  1. Eh? Wouldn't Slovenia have 5? No, Slovenia beat Algeria (3), are about to beat us (3) and would get a point for the draw with England (1), totaling 7. Reading=Fundamental
  2. Yeah and we'd still be screwed unless we score 14 goals against Algeria.
  3. You're confusing Oklahoma with Kentucky. And that was a bad flop by Brazil at the top of the 18 yard box. That is by far the worst part of high level (international at least) soccer.
  4. lebron is not the greatest player of all time, even arguably. This is about the NBA.....reading is fundamental.
  5. I thought that would be a good option as well until I looked at his numbers from the last couple years, including so far this year. Ugly, especially if he's asking for a lot of money. My list: Trade-Lilly, Silva, Theriot, Fukudome and Lee if you can get good return, Keep-Gorz, Demp, A near future rotation with Z, Demp, Gorz, Wells, and Cashner or Jackson would look pretty good and also be relatively cheap for the potential quality you'd have. The offense is an entirely different proposition though. That sucks and will take some creativity and bounce back seasons to salvage any time soon.
  6. Because high school courses are only worth one credit. I think I had like 19 credits going into my senior year of high school and only needed 1 or 2 more to graduate. I don't find that too far fetched. It sounds strange, but why he wouldn't be given credit for the "home school" classes from the accredited private school doesn't make much sense to me.
  7. If it is just an experiment to determine if they can handle it mentally and physically before they send them to the bigs later this season, I agree, no big deal. It also might help them to figure out a warm up routine before getting promoted. I also agree that there doesn't seem to be a point to doing it, nothing we've heard about these guys would lead me to believe either one is as mercurial as Z.
  8. I've been in the leave Cashner in Iowa camp, but toonster does make a great point. Maybe leave him there until he hits a little over 100 innings and then bring him up to the big league pen where he'll throw another 30 innings or so to get him to 150ish. It saves his arm a bit and probably helps stabilize the late innings when they have a lead. If that's the way they go with the plan to build more arm strength and get to 180 or so next year, I'm fine with that. So long as they don't do the yoyo thing.
  9. So, yet another reason to hate the Cardinals. No HD for me because stupid KSDK has the Cards game on and I have to watch on whatever crappy station this is.
  10. It's unfortunate they didn't pick the military guy. I'd love to see somebody try to BS him and get called on it. I get the feeling that it doesn't really matter who the talking head is because the NCAA hierarchy seems about as dirty, corrupt and old boy network as Congress is so nothing will ever change or get done.
  11. I would look at it more like them saying "We've been so ridiculously good on the road so far, we're going to try to simulate that to keep the momentum going". I also don't think it'll make much, if any difference, but what the heck, give it a shot. I certainly don't think it's a freak out because they don't think they can win at home.
  12. He's always been thought of as a banger, which is why that chest injury and subsequent weight loss caused him so many problems. His size and bulk were really what made him a solid recruit.
  13. I think Bertrand will be the guy to pick up PG minutes. They could really just run 2 separate units out there to have guys playing together all the time: DMac DJ Richardson Davis Tisdale and the 2nd unit: Bertrand Paul Cole Griffey Leonard
  14. Not a big fan of his reasoning. He insinuates that the Bears have to win the SB or Lovie and Angelo are out the door. I doubt that very much. My guess is a 10 win season would be plenty to guarantee they return. That sort of thing happens all the time. Cowher faced a couple situations where he needed to win to stem the tide of getting canned, and they won. A lot of people have said the 2008 season saved John Fox, while 2007 almost certainly saved Coughlin in NY. Fisher was starting to take heat after three disappointing years until they rebounded. Andy Reid's job continues to be threatened but he keeps making the playoffs when he most needs to succeed. Just this year Childress was almost certainly in a win or your out situation, and he won. He doesn't even come close to saying that. He specifically says they "have to win enough to shoo the wolves away from their doors", which is nothing close to saying they have to win the SB. I will agree that his reasoning elsewhere is terrible though.
  15. So nobody has mentioned the real best part of this. If Castro is in the 8 spot in the lineup, that means that the best hitter in the lineup to date can't get stuck in the 8 spot anymore. Geo for cleanup?
  16. I found this part interesting in regard to service time and arbitration...
  17. Yeah that's like the Yankees sedning Joba Chamberlain or Phil Hughes to the pen at first. Or the Twins sending Johan Santana or Francisco Liriano there. Or the Cardinals sending Adam Wainwright there. Good teams never do that. Damn, you beat me to it. I was going to ask who the closer was on that Cardinals 2006 WS winner. That was certainly a move made out of necessity more than anything else. Of course, there's the yoyo thing the Cubs like to do. If they put him in the pen the rest of the year and leave him, then move him back to starting next year and leave him, fine. Just don't give him the Samardzija treatment.
  18. I had no idea that SIU had landed that good of a recruiting class in '08 or that they had all left. Tough luck for Lowery. http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/sports/stories.nsf/othersports/story/7F87D478DCE5C4B38625771B0006F38F?OpenDocument
  19. If that's the case, then how would you describe the current state of the Pirates?
  20. So Dempster has a shot to finish the game and have pitched pretty well and lose to the freaking Nats. Awesome. The offense is really clicking.
  21. Probably by throwing 4,682 pitches in each one of them. Which is why he can only throw 42 miles per hour now.
  22. Sounds to me like he never signed a deal. If he had, the 49ers would have been able to just hang onto him and make him sit. At any rate, I think the agent is more to blame here than anyone for not doing his due diligence to find the best place for his client. I really don't think Blount was the guy fielding phone calls and going over contract details.
  23. did he not get drafted? what was the knock on him? Several knee surgeries is the big thing, and I've heard a couple reports about his game translating. Some make sense(ability to get off a jam), others make me wonder if they were watching the right player(only average straight line speed). The biggest thing was the knee surgery after the season was over. I think he was getting projected as a 4th-5th round guy before he got hurt at whatever Senior Bowl type game he went to.
  24. why would i wish a thing like that? if i'm making an irrational wish, i'm gonna wish for someone who can coach a little bit. seeing as how self was an average recruiter and below average coach who won with someone else's recruits at illinois, i see no reason why i should want him back. i'm not saying i'd rather have weber, but if i've obtained one of ku's jinns, self isn't at the top of the list. the only thing he excels at is dealing with handlers, beyond that, he has no skill at anything. i mean, he knows how to obtain goods and services for legal tender, i guess that's a skill. he succeeds in recruiting at ku because of all the reasons i've outlined before. in short, ku fans, supporters, alums, and boosters don't care how they win and they have no shame. at illinois, people fear the wrath of God. Nah, we fear illegitimate prosecution at the hands of the NCAA. We're not one of the "big boys" that brings in the huge dollars for the NCAA so we have to play by the rules.
  25. Or you could look at it realistically (at least for the UI guys) and say, man, Weber got a lot out of McBride even though he may have been slightly overrated after the foot injuries that slowed him down a ton and Dee was a really good player but just a touch small to be effective in the NBA the way he plays. I really have no idea what Self did with the giant oaf that Sasha Kaun was and I don't know if I've ever even heard of Darnell Jackson.
