  1. I changed my mind. Wood's biggest mistake that inning was that he was leaving his fastball up, which may have been a product of not pitching for three weeks.
  2. Curious, what would qualify as a doom and gloom person right now? Watching wood walk the leadoff hitter and give up 2 runs in the 8th is going to bring out a few negative thoughts in anybody. He got the leadoff hitter out on one pitch, actually. The only real mistake was just not putting Kemp on with first base open.
  3. Really, we're going to cite Wood's ERA to this point after pitching three innings?
  4. Or maybe this Matt Kemp guy is just pretty good right now and you have to just accept he'll get his at some point in the game.
  5. Somebody's getting squeezed, and for once it's not a Cub pitcher.
  6. Elbert has thrown 21 pitches to three batters and got none of them out yet (Campana was caught stealing, though). EDIT: Which prompts a pitching change already. Looks like it's time for a cup of Coffey.
  7. Campana doubles his walk total for the season today.
  8. He got hit with a batted ball in the sixth and was struggling a bit afterwards.
  9. With both Dodger LH hitters coming up this inning and Russell not having pitched in a week, this is a good place to use him.
  10. I know I was looking forward to the Jerry Hairston/Joe Mather HR contest today.
  11. Soriano...walked? I'm expecting a seeing eye single from Stewart here in bizarro inning.
  12. Doesn't Billingsley have some crazy home/road splits for his career?
  13. Tony coaxes his third walk of the year. That can only help the walk rate.
  14. You want him to sacrifice the guy over for the pitcher to drive him in? Umm, no. I would like Geo to go opposite field in that situation and at least try and get him over. It opens up the squeeze possibility at the very least. So you wanted him to sacrifice the guy over for the pitcher to drive him in. Did I say bunt? Because purposely being out to move a runner over is totally different between bunting and full swinging.

  16. KEMP. LAHAIR. WHO SHALL EMERGE VICTORIOUS?!
  17. I'd like to note that I did actually predict LaHair would be the best hitter on the Cubs at about an .850 OPS, at a "poor man's Dunn" level. Before last year, the reason LaHair wasn't a real prospect was that he had the bad K rate but not the power to make up for it. It remains to be seen whether he can maintain some semblance of his crazy HR/FB rate (not Kemp crazy, but still miles better than the league), but he has some value in an all-or-nothing masher, especially when the Cubs aren't really counting on it for long term production.
  18. You think Sveum would put Russell as closer when he hasn't let him pitch in a week? The Cubs just haven't been in a situation where they needed outs against good lefty hitters...
  19. A little surprised Wood wasn't on the short list.
  20. With Youkilis, Longoria, Zimmerman and Sandoval on the shelf, the pickings are really slim at 3rd now.
