  1. Weren't you also a Ramon Vasquez fan too? :D
  2. I don't know much about Martinez, but I'm not a big fan of any of those guys outside of Maybin, Upton, and McCutcheon. Young is a year and a half older than Felix, and while he has shown a pretty good batting eye and more power, he will strike out a bunch and won't have much of an average to show for it. He seems to me to be a RH version of Steve Finley, without the big years around age 36-38. The only thing Kemp has shown more than Felix is power, which makes sense for someone 2 inches and about 30-40lbs larger. High A- Pie .301, .364, .448; 415 ABs, 39 BB, 113 K Kemp .306, .349, .554; 418 ABs, 25 BB, 92 K Much more power shown by Kemp, but keep in mind he was 20 in low A, while Pie was 19. Both are young for the league, but Felix was more raw and somewhat made up the power difference with BB ratio. AA- Pie .304, .349, .554; 240 ABs, 16 BB, 53 K Kemp .327, .399, .528; 199 ABs, 20 BB, 38 K Pretty decent advantage for Kemp there, but Pie showed he can possibly keep up with him in power in the long-run. Kemp made a splash in the majors for a while, but had 8 BBs to 41 Ks in 122 ABs, showing he's still a free swinger. While I can't completely disagree with the rankings, I think Felix could easily be the 3rd best ML'er on that list. Maybin looks like the real deal, but the other young guys are so raw and a long way away.
  3. My waiver list: Eric Chavez Juan Rivera Derek Lowe Mark Derosa
  4. I was thinking of this myself. I would definitely sign Jason Schmidt, and if Prior looks to be ready to go to start the season for a change, I would go with 2 young guys in the rotation. But for next year, I think Hill and Marshall have the most value for the ML Cubs if they want to win. Marshall has the most ML experience of all of them, and hopefully, by the end of the year will have 20-25 starts. Hill is the oldest of the group and the most ready, IMO, to pitch to his full capability next year. As for trade value, I think Marshall has the most at this point, due to his ML experience and the fact he's a lefty (and the youngest of the group, IIRC don't feel like looking it up). Guzman probably has the least, despite being the most talented, because of injury. Marmol v. Hill just depends on what another team wants. Young hard-throwing RH or mature LH. Long-term, I would rank them: Marshall, Guzman, Marmol, Hill. All have more upside than Hill. All are younger. I put Marshall 1st because he's most likely at this point to reach his ceiling of the top 3 upsides. Perfect scenario: 2007 rotation- Cubs sign Schmidt. Prior is healthy. Zambrano is Zambrano. Then the Cubs can choose to sign Meche for #4 or go with 2 kids for the 4-5. I would look to trade Hill and Mateo, and 1 of Gallagher/Marmol for a big bat. That works better with Meche, as the 5th spot can go to Marshall with Guzman, Gallagher/Marmol, and Veal waiting in the wings.
  5. its almost as likely as the red sox coming back to beat the yankees in 2004 no im not comparing the cubs to them , im saying no one thought they were going to come back and win it all with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th, 3 games down and rivera on the hill They had to beat 1 team, not beat 1 and have 10 others lose. But yeah, I went to bed thinking the Yanks had won the series in a sweep.
  6. I've never been to an actual night game at Wrigley. I've gone to games where it has gotten dark by the end.
  7. I don't understand how Rich Hill gets punished for bad control last year. Angel Guzman gets punished for bad control in a couple starts in the majors, without a history of control problems before. But Marmol, who has had worse control than either of the 2 on the ML level, gets a pass for being young. And if a 97 and 98 mph fastball with great movement, isn't a 2.0, I don't know what is.
  8. Wow, Mateo ahead of Veal? :D Ah yes, Petrick is in the same boat as Guzman. If he's healthy he's got better potential than anyone in the system, with the arguable exception of Guzman.
  9. Don't know how you decide if a player is still a prospect, but Marmol has now gone over the IP and service time for a rookie. Hill is close behind. Didn't realize. Shows how much I've paid attention this year.
  10. Tim, I'll definitely have 8 pitchers in my top 10, possibly 9, though I think Patterson will slide in and Colvin likely just out.
