  1. IU with a big 83-46 final exhibition win. DJ White had 17 points, while attempting 3 FGs (3-3). Got to the line 14 times, knocking down 11, but he did have 6 TOs. JC transfer, Lance Stemler, looks like he's gonna be a huge addition. 16 points off the bench, after 12 the previous tune up. He is 10-15 from the field in the 2 games, including 7-11 behind the arc. Freshman Armon Bassett, with his 2nd amazing ball-handling game. Followed up an opening 16 pt, 6 assist/2 TO game with no points last night, but 10 assists with just 2 TOs. Wilmont was again strong, and may lead the team in scoring this year. We start for real on Monday in the NIT vs. Lafayette!
  2. WOW! Every single one of them (except Soriano) is under 28. Everyone but Beltran and Soriano were homegrown by their teams. This just in. The best way to win is to put a lot of money and effort into scouting and player development!
  3. Sanchez is one of the top 5 pitching prospects in all of baseball. They could have gotten Miguel Cabrera for a package with Sanchez as the headliner. WOW. Amazing steal by the Yanks.
  4. I think they would also need to pick up one of the many 2b options available this offseason also. The list is long at that spot: Soriano Kent Durham Giles Loretta Lugo Walker Iwamura Kent is not a FA. I believe he had an option or something picked up by the Dodgers last year. I want Durham, but I'd settle for Theriot if it meant the Cubs got Drew, re-signed Ramirez, and still addressed pitching accordingly.
  5. How did my post get so late?
  6. I hate kickers.
  7. Huge 3rd down conversion as Gainesville watches intently.
  8. 38 assists on 45 baskets. That's a good way to shoot 57% from the floor. Bad defense is too, I guess.
  9. Seriously? By my count, the Giants are going to be missing 5 defensive starters (Osi, Strahan, Arrington, Madison, Short). Also backups Tuck and Emmons are questionable. I don't understand how they could be so confident with so many injuries. They don't have good depth. ... Actually, the Giants have pretty darn good depth ... good enough to hold two teams to 10 or less points with alot of starters out the last two weeks ... Have you watched the Giants at all? The Giants do have good depth. Of course, that all goes out the window when your "depth" is forced into the first string.
  10. Miller I was 50/50 on. I kinda agree with TT that he's not a much better option (if at all) than Marshall and others. To me, it doesn't change much. The Cubs still need to get 2 arms, one top of the rotation quality. Seems to me just a name to be added to the list of potential 5 starters. Miller, Marshall, Mateo, Marmol, Prior, Ryu, and Guzman. I think it's pretty safe to assume that not 1 of these guys will make it thru an entire season as the Cubs #5. That's about $10M (assuming Miller gets about 2-3M) spent on a 5 starter combo. Along with a potentially $20M bullpen if they re-sign Wood and that's a lot of money spent on what is likely the least important parts of the team. I probably would have taken my chances with the kids and Prior at the #5. And I probably would NOT re-sign Wood to pitch in the pen, and spend the extra money elsewhere.
  11. exactly. hendry couldn't have lucked out any more than this. exactly the type of player the cubs need, and he's there for the taking. he could put up huge numbers playing in the NL central, by the way. I'd love to see what a legit LH hitter could do full-time in Wrigley. It hasn't been proven by the great Cub LH sluggers of the past like Jones, Burnitz, Henry Rodriguez, and 50-year old McGriff (though Jones and HRod had career power years here)....but I feel a LH hitter with power can excel in Chicago. It's no coincedence guys like Dunn, B. Giles and other LH sluggers fare well in Wrigley.
  12. I'm not sure I wouldn't rather keep Jacque (never thought I'd say that) and put Drew in CF... (with the rest of your moves in mind) Murton Giles Lee Ramirez Drew Barrett Jones Izturis Looks better to me... Small issue, but I don't know why Drew would be BEHIND the big RBI guys. He's a career .393 OBP guy. Lee has only been that good at getting on base, once....and that was his awesome 2005. Drew's my #3 hitter. I could understand 4th to break up the RHs and have Lee 3rd, since he would still likely be the team's best hitter. But yeah, Drew in CF would be great.
  13. Agreed, but the overall scheme is only slightly better, IMO, than the old ugly unis BLASPHEMERS! Nothing can possibly ever beat the Brewers MB glove.
  14. Nobody is expecting Perry to make this team the A's or Red Sox. His biggest selling point is just simply the mindset he brings. Right off the bat (no pun intended), we heard the Cubs hitting "gurus" talk about them being more aggressive, not walking across the plate, and clutch hitting. The fact that all signs point to him believing all those things are as silly as I do, is all I need to know about him.
