  1. With yesterday's win, the Cubs actually succeeded in playing at least .500 ball against everyone in the division this year. 11-5 against St. Louis 9-6 against Milwaukee 8-7 against Houston 8-7 against Pittsburgh 8-7 against Cincinnati
  2. The only thing today did was eliminate the possibility of the Cubs playing the Padres in the NLDS.
  3. This is it for Harang this year. There will be no next start.
  4. Marshall vs. Marquis for that final spot on the postseason roster? *fingers crossed* (Hart also on the roster...)
  5. I'd rather see Hill than either of them. Well, yes, the 3 starters would be Zambrano, Lilly, Hill. Thus...Marshall in the pen.
  6. I may be alone in this, but if the Cubs are going with just 3 starters in the NLDS, I'd like to see Marshall instead of Marquis in the pen ready to come in at a moment's notice.
  7. The Cubs are 15-5 against the NLC in September. That, if nothing else, propelled them to the division title (considering they're 1-6 in September against other divisions)
  8. Well, now that it's a sure thing... I think these players are "locks" to be on the playoff roster as long as nobody gets injured between now and Wednesday: Rotation: Zambrano, Lilly, Hill, Marquis (not that I like it, but Marquis is in the rotation) Relievers: Dempster, Howry, Marmol, Eyre, Wood, Wuertz Position Players: Ramirez, Lee, Soriano, DeRosa, Theriot, Jones, Floyd, Kendall, Ward That makes 20. As far as I see it, there are 5 spots up for grabs among the following players: Soto, Blanco, Murton, Munroe, Pie, Marshall, Hart, Fontenot, Cedeno, Ohman. They WILL have a second catcher, and Lou would likely want a long reliever available in case one of the starters runs into trouble immediately. That leaves space for a backup middle infielder and 2 backup OFs. If it were up to me, I'd use Soto, Hart, Cedeno, Murton and Pie. Not sure if that's what Lou will do.
  9. The most unlikely playoff scenario: Mets win 2 Phillies win 1 Padres lose 2 Rockies win 2 All finish with identical 89-73 records. Monday playoff: Mets defeat Phillies Tuesday-Wednesday playoffs: Phillies defeat Padres and Rockies. Cubs head to New York for a game on Thursday.
  10. Go Brewers!
  11. So now we can root for the Brewers on Saturday and Sunday to keep the NL wildcard picture crazy. Go go 4-way tie between the Mets, Phillies, Padres and Rockies! :)
  12. The only scenario that has the Cubs playing in New York: Mets win twice. Padres lose twice. Phillies lose once. If the Rockies lose once: Mets win one-game playoff Monday vs. Philly. Phillies win one-game playoff Tuesday vs. San Diego. If the Rockies win out too (this is the crazy scenario): Mets win one-game playoff Monday vs. Philly. Phillies win two-day playoff Tuesday/Wednesday against San Diego and Colorado. I'm personally rooting for that last scenario. 4-way tie, Cubs get to face a worn-out team on Thursday.
  13. Well, that cleared up nicely today. Here are the current scenarios through Friday: Cubs are in as the NL Central representative. They will be on the road come Wednesday either in New York, Philadelphia, Arizona, or San Diego. Arizona is also in the playoffs, at least as a Wild Card, thanks to their win and the Mets loss. Possible scenarios for Saturday: NL West: If the Diamondbacks win, they win the NL West and eliminate Colorado. If the Padres win, they clinch a playoff spot and eliminate Colorado. If both happen, the Cubs will be in Arizona on Wednesday. NL East: If the Phillies win and the Mets lose, the Phillies are the NL East champs, and the Mets are eliminated. Colorado is basically relegated to needing a prayer to make the playoffs, after railing off 11 wins in a row, just from one loss.
  14. Well, the playoff picture cleared itself up nicely today. Arizona is in due to their win today. Cubs are in, and will be on the road in Game 1. Padres are at worst playing an extra game Monday.
  15. Oh well, looks like he'll be limited to PH duty.
  16. I don't remember the Cubs winning 83 games last year. At best they'll have a 21 game improvement.
  17. If the Cubs lose tonight this is a big mistake. It's a mistake either way. They really can't afford to be banking on the playoffs, they need to throw the big guns out to get there Zambrano would be pitching on normal rest on Friday. Hill would get 2 extra days of rest in this scenario. I guess the Cubs just need to go out there and win tonight, then.
  18. Hopefully Trachsel on Thursday will turn out to be similar to Estes in Cincy that last Thursday in 2003.
  19. I wouldn't say the Cards have been tanking it. They just have a tendency to get blown out in losses, thus the Pythagorean record for them. Well, except against the Cubs last week, who didn't play well but managed 3 wins anyway.
  20. New sod is usually a bit of a problem. But there are 10 days before any potential game on that field, it should be in good shape by then. Football teams sometimes resod midweek, and there's a lot more starting and stopping in that sport. Odds are you'll see some clumps come up here and there, and it will be noticeable for the TV cameras, but given the time frame, a quality grounds crew should be able to make it playable and relatively safe. 5 days if there were a 1-game playoff. Not saying there will be, but...
  21. I would certainly hate this to turn into a situation similar to "well at least we have Prior and Wood for Games 6 and 7".
  22. Or...you know...the playoffs.
  23. Is it wrong to still be holding out hope that the Cubs finish with the best record in the NL? :)