  11. Does that change at all given that he hasn't been on the DL at all this year? If he completes this season healthy, I think he could easily take his place again as the top arm in the system. I completely agree. I was having a conversation with Outshined about how long it'd take before you'd say Guzman was the top minor league pitcher again. I think a healthy season puts a lot to rest (not all, of course, but definitely enough for me). In terms of potential amongst those listed in the first post, I'd say Marmol-Hill-Marshall (Gooz definitely first). Most likely to reach it: Hill, Marshall, Marmol, Guzman. This past spring. I still agree with your top 2. :) I haven't thought much about next year's rankings (until just now), but I can assure you that Veal is moving WAAAYYYYY up my list. :D Just started thinking about mine. Don't really know what to do with the guys in the majors if they qualify. Marmol has always been a personal favorite of mine. Mateo has to climb up the list big time. Pawelek still has amazing upside. Then you have Veal and Gallagher who are neck and neck for Cubs minor league pitcher of the year.
  12. OUCH! Had to figure something was wrong the way he got beat up yesterday, after missing his last start. Even as a fan of the team that has gotten very little from comparable talent the last 2 years, I don't wish this on one of the great young pitchers of the game.
  13. Does that change at all given that he hasn't been on the DL at all this year? If he completes this season healthy, I think he could easily take his place again as the top arm in the system.
  14. He reminds me of Juan Cruz. Didn't really have control problems in the minors because he got a lot of swings and misses on his nasty slider. Marmol is the same way. His movement often puts him out of the zone. Professional hitters will lay off a lot of those pitches. It may get better, but only if he works on it. All signs point to Marmol doing just that, though.
  15. Of course he is! Who do you think is putting them in position to succeed?
  16. That works too. I guess it all depends on your taste. Guzman = Pedro Marshall = Zito Veal = Dontrelle Gallagher = Carpenter/ Lackey Petrick= Webb Don't really know who to compare Marmol and Hill too.
  17. Marshall has the most upside. Marmol has the best stuff. Hill has the best chance of reaching his upside. I'd rank them Marshall, Marmol, Hill in terms of prospect status and upside.
  18. Before tonight's game, Felix Pie was 35-102 since the AS break. Take out the 4 games right after the break (3-5, 0-4, 3-5, 0-8) and Lix is hitting .363/.414/.550 in his last 21 games.
  19. Plenty of teams put prospects in relief to start their ML career, but nobody puts them there and lets them sit for 2 weeks like the Cubs. Like Goony said, I would have no problem if they did it right. As an aside, the Cubs pitching looks to be in pretty decent shape. Marshall, Marmol, Hill, Guzman, Mateo, and Ryu have all shown flashes that they can be ML pitchers. With guys like Gallagher and Veal probably able to pitch in the majors mid-07, the Cubs can sign a front of the rotation starter, put 2 kids in the rotation, and trade a couple more while still having guys waiting in the wings. Really no excuse for Hendry not to get a big bat in a trade this offseason if FA prices are too high.
  20. You hear this about players, usually, but I think Girardi has upside as a manager. I think he knows enough about the game to be effective. I don't know if he's the best choice for a non-rebuilding team, because I think it's hard to ask him to compete with anything less than a great team due to his lack of experience. He does seem to be more of a small-ball guy than I like, but I don't see any problem with his handling of pitchers so far. BTW, I thought Girardi's out clause was if the Yankees job became available.
  21. Holy crap my HS kids know to do this. Sometimes it just amazes me how little these guys know about their craft. Not surprising to me. Some people just have natural ability and can be very successful while knowing very little about their craft. I think Vlad Guerrero may be the best at this.
  22. Yeah, they both look like they can win as many as 19 games in a year. Hahaha. Touche. It just sucks that our two really good RB are injured now.... I still think Adrian Peterson could be a stud in this league, given the opportunity. We definitely need Benson/Jones, but AP could definitely step in and be a solid back. It's a lot better than having them injured a month or 2 from now. The offense hasn't changed, for the first time in a while, so it's not that big of a deal that the 2 RBs are hurt in preseason. I do worry about both long-term though. Benson has had 2 injuries now and has only played a handful of actual games. Jones has never been a picture of durability. Oh yeah, and AP cannot be stud. I think he could be a solid #2, getting 10 or so carries a game, but I wouldn't want him for 20-25 touches.
  23. No, the Cubs can't afford to have Izturis and Jones on the team, dragging down the offense. Murton and Cedeno are from the Cubs system (well, Murton was a trade, but you know what I mean). The Cubs should be able to break their own in as everyday players. The Cubs consciously went out and paid money to bring Jones in and traded away something to get Izturis. It's those 2 that should go, especially considering the salaries they make.
  24. Is it me or has Guzman's control been better as the season has gone on? As good as Veal, Gallagher, Marshall, Marmol, and Mateo have looked at times, if Guzman ever gets completely healthy, he's easily a notch above them all. I won't get my hopes up til I see it though.
