  1. $15 million per year? That is crazy. I think it's even crazier that the Astros would hear that and counter. i don't think the astros have any other choice. besides oswalt and possibly backe, who else is intimidating in that rotation? they need another anchor in that staff and pettite is/was their man to do that. with clemens (again) possibly out of the picture (again), their starting five is extremely weak. it's that or dump the money they would've spent on pettite and clemens the year before on some second-tier starter like meche or lilly. speaking of salaries and the astros...how much do they have available to spend this offseason? we all know the contract given to carlos lee, but with bagwell's contract officially off the books and however much they spent on clemens last year (i doubt he comes back) and also the $16+ million on pettite, what's the cash left over for free agents?
  2. this thread depresses me. i was at game 2...the night before my 21st birthday. and what a present! never seen so many people outside of wrigley field in cubbie blue...and jovial! i've been a cub fan since birth and that is, without question, the greatest feeling i ever felt being a cubs fan. just to see all those people around the chicagoland area and around the US (perhaps the WORLD?!) root for the cubs and cheer them on. game 6 and 7 were slugs to the chest...agon should have played that ground ball cleanly. how ironic is it that our gold-glove caliber shortshop botches it when we needed it the most. again, dusty should shoulder most of the blame because of bad managerial decisions. what could of been... :(
  3. they mention this in geoge f. will's men at work book, as well. the book itself is a good read, although a little dated (1990). he interviews tony larussa, orel hershiser, tony gwynn and cal ripken jr about managing a game, pitching, hitting and defense, respectively. one of the first books that i've read from that time period that's not a bill james-related book that mentions OBP and slugging percentage. a good quote in the book is where either rene lacheman or jim lefebvre, who are larussa's coaches on the a's at the time, talk about runners "clogging the basepaths." it made me think of someone who we all hold dear to our hearts...funny that in one hand, they talk about OBP and SLG percentage in a good light but then bring up a crap theory like that.
  4. anyone notice the flub on the front page of cubs.com where it says that dawson came to the cubs via a trade? seriously...who writes this stuff?!
  5. i always thought that pete rose did the same thing just to break cobb's hit record. his last four seasons were crap, imo. and were pitchers trying to deny him the hit record? if you look at his stats, he has 86 walks in '85. he had not received that many walks since '79 with 95. he was averaging around 40-60 walks between '79 and '86.
  6. i don't get why people hate on this, either. bands think it's cool that you wear their merchandise to shows...hell, it's a great way for them to get revenue, for one.
  7. 3141 hits = HOF in any era. .388 career OBP .338 career BA Is there really any reason he shouldn't get in? let's not forget his EIGHT batting titles, either.
  8. *is a douchebag* with jeff fassero's and neifi perez's number, no less. why did they have to have my favorite number?
  9. thanks for the equation. is there a number for runs created that shows that player X is above/below the league average in that department? like how an OBP of .350 is the benchmark (usually) for a good player who gets on base, for example...is there something like that for runs created? you mentioned situational biases for runs scored and RBI...which is better to compare if player A is more of a run-scoring threat than player B? i was thinking about setting up a lineup and, correct me if i'm wrong, one would think that a player with a high run total (100+) should be near the top of the lineup (preferably batting in the 1 or 2 hole) so that the power hitters in the 3, 4 and 5 hole could drive him in. i hope i make sense. :)
  10. this sounds like a silly question, but what is the difference between runs and runs created? i know a run is where the player himself crosses the plate, but what exactly is runs created?
  11. with all these goofy contracts for subpar players, it feels like the late 90s/early 2000s all over again...unreal contracts for some, miniature american flags for others!
  12. can we put up the bruce miles batsignal and see what his thoughts are on this? i'm sure he might have a small nugget or two of info that we don't know...
  13. we're giving a backup catcher 2.5 million?! can they give us all cash for rooting for this crap?! seriously...wow!
