  1. As far as range goes, Murton, Floyd, Soriano, and Jones were all above average at their positions last year: http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/files/dialed_in/discussion/2006_national_league_gold_gloves_as_i_see_it/ Note that those ratings don't include throwing; that's why it's possible for Pierre to be at the top of the list. Wrigley is supposed to be one of the easier parks in the league as far as CF defense, so with Soriano (or whomever) in CF, the defense should be just fine.
  2. What's that an abbreviation for? Sacrifice hits?
  3. No offense, while Bonds was a great player before he alledgely "juiced up", I would take Junior over Bonds everyday of the week, and thrice on Sunday. My biggest problem with Bonds, if they guy had speed (500+ SB, people forget about this stat, because of his "power") why did he settle for LF? While Griffey had a great defensive reputation, Bonds was actually the better defensive player. By FRAA, Bonds played a better CF in 1986 than Griffey ever did in any year of his career. Statheads and scouts tend to agree that Griffey's defense was overrated. Now, Griffey continues to play CF even though doing so hurts his team. That's selfish. Bonds, on the other hand, moved to LF when the very good defensive Andy Van Slyke took over CF. By FRAA, Bonds has been more than 150 runs better than Griffey on defense alone, so it's pretty tough to make the argument that Griffey was a better all-around player.
  4. I agree.
  5. Not necessarily in order: Sizemore Tejada Cordero Liriano Young Sheets Bay Drew
  6. Until Jeff Pearlman goes back in time and tests Griffey's urine, I don't know how he can unilaterally proclaim that Jr. was/is "clean." I personally don't find articles like this one interesting or appealing, but my guess is that fans of Dick Ebersol-type sports coverage do.
  7. Yeah but I'll have another off the waiver wire by the all star break. Not if I have anything to say about it :P But yeah, although saves are my weakness, I have backup closers in Wheeler, Duchscherer, and possibly Wainwright. So hopefully Lidge implodes. Does it make me a bad person to want Trevor Hoffman to tear his rotator cuff? No. You were already a bad person.
  8. But Earl Weaver did that, too, and had a great deal of success. It seems like most "baseball guys" think that you don't need a large sample size to know whether a pitcher is effective against a particular hitter or not. Ideally, it would be nice to make decisions informed by charted batted ball data - not all outs should be weighed equally, of course - but this seems like an area in which a small sample size combined with scouting/video would be sufficient to make good lineup decisions.
  9. Hopefully he looks at hitters' numbers against particular pitchers. That's one of the only things involving stats that Dusty did particularly well. Cliff Floyd should start over Murton against Bronson Arroyo, for example, because Floyd owns Arroyo, but Murton should start against Harang even though Harang is a righty. I'd rather platoon based on matchups than enforce a strict righty/lefty platoon.
  10. The big story about Zambrano at the beginning of last season was that he was going to work on his control and cut down on the walks. And he put up his worst BB/9 yet in 2006. I'd hope that Lou's staff does emphasize throwing strikes, but it might be easier said than done. Not speaking specifically of Zambrano, but it would be unfair to place the blame for all the walks solely on last year's coaching staff. Hendry seems to favor pitchers who are "effectively wild." The Cubs have drafted a lot of guys who can throw 95 mph and a lot of guys who can run fast and hit the ball hard, but most of those guys haven't developed into good pitchers or good hitters. Anyway, while I wish Z didn't walk so many people, he's got great stuff, so he can get away with it. Nolan Ryan had 4 years in a row in which he walked 5 or more batters a game. It's the guys who don't have great stuff that I'm more worried about.
  11. And the Dodgers have since said they weren't going to trade top prospects for Maddux. B prospects or Izturis seems like the choice. Hendry went with the ML ready option, for better or worse. People can complain about Izturis all they want, but at least he's good enough to make the majors, which the vast majority of B prospects won't ever sniff. The other part of that trade was that it pushed Neifi into a backup role (with the trade of Walker, it would have been Neifi and Cedeno as the starters at short and second) which allowed Hendry to trade Neifi a couple of weeks later. It may not have been planned that way, but it is much less likely that Hendry is trading Neifi if Neifi seems like the only option for a starter at the time, so I connect those two deals especially with them being so close in time as well. It pains me to write it, but I'd rather have Neifi than Izturis.
  12. Is this a 32 team league? Standard 12-team Yahoo league. Ausmus went in the middle rounds.
  13. The Fielding Bible had Neifi ranked ahead of Izturis, FWIW.
  14. Nice avatar. I'm a big Cro Cop fan.
  15. ..and somebody took Cesar Izturis. And it wasn't even the last round. Somebody else took Brad Ausmus. I probably won't win the league because my offense won't be so good, but I think I can't do worse than 10th.
  16. Last year I heard they ramped down bleacher ticket sales per game as the bleachers approached sellout, which didn't seem to happen this year. I think they still "ramped down" bleacher tickets this year, but not as aggressively as they did last year. When I tried to buy 6 bleachers for one game, I was only allowed to buy 4. Sorry I couldn't help anyone else on the board. I bought for 3 other people today and had an appointment after that, so I never had a free moment.
  17. It was definitely tougher to get the most-wanted games this year. I didn't get opening day or the Aug 19 game vs the Cards, but I did get all the other games I wanted. I hope everyone else has done well.
  18. I'm going dark for about an hour, but I'll be happy to help folks here get tickets when I'm back. Good luck!
  19. A reminder: If you haven't done so already, go to the cubs website, create an account, and enter your credit card info in the "wallet" part of your account info. It greatly speeds up the purchasing process. I might be willing to help two or three people after I finish buying tickets for myself today, but I'll only help those who already have their payment info saved to their accounts.
  20. Oh crap, this is important info. Can anyone confirm or deny this...cause I'm running firefox.. Works just fine with firefox.
  21. No, the VWR is a lot better than a first-come, first-served model. The big ticket brokers would have all the tickets that way. The large scale operations could automate the ticket buying process and shut out everyone else.
  22. Getting a bat in the lineup to replace Derosa's against righthanders would be nice.
  23. As recently as 2004 you could buy multiple dates in a single phone call, but I believe that you're limited to one game now.
  24. My employer gives birthdays off, and my birthday is always the same week that Cubs tickets go onsale. I should go to sleep now but I'm too excited. Last year I got in early enough and often enough to get bleachers for all 3 White Sox games, opening day, and a few other Cubs/Cards games. Of course, at the time I was hoping Hendry was going to make some moves before the season started. When I realized he was actually going to field that wretched team, I sold all of my tickets and didn't go to a single game. If Karma is real, I'll get shut out tomorrow.
