  1. I'd go for any of those 3 also. Alex Gonzalez/Jeff Keppinger would be nice too. Of course, Peralta, Greene or Furcal would be too.
  2. Granted Bassett is the team's 4th leading scorer, but they have played some of their best ball without him. Gordon, Ellis, and Crawford are better handlers. Ratliff takes his place as the "shooter" and I believe can pick up the scoring slack once he's in game shape. Ratliff's also miles better defensively. Bassett's really icing on the cake (really good icing) for this year's team, whereas last year and next year he will be an absolute necessity.
  3. I don't understand this argument. The back-up catcher plays every 5th game or so and is typically the last option pinch-hit AB off the bench. Even a strong hitting catcher won't be the first or even second pinch-hit option. In other words, the role's value is defined in the games he plays, not in his pinch-hit prospect. Would you really sacrifice 32 games of defensive performance for a few dozen (at most) extra PH opportunities? um yeah, I never said a single word about pinch hitting.
  4. Bassett's not a huge loss. AJ should be able to pick up some of his shooting ability. Ellis needs to be the primary ball handler. Let Crawford and Gordon play on the wing. Let Ellis run the show.
  5. IU v. Pitt would be a nice 2nd round game. Of course, the Midwest is the toughest region with the best 2 seed (Wash St.), at least the 2nd best 2 seed (Butler), and Pitt who would be a 3 seed if healthy. Some dangerous 7 seeds in that bracket.
  6. And 4 of those 5 defensive starters USC loses are probably 4 of their 5 best defenders this year (LBs Ray Malauga [JR who hasn't declared yet] and Keith Rivers, DT Sedrick Ellis, DE Lawrence Jackson). Of course they probably can plug in Everson Griffin at DE and any of their multiple 5-star LBs and not miss a beat. They always lose a bunch of kids don't they? They just reload with more. Yeah, but they usually have a lull on D when they lost that much talent (see 2006 season). Of course, they bring back all their offense except Booty, Baker, and the TE. So, they'll probably be better offensively.
  7. USC will lose a lot of D too, with probably 5 starters being drafted in the first 2 rounds in April. I think they will probably NOT win the NC again this year, despite having the best talent. Who wins that QB job may be the most interesting battle of the offseason. My national championship game is Georgia over Ohio St, as the SEC takes turns beating on OSU.
  8. Roberts as a lead off hitter in 2007: .288 .376 .424, 710 plate appearances, 101 runs scored Soriano as a lead off hitter in 2007: .308 .345 .579, 577 plate appearances, 92 runs scored. CLEARLY not a lead off hitter? I beg to differ. If Soriano had 710 plate appearances last year, he would have scored more runs than Roberts scored last year by quite a bit. And isn't that really what you want your lead off hitter to do? Even if the Cubs get Roberts, I have no issues with Pineilla batting Soriano and Roberts 1/2 in the order. And if the Cubs could get some better bats hitting 7th and 8th in the order, I think Soriano challenges the 100 RBI mark in 2008. Agreed. I would go Soriano-Roberts, with the current roster. Mainly because Theriot is the obvious replacement in the 2-hole.
  9. If the conditions are nice, the Pats will dominate the Jags and win by 20. If the conditions are poor (snow and/or rain), the Pats will dominate the Jags and win by 14.
  10. The bold is exactly what everyone has been arguing. Not that he's untouchable, just that you are trading your top 2 odds on favorite for the 5th starter in the same trade for a hitter at a non-need position. And I disagree that Marshall isn't any better than Marquis/Dempster.
  11. If we can get Roberts and another pitcher like Burnett I would be ecstatic going into the season. Definitely. Soriano/Roberts/Lee/Ramirez/Fukudome/Soto/Pie/Theriot lineup. Zambrano/Lilly/Burnett/Hill/Marquis would be solid. Another bat or arm could be added depending on how Pie/Marquis do.
