever wants to win big games, they need to be blow outs because it has become apparent he has no clue how to draw up anything at the end of a game or half. And I've been a big supporter of his since he got here, but this is getting ridiculous.
  11. If he sits for just a year, then yeah, he gets one semester. If he sits for 3 semesters, he'll get a full year.
  12. No way that happens. First, I don't think Pujols is a guy that would do that. Second, the contract he is under right now is below his current market value because when he signed it, it bought out a couple years of arbitration where he would have been paid significantly less than the $14M avg or whatever the contract is worth. Plus, how often do you really see a contract in baseball ripped up? More often, you see years added on with maybe a slight renegotiation of the remaining years.
  13. There was talk down here on sports radio yesterday that he doesn't want to sign a deal for less than the avg annual value of whatever Colorado offered him that he turned down. That was like a 4 or 5 year $18M per I think? If it does end up over that, it'll be because there are option years and incentives that Boras will make them include just so he can save face and say he got Holliday his $18-19M per year deal. I think he'll be with them and it may be an 8 year deal with only 5-6 years guaranteed.
  14. Yeah, the Clippers immediately came to mind when I thought about it.
  15. that's the tri-fecta. It could give us a good boost rebuilding the team. Trouble is, do you trust Hendry to be the guy responsible for getting max value in return? And not just trusting Hendry to get the best value, but trusting him to not devalue those guys at the same time he makes it known they're available. And no, at this point I don't trust him to do either.
  16. You can't eliminate the risk of a bad deal because of the dollars we're talking about, but you do have to minimize risk to allow for future spending and improvements. Nearly everyone with a brain in their heads cringed when the Soriano deal was announced. Not because of the annual value, but because of the 8 freaking years in length. $17-18M for 5 years wouldn't have been bad, but the those last 3 years are going to kill the payroll. Which, getting back to Byrd, is why there wouldn't be outrage at a 2/$12 deal, but when you go to 3/$20-21M, people start getting a little bent out of shape. The next 2 years, you probably need him, but why give him the extra year when you may well have production available from Colvin, Burke, or even Jackson in CF by that time.
  17. Seriously, you don't even care about trying now. Not sure what this is supposed to mean. I'm not advocating that the Cubs should be run like the Marlins. No, but you're trying to make an issue that isn't nearly black and white be black and white. Marlins or Yankess with no middle ground when there clearly is. The Cardinals are a mid-level payroll team and have done a pretty good job of being competitive most years. They've made smart moves in acquiring players and have mostly avoided that deadly long term deal that cripples you for years. They also haven't sold off players and rebuilt every 3-4 years. And they haven't signed any huge FAs either. It can be done. People are pissed because Hendry has not only made some questionable moves in wasting money on lower level FAs, but has now effectively handcuffed the club for the future by signing guys like Bradley, Soriano, and Z to huge deals and dishing out the NTCs he has.
  18. How much more do you think he'll actually get if signed as a catcher vs. 1B? Also, assuming it's going to be a 5-7 year deal, wouldn't it be worth it to maybe overpay for a guy like that with a fantastic track record and really good peripherals to play 1B for 150-160 games a year and do the best you can to guarantee he's healthy for the duration of the contract than to have him play 130 games a year and possibly get hurt or fall off a cliff in the 4th or 5th year of that deal? All of this is assuming of course that Soto doesn't continue to be terrible like he was this year.
  19. My biggest issue is that they seem to have no idea how to get a decent look at the end of the game. I don't know if it's bad coaching or piss poor execution but I'm getting sick of seeing it. The D and rebounding will come, but the end of game stuff has been going on since Dee left.
  20. UMass and Memphis. He was coach at UMass several years ago when they made the Final Four (I believe that was the year UK won the national championship under Pitino). Let's be more specific here. I'm pretty sure it's every school he's ever coached at and left.
  21. And why is any of this true? Because the people in management positions completely fubared the handling of the situation. Suspension, bad mouthing, and just general stupidity in dealing with the situation is what caused it. Get that through your head. If Theo Epstein had the same issue, you wouldn't hear a peep out of him about how difficult the player made the situation. He didn't bad mouth Manny when he had to get rid of him. He may have overpaid to get rid of him, but he got something decent in return. The way the Cubs allowed the situation to play out is the reason that there was a perception the "he couldn't come back". If they kept their mouths shut and dealt with it like adults instead of 10 year olds, Milton might be a Cub still and maybe provided some much needed production next year.
  22. I have tons of issues with batting Theriot in the top 2 slots. It's not ideal but it's better than Pods being the every day CF and hitting there. I guess I worded that poorly. It's the better of the not so great options available.
  23. That would just be monumentally stupid unless Seattle is picking up a chunk of the money he's owed, and you just know that's not happening. Trading 2 yrs/$21M and a productive player for 2yrs/$24M and a guy who didn't pitch last year seems like a great idea to me.
  24. Why do these jackasses seem to think that whoever ends up in CF needs hit at the top of the order? Cameron certainly wouldn't have if they had signed him. I would have no issue with Fuku and either Riot or whoever ends up at 2B hitting at the top with the new CF being in like the 6 or 7 hole. Idiots. Fuku Riot/2B Lee Ramirez Soriano Soto CF Riot/2B Pitcher
  25. No, but Brett Wallace gave it a good shot last weekend. He got pulled over with a BAC of .232. You mean David Freese, or did Wallace run afoul of the law too? You're right, got my Cards farmhands mixed up. Not that Wallace is anymore.
