  1. Ron Santo (reiterating the advice of Sarge and Cliens): "[Murton] is taking too many pitches...." Just because a guy plays baseball doesn't mean he knows the best way to play - or what works best for a different type of player. Hawk Harrelson is exhibit A.
  2. The same Larussa who thought Juan Encarnacion hitting 2nd was a good idea? His thought is put him in the 2 hole to give him better pitches with Pujols/Edmonds/Rolen and make him better than what he is. Mabry makes Aramis worse. I know that was his thought, and "protection" is an idea accepted by most baseball old-timers, but the evidence suggests that the value of protection to a guy like Encarnacion is greatly exaggerated. There are exceptions or degrees, of course. Would Ramirez see more strikes if Lee were hitting behind him? Probably, but comparing Ramirez to Encarnacion is apples to oranges. No one is ever going to pitch around Encarnacion whether he hits in front of Pujols or Aaron Miles.

  4. Those of you with a BP account should check out this recent article: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=4992 Overly aggressive baserunning leads to fewer runs over the course of a season.
  5. Pierre is seeing more pitches per plate appearance than any Cub except DLee. I was surprised. Cedeno is seeing fewer pitches than even Neifi.
  6. Well, it's called hitting, not walking, dude.
  7. I'm glad that Dusty isn't rushing Murton into the #6 spot. It might kill his confidence if he went 0-4.
  8. Any lineups yet? I just hope Barrett sits. His baserunning killed us last night. He's easily the worst baserunning catcher in baseball. His baserunning alone will probably cost us 10 wins this year.
  9. Barrett is the worst defensive catcher in baseball. We should start Blanco more often.
  10. Speaking of Burnitz, would you rather have Burny for 2006 or Jock until 2008?
  11. You think he'll be ready to hit 6th by 2007? Or would that be rushing him?
  12. Len sounds like he is giving a eulogy instead of calling a game. He is giving a eulogy.
  13. Ultimate Zone Rating is widely regarded as the best defensive metric, but the ratings are no longer made public.
  14. Pass. I don't think Fat Roger has anything left in the tank. Yeah, he was only the best pitcher in baseball last year. Who broke down the last month and a half... He was in the top 30 in innings pitched last year. He pitched just 14 innings less than Maddux and Z. He had the best ERA in baseball - 1.87  . He was #3 in MLB in WHIP. He was top 20 in K/9. PECOTA - which has been pretty good at predicting player collapses in the past - sees him starting 24 games this year and being worth almost 6 additional wins to his team. Is he worth the money he would get? That depends on who's paying him. If it's a playoff contender - the Yankees, the Red Sox, maybe the Cubs - sure he's worth it. If the Royals or the Reds were paying for him, it would be stupid because they're not close enough for him to make a difference. If Clemens in a Cub uniform got Chicago to the World Series, I wouldn't mind if the team spent a ridiculous amount on him.

  16. Because they didnt get two outs? a mere technicality.
  17. You should use your best relievers in your most critical situations. Using Williamson as he was used today was well done by Baker, in my opinion. Good point. In general though, I stay with my idea. of course there's no way to know for sure, but that critical situation probably doesn't come up if baker uses marshall correctly and not scared. Baker gets a bad rap for not playing young guys. When he does play them, he likes to put them in low-pressure situations to protect their fragile egos. Why is Murton batting seventh? Why did Dusty platoon Murton even when he was hitting above .400 last year? Baker is treating Marshall much the same way he treated Mitre in the past. If a young pitcher has a lead, Baker will take him out at the first sign of trouble so that the young pitcher can feel good about his performance (in other words, if the Cubs lose the game, the young player can still feel good about himself). I'm sure Dusty's not the only manager who does this, but I prefer the Bobby Cox method - stick the player where he should be and stick with him even if he struggles initially.
  18. You should use your best relievers in your most critical situations. Using Williamson as he was used today was well done by Baker, in my opinion. Yep. I think the "save" stat and the development of defined "roles" for relievers has caused many managers (Joe Torre, cough) to leave their best relievers in the bullpen when they're most needed.
  19. Joe Randa's speed is killing us in this inning.
  20. This is highly unlikely. Look, my point isn't to dis Cub prospects however Felix Hernandez is more heralded prospect than Prior ever was - he's that amazing. While Felilx is indeed a great prospect, I think you are overstating his case a tad. I haven't seen reports saying he's that much better than what Prior was. A recent BP article pegged Felix as the best pitching prospect in the last 20 years. Yeah, he's more hyped than Prior.
