You should use your best relievers in your most critical situations. Using Williamson as he was used today was well done by Baker, in my opinion. Good point. In general though, I stay with my idea. of course there's no way to know for sure, but that critical situation probably doesn't come up if baker uses marshall correctly and not scared. Baker gets a bad rap for not playing young guys. When he does play them, he likes to put them in low-pressure situations to protect their fragile egos. Why is Murton batting seventh? Why did Dusty platoon Murton even when he was hitting above .400 last year? Baker is treating Marshall much the same way he treated Mitre in the past. If a young pitcher has a lead, Baker will take him out at the first sign of trouble so that the young pitcher can feel good about his performance (in other words, if the Cubs lose the game, the young player can still feel good about himself). I'm sure Dusty's not the only manager who does this, but I prefer the Bobby Cox method - stick the player where he should be and stick with him even if he struggles initially.
