WTF does "consistent lineups" have to do with anything. He was given a god awful roster. It sucks. The Cubs have lost a lot because they have a horrible roster. First of all, he was the guy saying he believed it was important to have a consistent line-up so that batters could get accustomed to it and the whole line-up could develop a rhythm. How much stock you put into this theory is up to you, but I do see that logic. Castro has stunk but he also has bounced all over the place, with different approaches in each spot. Again, the W/L record isn't the issue. It's his day to day management. EDIT: The roster does indeed suck, but things like making stupid mental mistakes and playing a decent brand of baseball can be developed.

Because spending money on a competent manager would be madness. If competency is the standard we judge on, then I think Sveum qualifies. I think we might be a year early on the real debate over Sveum's time here, but I also don't see anything in particular that would be hard to replace. He'll probably be measured against Rizzo and Castro's career path and just given the axe if they don't pan out. Yep. Agreed on that. I just maintain that at some point everyone in the organization has to be held accountable, and Dale's mistakes make his situation a no-brainer IMO. He harped on a few points when he was hired like putting out consistent line-ups, playing sound baseball and not beating yourselves, none of which have come to pass. His calling card was being a great hitting coach and our young core has regressed offensively (sans Wellington). I just don't see why we should wait, but you are probably right.

Actually, I'd rather have Valbuena or Castro there. Barney is a known commodity, and it's known that he's not that great at baseball. The next good Cubs baseball team will not have him batting anywhere above 7th, and maybe not on this team anywhere. The other guys? Quite possibly.

I am coming dangerously close to making some meatball comment about "creating a culture of winning", but I will back off that. My real question is whether we have a competent coach who won't have us screaming at the television when he pulls this BS during a meaningful game in 2014 and beyond. If he isn't who we need there, when do we make that switch? After we start winning a few games? If we are a surprising young team who sneaks into a WC spot? This isn't Mike Olt, who still is worth seeing if he develops. If Sveum isn't the guy, make a change. I hear what you're saying, but I don't want wackadoo [expletive]. I want a manager who builds confidence in his bullpen, allows his starters to pitch through tough innings and doesn't bat Darwin Barney 2nd in the lineup.

Given what Sveum has had to work with I think you can throw the W/L record out the window. That doesn't excuse him from some absolutely boneheaded decisions he has made regarding the daily line-up, the regression of some hitters or handling of the bullpen. I like what's going on organizationally, and for that Hoyer/Epstein are given a pass, for now. Sveum's job is to manage the big league club. At what point do you make a change? When we decide that we're good enough for mistakes to matter? I made a minor joke about the Cubs Way, but seriously, that really should include some accountability. Sveum continually making dumbass decisions shows everyone, including players, that we're not serious about much of anything yet.

David Price has pitched over 5 MLB seasons, played in 4 playoff series, is a 3 time All Star and he won the Cy Young. Evan Longoria has played 6 MLB seasons, appeared in 5 playoff series, was ROY in 2008, is a 3 time All Star and he has 2 gold gloves. They are also in the playoffs right now. I wouldn't want to play them if I were Boston.

Absolutely. He's been away from sports for so many years (as sports journalism has simultaneously gotten terrible) that you forget just how good he is. He does a great interview, he's funny and his sports highlight segments puts all the ESPN hacks to shame. Great show.

Semantics I guess. An ugly win that is still big in the grand scheme of things. Between Schiano and his cheap-shot team, Carolina with Cam and Atlanta being Atlanta I really do despise everyone in our division. Any win there is huge for me.

That win was anything but great. The Saints will be 1 of 3 teams in the NFC who are 2-0, with both wins against division opponents. Ugly, ugly win on the road in shitty conditions where there was an hour weather delay. Yes, it is a great win.

Yes, Schiano is that bad. Only 10 men on the field on defense, and just now they had a 70 yard TD bomb called back for illegal formation again. Never seen anything like it.

The Buccaneers are the worst coached team I can remember watching. Blatant helmet to helmet and late hits, illegal formations, delay of game coming out of a timeout, a wasted challenge on an obvious play, etc. Former TB Buc John Lynch is railing on Schiano the whole game. As I type this, Schiano is screaming at the ref for allowing Jimmy Graham to remain in the game after he was slow to get up after a blatant personal foul. The problem with that is, Graham can stay in the game if he is injured as a result of a personal foul. It's almost embarrassing at this point, except for the fact that TB is going to put someone out with a concussion if this keeps up. EDIT: The Bucs just held the Saints on 3rd down at the 2 yard line and forced a field goal, but on the FG attempt they jumped offsides. First down Saints at the 1.
