  1. I think some people are taking wanting antoher pitcher the wrong way. Sure, Marshall, Gallagher, Hart, etc. are all capable of being slotted in the rotation. The problem is not all those guys can be slotted in the rotation, because 4 spots are taken by Zambrano, Lilly, Hill, Marquis. It basically becomes a preference of sitting 3-4 guys down in AAA, when you can trade 1-2 of them and improve your major league team. The Cubs have several prospects, although not great, who are ready to be on a 25-man roster somewhere. Why not trade some of that depth, that won't have a spot on the Cubs veteran laden roster anyway?
  2. I really don't want Nathan. On one hand, he'd be great for 2009 with Howry, Dempster, Eyre and possibly Wood off the books. On the other, he's not a position of need this year and it would take a crapload to trade for him.
  3. Greinke would be an excellent pickup. And I don't think you have to worry about too many 24 year olds wanting to relieve over starting a ballgame. His numbers have been considerably worse as a starter, throughout his careeer, but he is a guy that I expect Larry Rothschild could really turn around. He had a very strong September, even with 1 disaster start. He finished the year, giving up 4 ERs in his last 18 innings. He's super cheap in salary and likely in prospects also. Cheap enough both ways that the Cubs could probably still go out and get a guy like Blanton/Burnett if they wanted. I'd think the Royals would take a trade of a guy they could slot into their rotation in 2008 and a position player with some upside. Marshall, Gallagher or Hart along with Patterson. I'd maybe even give up a guy like Kyler Burke.
  4. Should look at him when his team comes into Wrigley to play. Just keep Murton if you want some RH hitting off the bench.
  5. That looks more like Houston's basket than the Cubs'. Too many brown ones in that basket. Tejada, Lee and Wandy. Looks to be more in the rear bottom.

  7. So people are now taking rumors of appearances in the Mitchell report as fact that said player used steroids? Hate to bring the far past up, but aren't you one of the people who said you are pretty sure Portis has been involved in dog fighting because he commented that he didnt' think it was that big a deal? I think this is as close to fact as it gets, without being able to place the needle in someone's......nevermind. I misread what you said. But I don't think it's a "rumor" that Prior is on the list.
  8. Rockies have lost out on all the mediocre 2B talent this offseason. Nobody wants to play for the NL Champs?
  9. Yes. He's not as good of a person as I thought. But he still should have been tendered a contract.
  10. Wasn't a math major but I don't think about 30 (active) players constitutes "1/2 the league." I was a math major and it's exactly half. Go look it up! 30 teams X 25 players = 750 total players 30/750 = .04 or 4% which is a lot less than 1/2 or 50%. Did you really take that seriously?

  12. Does this list really mean anything? Nobody on there is a surprise to me, not a single person. Can the MLB suspend 1/2 the league?
  13. No Pirates? I think about every other team is represented.
  14. You can trade him. Heck, you can let him pick wherever he wants to go and get a serviceable prospect for him.
  15. Cubs get: Khalil Greene, Damaso Marte Padres get: Jason Bay, Ryan Theriot Pirates get: Chase Headley, Michael Barrett, Sean Marshall, Felix Pie, and Padres P prospect.
  16. I pray your wrong. Most projections I have seen for KFuk have him hitting 20 homers with 25 being the high end. DLee's power seemed to come back the second half of last year so hopefully he return to being a 30-35 homer threat. Also Dlee looks like he'll have a better lineup around than he's ever had in a cubs uniform. Power is more than HRs. If you look at Fukudome's PECOTA projections (.289/.401/.504 ), probably a little high across the board. But that's an ISOP of .215. Even with Derrek's power surge in the 2nd half, he finished at .195, thanks to a big September with the power. FWIW, I think Fukudome will hit much more than 10-15 HRs. I could see him easily hitting 20-25 pretty consistently. I believe LH power hitters can thrive in Wrigley in the HR department, because the wind typically blows to aid balls down the RF corner. Corey Patterson, Mark Bellhorn, Henry Rodriguez, and Rick Wilkins all hit for more power in Chicago than they did in the rest of the world. Jacque Jones and Fred McGriff posted power numbers they hadn't touched in about 6-8 years.
  17. It's apparent the Cubs don't view Patterson as a viable second baseman any longer, and as a LF, I'm less than enamored with him. I'm not upset over losing him. Murton- I hate to give him up as I think he has skills that our team could use. He doesn't really have a position. I can give him up as well. Gallagher- This is the one that hurts. I'd love to replace him with Veal, Hart, or Marshall. Guzman- meh. At one time what could we have gotten for him? He's damaged goods. All in all, it's not a horrible deal on our part. Essentially, Murton + Gallagher for Roberts. I'd rather choose another target than Roberts if we're trading Gallagher though. That's my thought on it as well. Why give up so much for Roberts, why not explore at other options which might make more sense. It's not essentially anything. It is what it is....4 players. Granted, I'm not high on Patterson anymore and I think Guzman may be done pitching effectively.....but they are still included, and they still have at least a remote shot of doing something positive for the Cubs. And both are being traded at their lowest possible value.
  18. A minor league contract would be a no-brainer. But I'd imagine a team like Pittsburgh, Tampa, or the Marlins would give him a major league contract.
  19. That's a lot to give up for 1 role player. They get 3 guys that can make their 25-man roster and a "no-risk/high reward" pitcher in Guzman. I'd probably do it without the Gooz, unless they throw in a pitching prospect.
  20. I like PTI. Around the Horn, though, is the worst show on TV.
  21. FWIW, if the Cubs get Roberts. I would go: Roberts Lee Fukudome Ramirez Soriano. I think Lee will probably get on base slightly more than KFuk, and KFuk will hit for a little more power. Plus, it breaks up the RHs, which every manager seems to care about way too much.
  22. No kidding. Easily above average at all 3 OF spots, the best defender in the game at SS, an elite defensive 1B, and above average D at 3B and C. Did you really just call Alfonso Soriano "easily above average" at playing defense? Easily?!? He's not pretty out there, but you can't really argue his range (when healthy) and arm. Not so good going back in the LCF gap, though. I probably wouldn't quite say "easily" either, but he's above average.
  23. Hint: look at more than 2007. I know I'm new, but why is everyone so condescending and belittling around here? I wasn't trying to be. I'm really sorry if I was. You will come to find out, that's not my style at all. Wasn't necessarily aimed at you. Sorry. It just seems like there's a lot of sniping at certain times. I guess that's the nature of a message board. I guess the "hint" part could be viewed that way. Again, I apologize. Also, to be clear, I wasn't disputing that Bedard is a better pitcher. I think he is, but it's a virtual wash. I don't think the difference in competition is that big (as I pointed out). I don't think the difference in talent is that big. I do like that Bedard keeps the ball on the ground more, but all signs point to Hill being the better strikeout pitcher (minors and past ML history). It's like arguing Brady or Peyton Manning. It's basically a matter of choice.