  14. this move is not that good since you overpay a player of his abilities (or lack thereof)...money that could've been diverted to a bigger signing like soriano or zito or one of the top-tier free agents.
  15. i believe he's a platoon player. over the last three seasons, he's played 48 total games at 2B, 34 games at SS and 85 games in RF. hendry isn't the starpest tool in the shed, but i can't see him signing a player to a deal like that and have him play 2B straight out the box when he's only played 48 games in that position over the past three seasons. even if he's platooning with jacque in RF against lefties, that's one hell of an expensive role player.
  16. am i missing something? wells' stats don't really impress me too much. in fact, his career stats almost mirror jacque jones' career stats... wells: .288/.336/.492 jones: .280/.328/.461 granted, jones put up those numbers in roughly two more seasons that wells has, but i really don't see the reason why the cubs should trade for him. do we really want someone like wells in CF that is basically jacque jones with a better arm and (most likely) 3X the salary of jones? we need to upgrade our offense when it comes to CF, but this doesn't seem like a good choice. if someone is able to prove me wrong, i'm all ears. i'm curious to see why others think this is a good choice...
  17. "oh, be nice!"
  18. i think i speak for most when i say we're concerned with whatever hendry decides to pull out of his bag of tricks this offseason. there are some really good free agents available and if the cubs brass holds true to increasing the payroll, there could be some GREAT players acquired to help this team get back into the playoffs and, ultimately, a world series victory. BUT with the past few seasons, instead of signing impact players, hendry has gone for stop-gags like pierre, jones, mabry and wasting money by giving journeymen infielders and pitchers bloated contracts with too many years attached to them. we hope he gets the impact players and not the stop-gags.
  19. the last two seasons, hendry's deals have done more harm than good. it's ok to remember that he traded choi for derrek lee and a bunch of horsecrap for lofton and ramirez, but more recently, the negatives have outweighed the positives by a good margin: * multi-year deals for glendon rusch and neifi perez, who were WAIVED by terrible teams before they were picked off the scrap heap by the cubs. think about that for a minute. * trading three young arms for a one-year rental in juan pierre, who is about as one-dimensional as they get. * practically getting into a bidding war with the ROYALS for the services of jacque jones and signing him to a terrible 3-year deal while they were better options available. * giving freddy bynum, phil nevin, john mabry and a cast of thousands time in left field instead of playing matt murton. * bringing up tony womack to play on a major league roster. * wasting bench space, fabric for a jersey and oxygen in the locker room on jose macias. shall i go on?
  20. the 1993 mets had a $40 million payroll, which 3th or 4th highest in the NL at the time. they lost 59 games are were the laughingstock of baseball. remember the "hardball is back!" title they gave to themselves? yeah. here's a snippet from a wikipedia article to break it down for you: not quite the '06 cubs, but poor planning with a decent payroll has happened before.
  21. i feel you. i turned the game off with 6 minutes left in the 4th quarter after the cardinals apparantly ran back an interception for a touchdown, which made it 29-10. i wake up, see an email in my inbox telling me HOW DID THE BEARS PULL IT OUT OF THEIR BUTT (butt was not used, btw) and proceeded to give myself the bitter beer face and ran to espn.com to check the scores. i felt like crying...did the 2001 bears regular season not teach me a thing?! as god as my witness...never again will i turn off a bears game early. NEVER!
  22. i hope Piniella brings us a championship. with that said, hendry now can get back to working out aram's extension. hopefully aramis likes Piniella. i really don't want to see him with another team next season.
  23. Tickets are not sold based on managerial hires. At the risk of sounding snooty, I'll say the average ticketbuyer is somewhat less sophisticated than the average NSBB poster. in defense of the average ticketbuyer, how many people do you know of that buy tickets to ANY sporting event just to see the manager/coach? i can't think of anyone i know, sports nut or otherwise.
  24. "then i went inside to make my withdrawal i saw what he had had, but i had to take it all..."
