  1. Weird Illini stat of the day: 7'1" Mike Tisdale is currently shooting 83% on the year from 3-point range.
  2. Did you have Villanova? I only got 7/16 and have 4 of my Elite 8 (lost Kansas, BYU, Georgetown and Wisconsin) teams still alive. The worst I can remember doing in years. Fortunately most people in my pools had Kansas winning it all so if I can ride Duke to the finals and get WVU and Syracuse to the Final 4 I may have a shot. Go Tennesee, Cornell and Xavier. I missed on Kansas, Wisconsin and Butler (I had UTEP). I still think Wisconsin is better than they showed this weekend (heck, Kansas too for that matter). Oh, so you had Wisconsin in the final. Yeah, in hindsight, my sleeper champ game pick didn't work so well. Coupled with the other "safe" pick, my bracket is at the same time leading my pool and out both championship teams.
  3. Now back to the second-tier tournament. Thankfully we have this thread so it won't get confusing in the other thread. ;) Cincy-Dayton should be a good one. Illinois is the heaviest favorite tomorrow. Kent State is somewhere between Northwestern and Penn State in quality. Illinois beat Northwestern in OT and beat PSU by 1 at home, so I expect the result tomorrow to be somewhere in between. ;)

  5. 11 conferences in the Sweet 16: Ivy (Cornell), Missouri Valley (Northern Iowa), WCC (St. Mary's), Atlantic 10 (Xavier), Pac-10 (Washington), Horizon (Butler), ACC (Duke), SEC (Kentucky/Tennessee), Big East (Syracuse/West Virginia), Big 12 (Kansas State/Baylor) and Big Ten (Ohio State/Michigan State/Purdue)
  6. I got 13 of 16 Sweet 16 picks right, but I have neither of my championship game teams left.
  7. There is a halfway decent chance the Big Ten gets a Final Four team.
  8. I say it every year and it never changes. I will never understand it. Too early on the west coast. So then the game you pick to go early features one of the only two west coast teams playing today.
  9. I think it's possible to do results, but predictor work is tricky.
  10. More information I already knew. Look, this performance blows. I've said it before, I'll say it again even if Cuse, Pitt and WVU all make the Elite Eight and even if Cuse and WVU make the title game. That doesn't invalidate an entire season's worth of data that made pretty clear that the top 3 leagues in America were the Big 12 first, and then the ACC and Big East 2nd and 3rd in some order. Unless you're a moron. I didn't do this to rub in the Big East thing, I was just doing it to do it. I was curious how many leagues have over-underperformed (it's a zero-sum game, as the default is everyone performing exactly to expectations). All the same, a 9 beating an 8 shouldn't be worth as much weight as, say, a 14 beating a 3 or a 13 beating a 4, so a better weighting system would provide a better result. Maybe I'll do something like that if I get really curious.
  11. Conference performance relative to seed, thus far (using simple higher seed wins expectations): Pac 10 (8, 11); Expected wins: 1; actual wins: 3 (+2) WCC (8, 10); Expected wins: 1; actual wins: 3 (+2) MVC (9); Expected wins: 0; actual wins: 2 (+2) ACC (1, 4, 7, 9, 9, 10); Expected wins: 3; actual wins: 4 (+1) Horizon (5); Expected wins: 1; actual wins: 2 (+1) Ivy League (12); Expected wins: 0; actual wins: 1 (+1) OVC (13); Expected wins: 0; actual wins: 1 (+1) CAA (11); Expected wins: 0; actual wins: 1 (+1) MAC (14); Expected wins: 0; actual wins: 1 (+1) Big Ten (2, 4, 4, 5, 11); Expected wins: 4; actual wins: 4 (0) SEC (1, 4, 6, 10); Expected wins: 5; actual wins: 4 (-1) Big 12 (1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 10); Expected wins: 9; actual wins: 7 (-2) Mountain West (3, 7, 8, 11); Expected wins: 4; actual wins: 2 (-2) Atlantic 10 (5, 6, 7); Expected wins: 3; actual wins: 1 (-2) Big East (1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 6, 6, 9); Expected wins: 8; actual wins: 3 (-5)
  12. Well, Ohio State's run to the Fina Four looks a bit more manageable than it did 3 days ago.
  13. Now he's out 6-8 weeks with a back strain. It's just one thing after another with this guy. I just mostly feel bad for him, as he was one of my favorite Cubs.
  14. On a related note, Pomeroy is pretty feisty on Twitter this tournament.
  15. Right. No matter what happens next year, we should definitely limit the Big East to five teams, based on this tiny sample of games. :D Big east was way overrated this year, Andy. The Big 12 and the Big East, by any metric, were the two best leagues in the country this year. RPI, Pomeroy, teams in the tourney, whatever measure you use. This performance is absolutely pathetic. Edit: Those two facts ARE mutually exclusive. Excuse my lack of English skills. According to Pomeroy, the ACC and Big 12 were the two best leagues in the country this year.
  16. UNC wins by 2 anyway, so it didn't end up mattering in the long run. So far, Ole Miss and UNC are the final eight teams, six games left to play (2 today, 4 Monday).
  17. Never thought I'd say this, but that was an awful homer call against North Carolina.
  18. The current leader in my bracket pool has 30 of 32 correct, and all Sweet 16 teams left. EDIT: Of course, Butler and Tennessee were his only non-chalk S16 picks, so who knows what'll happen this weekend.
  19. CBS's worst decision of the tournament so far: wasting Gus Johnson on the Syracuse/WVU pod. Was there a pod with less intrigue? Quick, send him to San Jose or Spokane for the rest of the weekend.
  20. Yes, the Pac-10 was still terrible. Cal and Washington were decent, but everybody else was bad.
  21. Sh. Shut up. The game is over. Cal's basically already in the 2nd round. Pitino may as well head home. Considering people already had the Duke-Louisville game penciled in on Wednesday, I think it's fine for people to point out Cal had a chance.
  22. Louisville being worse than Cal is not a stretch of the imagination. Louisville beat Syracuse twice and wasn't a tournament team the remainder of the year.
  23. Aggies all over the Aggies in the first half.
  24. In fairness, I think Temple was still underseeded, and Cornell could have beaten anyone the way they were shooting today. Dayton was probably better than Richmond but were the 3rd unluckiest team in division 1.
  25. Morgan State's coach is Todd Bozeman, former Cal coach who was forced to resign after it was revealed he gave the parents of a player $30,000 so they could travel to watch their son play. The parents ratted him out two years later after their son's playing time dwindled and transferred him to Pepperdine.
