  1. I would greatly disagree with this. You find the special player to acquire and then fill in around him because they're so hard to come by.
  2. For me, he wins the best name in the draft prize. He's no Rock Shoulders, but that sounds like a totally made up video game name.
  3. He has tightness in his hamstring. We should all pitch in and get WSR a jump to conclusions mat.
  4. Obviously because he brought the #want.
  5. Are you looking for something along the lines of the only name I recognize is Yeiper Castillo because he's in the Cubs system now?
  6. Resembles Soriano quite a bit there.
  7. Weird because one year they got to the ECF, the next year their superstar tore his acl in the first game and last year we made it to the second round despite injuries to Deng and Hinrich. Not sure where we being tired comes into play. I guess you could make an argument that we could have beaten Miami in the ECF but that's a stretch to say we lost because we were worn out. Or you could say playing so many minutes in a strike shortened season contributed to playoff injuries to Rose and Noah.
  8. He's got a great arm and I wouldn't be surprised to see him sent to Iowa to learn how to throw the cutter we've all been hearing so much about that has apparently helped out Travis wood so much. That and having him throw less different types of pitches. Right now he has a 4 seam, a sinker, a slider, a curve, and a change. I wouldn't be surprised to see that cut down to 3 of those plus a cutter. As smart as the FO is, I have to believe they see something fixable in this guy to bring him in in a trade like this.
  9. Unless he's a free agent apparently. Money is one thing, but giving up prospects for a guy you may only have for 3 months is completely different.
  10. Yeah, I think the lack of household name big stars is really a major part of the problem. You don't have guys like Pujols and Jeter and ARod putting up huge seasons on good teams right now. The downturn in offense along with, as jersey said, the lack of big market teams having good seasons have to be playing a part as well. If guys like Davis and McCutcheon were playing in New York, Boston, Chicago, or LA, you might have a little more buzz.
  11. Waddle and Silvy had somebody on yesterday who was talking about how Thibs and upper management will get together on things, come to some sort of consensus, and then Thibs just goes and does whatever he wants anyway. This included the overuse of players and emphasis on winning regular season games. I can see Gar's point here and what he really did was take away one of Thibs' yes men to hopefully make him a little more accountable on things like playing time for a guy like Noah who clearly needs less time on the floor during the regular season. Made it sound like Thibs is his own worst enemy.
  12. By my math, that leaves them $3,018,150 minus the $800k to Moreno. So, $2,218,150 left for Jiminez. Maybe he signs for less than expected. Or there's more weird slot bonus deals.
  13. He's not making any sense at this point and is just arguing to argue. Apparently just signing two big name IFAs is a solid class for him and we don't need to add anything else, especially that highly thought of guy ranked around #25.
  14. No, because they could have signed without making any of those trades. Do you honestly think that Hoyer is going to acquire all that IFA pool money and not use it? That has nothing to do with what you asked. The extra pool money isn't allowing them to add the elite guys, it's allowing them to add the 2nd tier guys after spending their own money on the elite guys. Not true. The top 3 guys they had targeted would have likely exceeded their pool allowance even with the 5% overage included. Not 100% as it will depend on what the last big bonus turns out to be.
  15. Feldman had consistently good peripherals for a long time. There's a difference between finding value in guys who have been good but superficial numbers make them look bad, vs. finding guys who have been actually bad that you think you can turn into good. Does Arrietta currently throw a cutter?
  16. I don't think it's a stink, it's just deals being made where there's no precedent for the value of what's being traded.
  17. Theo was in the AL East as recently as 2011, while the other two big guys had been in the NL West for a long time. Although I don't think there's any extra familiarity with being in the same division anyway. You don't think there's any extra familiarity with guys on teams you play 17-19 times every year over a team in the other league? That's flat out ridiculous.
  18. I thought that FG article sounded a bit optimistic, but if the IFA money turns out to be as valuable of a commodity as they (FG) seem to think it is then maybe these deals actually are slanted in the Cubs favor. Who the hell knows at this point I guess.
  19. Maybe we're so strapped for cash and poor now that we had to save money in the deal in order to actually pay for all these IFAs we are signing. Ricketts=McCourt basically? With the forethought to at least have a competent FO. No way. The money is getting dumped back into other areas of the franchise and just isn't available for player payroll right now. I'd be dumbfounded if that turned out to be the case.
  20. Maybe we're so strapped for cash and poor now that we had to save money in the deal in order to actually pay for all these IFAs we are signing. That's really about the only thing that makes sense and the $500K saved in the Marmol deal is needed to get all the deals done. Really sucks if that's true, but hopefully if it is the renovations approval will make it all go away.
  21. yep Here's hoping for some Derek Johnson magic with Arrietta at least.
  22. Strop was actually pretty decent last year in 66 IP. 3.69 FIP and 4.00 xFIP. BB and K rates weren't great though.
  23. So, Villanueva back to the rotation for now? And who comes up? One of the lefties at Iowa?
  24. While that may be dumb long term, I'm all for anyone and everyone giving the finger to Bud and his cronies.
  25. What's the highest bonus that doesn't count against that? $50 or $100K? You get six free $50ks and all $10ks and lower are free. Man, that seems low. I would think some lawyer would have a field day with this rule even with the anti trust exemption in place.
