  1. Seconded - don't we have anyone who can hit a PH HR? Someone who didn't like the Kendall trade would say something like, "We're saving our pinch hitters for the #7 hitter."
  2. He's a career .298 hitter. Judging him on one game is ridiculous.
  3. I haven't been following the game thread until now, but if people are laying that on Kendall, they're being simply ridiculous. short hop on a throw from Soriano. Barrett would have allowed two runs on that play. Neifi would've cut it off and allowed 5. That's still one of the funniest plays I've ever seen.

  5. That was a pretty tough hop w/o moving out of position. Hops aren't easy with a catcher's glove. Once Kendall has caught Marshall a few times, that won't happen.
  6. Pagan does all the little things that don't show up in the boxscore. He's a gamer.
  7. I expect that to go up as the season goes on, but Kendall calls a good game. He'll make a Cy Young out of Z.
  8. I'm glad to see Cubs playing the game the right way. Moving a runner to third = pure National League baseball. The error and run were just gravy.
  9. They like Mark Reynolds and Chad Tracy more than Jackson, so moving Jackson would free up playing time for both.
  10. Wrong as you are about the Kendall trade, I definitely agree with you about this. County Stadium > Miller Park. When Miller Park was being built, I thought it would be wonderful, but out of all the parks I've visited, it's my least favorite. It feels sterile and characterless. It's the United Center of ballparks.
  11. Jesus Christ. Can we stop looking at OPS and OPS+ for two seconds? Is it so hard to admit that (like most players) he's not a power hitter? He hits for average and gets on base at a high rate. Why is this so hard to understand? Because hitting for average and getting on base isn't all that a hitter has to do. He has been average or worse as a player 5 of the last 7 years. So he won't be the perfect player, but he can provide us with a solid OBP - which people have been bemoaning the lack of for a very long time. He can't hit for power, ok he never could. But he can set the table either for Lee, Ramirez, Floyd (or potential big bat) or if he's low in the order he can set the table for Soriano and Theriot/Fontenot. Yes, that .260 OBP is solid - something... Obviously you've never played fantasy baseball. If you had, you'd know that the best way to pick players is to look at the stats they put up in the previous year. Yes, Kendall's OBP is less than average right now, but by the end of the season, he'll be back in the .360 range. A guy with a career .380 OBP doesn't suddenly drop to .260 for a full season.
  12. Me, too. Look at the job the team has done with Marquis. I trust the Cubs with reclamation projects. Hey it worked for the first few months, didn't it? Jason Marquis' ERA is only 9 points higher than Matsuzaka's. And we didn't pay $100 million for him. Our scouts are good.

  14. No one has mentioned that Kendall's CERA is 3.38. He clearly knows how to call a good game, and I can't wait to see how he'll help Jason Marquis, Rich Hill, etc. Now the big question is: who is our backup catcher? Hill hasn't done much with the bat, but his CERA is 2.79, so it's like he's driving in runs with his pitch-calling. Soto's CERA is 4.75, which means the Cubs give up almost 2 runs more when Soto catches than when Hill catches. I don't think his bat can possibly make up for 2 runs every game. Blanco's CERA is 4.04 this year. I don't know if that's good enough to make him the backup.
  15. he's actually got a pair of home runs this year! woo! And if we adjust for park effects (the park in Oakland is spacious), he'd probably be in double digits.
  16. And a lifetime backup until this year. If he's so good, why didn't he have a starting job before?
  17. Blanco's almost ready to bring his big bat back to the Cubs lineup. I'm sure Lou will make good choices and ride the hot hand. If Blanco comes back and hits like he's able to hit, Kendall will sit more often. If Kendall regains his form from 7 years ago, Hank will ride the pine. Blanco is probably better off getting the surgery and coming back next year. He'll do what's best for the team. We'll need Blanco if we face the Padres in the playoffs. His OPS vs. San Diego this year is 1.000.
  18. But none of those options are proven. If we could get a guy like Biggio - maybe a first-year Hall of Famer - there would be no stopping us from making the playoffs. Biggio is a veteran. He's played in the World Series. He won't crack under pressure during the stretch run. Theriot and Fontenot will probably lose control of their bowels if the Cubs are playing meaningful games in September. I like the Kendall move, but we need more proven veterans to catch the Brewers.

  20. +1 I've changed my mind. It's a good thing. What do you guys think it would take to get Craig Biggio from Houston now that Burke is going to get more playing time at 2B? If we could get Biggio, we could have an infield full of all-stars with Kendall, Lee, Biggio, Izturis, and Ramirez.
  21. Yeah, because trading a crappy catcher and a minor league relief pitcher for a guy who has been solid in 11 out of his 12 MLB years is always a bad idea. Kendall hasn't been a top 20 catcher since he left Pittsburgh.
  22. If I'm going to get kicked in the balls, I'd rather not pay somebody $100 for the privilege of kicking me in the balls.
  23. We won't be able to take on additional salary now that we've got JASON KENDALL! Not that we'd need to take on additional salary, because now we've got JASON KENDALL!
