    Your assertion that this guy has been mistake free in his 2 MLB starts is presumptuous at best. He was allowing about 6.5 walks per 9 last year and had a 6.46 ERA in AAA last year and while he's cut that down to a little over 4BB/9 this year, he's still going to miss frequently. This is the kind of pitcher the Cubs lineup should chew up and spit out in 4, maybe 5 innings. This kid is far from fully developed and it's a near guarantee that long term, Horton is a better putcher than Abel. This is also his 5th year as a pro with 94 starts in the minors and Horton is in his 3rd full season with 36 starts in the minors.

    A. I hate the Cardinals. B. Kershaw should stop being a little bitch. Don't give up the HR if you don't want to get trolled. C. One of their starting pitchers is going to go on the IL at some point and they're so thin that it'll kill them. They've gotten all but 3 starts from 5 guys and I'm pretty sure 2 of them were openers or something of that nature.

    Yeah, there's still the art/science of calling a game. As much as I despised him all those years, Molina was probably about the best there's ever been at that and you'll hear almost every pitcher who ever threw to him say that. Definitely still some learning to do there for Mo.

    I'm reading it the same as you. I think the cost of a splashy move right now would be prohibitive, even with the MiL depth the Cubs currently have.

    @Jason Ross any insights on why Gallen has been so bad this year? I see all the indicators are going in the wrong direction (walk 5, K%, hard hit, etc.) but I'm curious if he's just lost location or spin is down or there's something specific he's not doing now that he has in the past.

    Yeah, the plastic surgery and/or Botox have rendered his face unable to move in a natural way. It's very odd looking.

    It wasn't TJS. He had a revision done with an internal brace.

    It would have been man on 2nd with one out if Busch makes the play. Ground out advances him to 3rd, fly out to Happ strands him there. Nobody would have scored without the "hit".

    It's also pre-Covid and in Columbus, not Chicago. I'd bet that second part is easily a 1/4-1/3 cost increase.

    They actually do. There are multiple series where all 3 games are a 1:20 start and nobody else does that. I just did a count for the rest of the season and they play 10 more day games than even the Brewers, who have some additional day games because they play the Cubs, so there is a marked difference. I'm not sure it really has an effect on the team with the way nutrition and training has changed in the last 30 years, but it's something worth considering.

    Surprisingly, most of their underlying numbers weren't far off from their actual numbers last time I looked. It seems like Liberatore has finally turned the corner and he might be an actually good pitcher. The rest of them, between age and regression, I suspect are due for some decline in performance though.

    Skenes came up last year and will be eligible for FA after the 2029 season. Horton, now that I'm doing the math, is likely a FA after the 2031 season, so they would get an extra 2 years of control over Skenes, but even if Wiggins is up sometime next year, he's not a FA until after the 2032 season. For the Pirates, who refuse to spend any money, cheap control is always the end game and Wiggins gets them more of that. They're nowhere near competing right now so longer term assets are probably better for them.

    This was my thinking on why a deal for Skenes involving Horton is unlikely. It gives them one extra year of control over a really good pitcher but does that really do anything for them? Seems like Wiggins would be a more likely candidate for them in a Skenes deal.

    I'm most concerned in the near term with getting someone who can give them 6 innings every 5 days so the pen isn't gassed come July. The recent stretch against subpar teams where the starters (outside of Jamo and Horton last night) have mostly been going 5 IP or less is going to be a problem when they start facing decent teams again.
