  1. And PECOTA expects Lofton to get about half the atbats that Pierre does and still produce about as much offense. Now that Pierre's a Cub, I hope he does well, and I'll root for him, but we should have done a lot better.
  2. Going from 1st to 3rd can be measured, and there's a lot in the new Bill James handbook, I believe, about baserunning. Taking pitches can be measured as well. Pierre's an upgrade over Corey Patterson of 2005, but just about every CF in baseball would be an upgrade over CPatt of 05.
  3. Why? If it's close and late and Mariano Rivera's on the mound and Neifi Perez is at the plate, maybe you bunt with no one out, but it's generally a bad idea.
  4. Did Hairston's brutal defensive effort against Texas Friday night get any mention this weekend? I thought that I heard somewhere that Hairston will make some phenominal plays but boot routine plays far too often. Does this sound right? According to Baseball Prospectus' fielding metric, Hairston has been a league average second baseman over the course of his career. He's better than average some years and below average other years. I'd guess that it's fair to say that he makes some plays that some with less range can't make bit boots some balls that he should field cleanly.
  5. OK. I hope you can wait until May, since Buehrle's not hitting today. The original lineups listed the pitchers as hitting. Has that changed? Thome and Konerko are both in the Sox lineup today.

  7. So the Cubs had the bases loaded with one out in the 9th but didn't score. Did anyone catch the Len comment after the commerical? Len said, "The Cubs couldn't squeeze out a run." Is that a subtle comment about Dusty's well-known reluctance to call for a squeeze?
  8. Well, it's not like Sing hasn't logged a decent amount of minor-league playing time in the outfield. He's not a good fielder - which is why no one grabbed him in the Rule 5 draft - but he'd be a great choice to platoon with Jones.
  9. Well, I'm not surprised that BP suggested that Jones needs to platoon, but I was surprised they suggested Sing. I know he's not much with the glove, but Sing did do very well in a pitchers' league last year. I'd rather see him in right than Hairston.
  10. I know it's been pointed out before, but with the unbalanced schedule, if Jones doesn't sit vs lefties, the Cubs could be in for some painful numbers from RF. The Reds have three left-handed starters. The Astros have two left-handed starters. The Brewers have two left-handed starters. The Pirates have three left-handed starters. The Cards, thank goodness, only have one lefty starter.
  11. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=4802 I thought of this when Sing wasn't claimed in the rule 5 draft, but, unfortunately, I just don't see this happening.
  12. I was very lucky today. Bleachers for each White Sox game, and bleachers for these Cards games: opening day, 3 games in July, and 2 games in August. I bought my limit, so I'm done for the day.
  13. Thanks! That's helpful. Although, of course, you can still buy tickets for 40 games - if you want to go by yourself. I went to about 25 games last year at Wrigley. Most of the time I went with friends, but several times I went by myself. I met some great people last year at Rockies and Mets games. I've never known anyone to be in the first 400. How long did it take for you to actually buy tickets? Do you remember what time they processed your order? I was in the first 175 2 years ago, but that's when you could buy tickets for up to 40 games. The processing times are way shorter now. At 175 down the list 2 years ago, I was out at around 9:15

  15. Tigers tickets won't be as hard to get as White Sox or Cardinals, but they'll sell out pretty quickly.
  16. Last year, I got in two minutes after the sale started last time and got 6 great seats for the Friday Red Sox game. In all, I got in 13 or 14 times before I reached the 42-ticket limit around 4:00.
  17. Wood and Wade aren't similar pitchers. Wood has much better stuff. His K-rate and WHIP are a notch above Miller's. Willer isn't bad by any stretch of the imagination, but Wood is dominating. Isn't this Miller's first lengthy stint on the DL? Agreed. Wood puts up better K/9 rates, better K/BB rates, and better WHIPs than Miller. That's not a criticism of Miller so much as it is a reminder of how good Wood can be when he's healthy. Miller only pitched 89 innings in 04 and 91 innings in 05. He's had at least two stays on the DL.
  18. PECOTA's #1 comparable to Felix Pie: Corey Patterson. FWIW, I wish Hendry would have traded Corey in May of last year when he could have gotten a very nice return. Since he didn't do so, I wish that we had kept him around. Did we really need Jacque Jones in RF for $15 million over 3 years? At least Corey was hitting near the bottom of the lineup during his last days as a Cub. We can expect Jacques to hit in the 5 spot or (shudder) the 2.
  19. Yup. The Cubs signed Farnsy a few weeks before they traded him last year. Not that I think that the Reds are going to trade Dunn, but the signing doesn't really mean anything one way or the other.
  20. Tickets.com will disable CTRL-N to open new browsers when Cubs tickets go on sale. It won't be impossible to open multiple browser windows, but it will be harder than it was last year. I'm definitely taking the day off. My employer gives us our birthday off anyway, and my birthday is just a few days before the onsale, so I'm going to take my birthday late this year.
  21. They did it the same way last year, but there were plenty of tickets left for every series. I think the box office only got through the first 500 to 1000 (depending on who you ask) before 10:00 last season. I got opening day after buying tickets to four other games.
  22. I got in immediately and got great Red Sox tickets. After that, I got tickets for all three White Sox games, opening day, 3 Cardinals games, Astros, etc. I think I got in 11 or 12 times, and I ended up buying the limit. It took about 6 hours.
  23. Hawpe's doesn't hit LHP very well, so Sosa would be a good choice to platoon in RF. Heck, I'd rather have Sosa platooning in RF with Jacque than see Jacque face Andy Pettite, Mark Mulder, and the good young lefties in Pittsburgh. that's not going to happen Of course it's not. I'm just saying Sosa/Jones > Jones alone.