  15. Cancel out Chacon, Pavano, and Wright. Especially Chacon, because he's in Pittsburgh! :D
  16. Pass rush both ways will be the key. Both teams have QBs that don't perform well with a rush in his face. Both teams have their #2-3 WRs with very little experience, which could lead to route running mistakes in blitz situations. The Giants haven't brought much blitz wise, relying on their D-line to provide much of the pass rush. They have 5 sacks from outside their D-line, and 3 of those are from Short and Arrington who could both be out. So, one would guess in order to provide pressure against the Bears, the Giants would have to bring some help. The Giants are already reluctant with a weak defensive backfield. Take Sam Madison out and that's a lot of RW McQuarters 1-on-1, which is a win for the Bears. The Bears on the other hand have solid matchups across the board. The Bears D-line is better than the NY O-line. I like Urlacher or Briggs vs. Shockey. I like Vasher against whoever the Giants start at WR. I don't think Tillman vs. Plax is that bad either, considering Peanut plays bigger WRs better.
  17. I like the move. Under the radar, but a solid hitting coach from all accounts. I like that he is young (46) and will likely even evolve as a coach in the next few years. Some of his successes. Jason Kendall. Kendall had some great season before Perry came along to Pittsburgh, but was coming off of 2 career worse seasons in 01-02. In 03-04 under Perry, Kendall again had great seasons with a .399 OBP in both. 2005, in Oakland, without Perry, Kendall again had a horrible year. This year, he was back at being a .295/.367 OBP hitter. Eric Chavez, Bradley, and Nick Swisher, while already having solid batting eyes each had huge jumps from their 05 numbers in BB/PA. Chavez and Bradley had the 2nd most patient years of their careers. For the record, he only coached Aramis for 1/2 a season until he was traded to the Cubs. I hope he can get Aramis to get more selective. I hope can get Jones back to his 05 patience numbers. Most importantly, I hope he can help the young players, who are coming to the big leagues with Joshua's great coaching keep what they have been taught in the minors and carry it over to big league success.
  18. Yeah, I believe so. Aybar is 23, hit .313 with the Braves, had a .121 BB/PA with the Dodgers. OPS was .767 for the year, but he has .850 potential. Giles had a .728 OPS, could make over $5M in arbitration this year, before becoming a FA next year.
  19. JD Drew is 2nd to ARod in my most wanted possibly available players.
  20. I really like the trade for Cleveland. They already have Marte at 3B and needed the help at 2B. Potentially, a pretty even trade if both players hit their ceilings. Barfield is gonna be ready to break out next year, especially if he hits between Sizemore and Hafner in the 2-hole.
  21. I think Aramis will be a Cub. But, if it gets to the point where other teams can negotiate, I think my confidence level goes fro 80/20 that he will be a Cub to about 40/60. The Angels will give him whatever he wants.
  22. I'm not sure about still the easy pre-season schedule. Duke, Southern Illinois, Kentucky, the preseason NIT (hopefully past the first two rounds), and I know this game is actually during the conference season but Connecticut should make this non-conference season again a little too much. I fully support having a couple tests non-conference, but playing what is likely to be 4-5 top 25 teams non-conference (depending on how the preseason NIT goes) before going into the Big 10 is a little too much for me. Well, this team learning the system will certainly be battle-tested by the time it comes to conference play once again, however. I didn't say it was easy. I said "easiest in a while". I expect at least 3 non-conference losses, and as many as 6 (including an annual slip up against a state rival ND, Butler, ISU). But Duke is the only one looking like a mismatch, unless they meet UNC in the NIT. UK, SIU, and even UConn are all pretty even teams to me. And if they past the 1st 2 rounds in the NIT, Gonzaga and Tennessee are comparable and beatable teams. A lot of inexperience in college basketball this season. Does anyone have a returning contributor that's a senior?
  23. IU won its first exhibition game 95-50 over North Dakota. Very balanced attack. Strong defensive performance. Great rebounding. Great from the field. Great from 3. Got 16 votes in the polls. Gonna be an interesting season. Easiest preseason schedule in a while, with only Duke being a non-winnable game.
  24. They got Ben Zobrist in the Huff trade from Houston. He's not gonna be a star, but probably has more upside than Cedeno. Good defensively. Good patience in the minors. Looks to be a decent hitter for average.