  12. I really want Roberts. I think it can be a significant upgrade. I actually don't think the proposed package is too much, it's just the wrong combo. I hate including Cedeno, but Marshall and Gallagher are replaceable. The problem is replacing both at the same time and only getting 1 piece to show for it. Even if it was Cedeno, Gallagher, Veal (or another top arm not named Ceda), I'd probably go for it, reluctantly giving up Ronny.
  13. I'm biased, but I'd put us at #1. Hard to argue with Memphis, though. Where is it? We never play well in Columbia. Either way, we have no business losing to you guys this year. I'd probably vote Kansas #1 right now. Still think UCLA is the best team though. Right now, Memphis #1. Kansas a close #2. UNC #3, and they are actually better than I thought they were. And I agree, UCLA has the best team.
  14. Burnett will cost a lot less to acquire in terms of prospects for the Cubs. That could be huge, considering what the Cubs are rumored to be giving up for Roberts and still having interest in Figgins.
  15. Wow. Steeler fans are whiny. I agree, going for 2 was stupid, especially from the 12. But most coaches go for two anytime they get down 11. It's stupid, but they all do it. Now, we get to hear for a week how Jacksonville can control the tempo and are a hot team and will give the Patriots a lot of trouble. Blah blah blah. The Jags have no shot to beat the Pats. Put them in snow, on ice, whatever....it's not gonna happen. To compete with the Pats you have to have a good CB/S combo. Let's see the teams that held NE under 4 offensive TDs: Colts- Sanders, Jackson; Ravens- Reed, McAllister/Rolle; Eagles- Dawkins, Sheppard. And the Jets did it in horrible conditions. The only teams remaining that can beat the Patriots are the Colts and Packers.
  16. Penn St. at home? That loss probably effectively puts an end to Illinois' season.
  17. Agree with everything. Easley is 38, but if Derosa isn't gonna play SS, Easley can. Easley played over 200 innings at SS as recently as 2006. Can't really field well, but neither can Theriot. Colon is a much higher reward, will likely being the same risk as Leiber. Trade is still probably the way to go, though.
  18. Yeah, Murton, Patterson, Gallagher is a lot better than Cedeno, Gallagher, Marshall. I hate the idea of trading Gallagher and Marshall in the same deal. For one, you give a team 2 potential back of the rotation starters for the immediate future and I believe they are the Cubs biggest bargaining chips because cheap, ML ready, pitching is valuable. For two, the pretty much means you have to put Dempster in the rotation, because you just gave up 2 of your 5th starter options, without getting one back. (I guess you still have Kevin Hart, but he's a long shot to be the 5th)
  19. I'll do it. Never started one before.
  20. Really? Z was pretty lean last year. Blanco has no purpose since Geo is a good defender. I'd like them to get a better hitting backup C. When Geo sits, the Cubs will see a downgrade on offense and defense.
  21. The Roberts trade doesn't involve any real prospects, outside of Gallagher. But everyone in that proposed deal is ML ready and hanging around AAA (or the bench in Murton's case), so it's not like the farm system would be depleted. You can still get a good arm by trading actual prospects (young players not ML ready).
  22. Yeah, sorry. I meant in an ideal lineup that's where all those guys would hit and be pretty prototypical for that spot in the lineup. I think Goony was getting at that, but I stopped reading. :D
  23. That would be interesting. Cubs seemingly have 2 guys who would be good for the #2 spot (Fukudome and Lee if his power stays in 06-07 range), 2 guys for the #5 spot (Ramirez, Soriano), 2 7th hitters (Soto, Derosa) and 2 8th hitters (Pie, Cedeno/Theriot)
  24. Doubt that comes close IMO. Probably more along the lines of Gallagher, Ceda, Murton, Burke I would think. I'm sure the Mets will be in there as well offering alot. That's basically the same deal with Murton added in. Hart/Gallagher may be just a matter of preference. Same with Ceda/Veal.
  25. Forget about Street, no need to give up prospects when you already have about 8 RH relievers. Blanton, though, would be a no-brainer to go after. Have no idea what Oakland would want, but I would imagine it would include some young talent that's not necessarily ML ready. Maybe something like Hart, Veal and Burke with them throwing a prospect back the Cubs way also.
