  1. [expletive] you pal.
  2. If I'm not mistaken. Part of the agreement in the last deal was that the owner's would agree not to contract that time and the player's agreed not to oppose it in the future. Anyone else remeber that or am I nuts? That's correct. I still expect the PA to raise hell about it though. Florida, Tampa Bay, Minnesota and Washington are my guesses.
  3. Something you nitwits seem to forget is that he was found INNOCENT of all charges in the restaurant case and the charges of his ex-wife and ex-girlfriend have never been proven either. They were charges made by women in a divorce proceeding and a civil suit. Yeah, no one's ever lied in those circumstances. He was so hard on his ex-wife that she was by his side when he died... Kirby Puckett was a tremendous baseball player. One of the greatest in my lifetime. His night in Game 6 in 1991 may have been one of the finest single-game pressure performances in baseball history. He told his teammates in the clubhouse before the game to climb on his back because he was going to carry them, and he did despite not having done much to that point in the series. People also forget he tore up the Cardinals in the 87 series. He hit something like .375 against them that year. If he played in New York he'd be considered a modern day Mantle or DiMaggio.
  4. They'll beat South Africa in the first round. All they have to do to advance is beat Mexico. Anything can happen in one game. When they get to the second all they have to do is beat Japan and Korea. Japan is the weaker of the two teams and should be very beatable as they don't have much pitching. Once again it comes down to one game. Beat Korea and they're in the semis. I think they can do that. I think Mexico beats Canada is the first round. I think they stand the best shot at upsetting the US in the first round as well. Can't agree about Japan being a weaker side than Korea. Why do you think Japan doesn't have much pitching? Is there something in the Texas water? I think texascub's second round picks are spot on. Well, Japan couldn't beat Korea in a one game shot. Canada wins the right game in each round and they'll be in the semis.

  6. Change Cuba to Panama and Mexico to Canada and I agree. Either way it'll be USA, Canada, the DR and Venezuela in the semis. With the US and Venezuela as the No. 1 seeds.
  7. "Scott Eyre who just signed a 3 year, 11 million dollar deal with the Cubs staying in a $98 a night hotel." I remember that when Gary Gaetti came to the Cubs in 98, he lived in a cheap hotel and took the el to Wrigley. Didn't Rod "Dead Arm" Beck live in his motorhome at one time or is that another former Cubs player I'm thinking of? I could swear it was Beck though. It fits in to his personality. Yep he lived in an RV outside Sec Taylor Stadium in Des Moines when he was trying to come back with the I-Cubs.
  8. This is frustrating, and symptomatic of the Cubs incompetent handling of medical situations. How so? Wood didn't tell them anything until a couple of days ago and then all he said was he had some discomfort. They did an MRI pretty much immediately then talked about what to do. It was a three-day turnaround. I don't see how this is symptomatic of anything. I don't buy the Cubs' story of injury timelines, ever. Great, but your feelings are completely irrelevant to the discussion. How is this situation symptomatic of a problem? Unless you can prove they're lying, they announced this after following the proper steps.

  10. Or Kerry didn't tell anybody he was hurt. It's also entirely possible they're just going in and doing a clean out and he'll be back throwing in a week or two. Going in for a scope is nothing in this day and age.
  11. I'm not claiming it is a ringing endorsement. I just feel it's an indication that Grissom pretty much has the job unless a leg falls off. Grissom's got the job because there's nobody else to give it to. The young guys need to play in DM or AA because there's no way in the world they'll play for Dusty in Chicago.
  12. Well this should be up to 10 pages by 3 p.m.
  13. There are already Astros affiliates in suburban Austin (PCL- Round Rock) and Corpus Christi (Texas League). Nolan Ryan's son runs them both I believe. Texas' AAA (PCL) affiliate is in OKC and it's AA affiliate (TL) is in suburban Dallas (Frisco). There isn't an A-ball league in that part of the country.
  14. One reason you won't see an NFL team in San Antonio is a big reason you won't see an MLB team there either. There isn't enough major corporate support for a team. The Spurs suck up pretty much all the corporate money in town and they only play 41 or so home nights a year. There isn't enough business money to support an 81-night-a-year baseball team. You can't count on tapping into the Austin market either. While the two cities are fairly close to each other the money in Austin is on the north side of city. People aren't going to fight the crappy Austin traffic on a regular basis to drive to SA for a baseball game on a regular basis.
  15. My concern isn't that Grissom would block a guy who should be in Chicago instead of Des Moines. Looking at the 40-man roster I see a bunch of guys who would be better off playing everyday for the I-Cubs than riding the pine in Chicago. If Dusty kept Greenberg, for example, the kid would NEVER see the field. He'd be the absolute last resort as a PH and would rarely get to spot start. Was it Cedeno who was called up at one point last year and never got an at-bat? My concern is that Dusty will find a way to play Grissom three-four times a week at Murton's expense. THAT's the problem. And I think Grissom would be a good guy to have coming off the bench if he hits at all.
  16. he honestly can't be surprised when people say he doesn't like young players. his quote about how ST is for the young guys doesn't make any sense at all. I don't see anything wrong with this. With young guys the question is are they ready with old guys it's can he still play. If Grissom can hit LH pitching and doesn't expect to start he could be decent player to have around. The other part of the equation is who will he be keeping off the roster? Is someone like Sing better off riding the pine at Wrigley or playing every day in AAA? I completely agree with what you're saying. I think Grissom is a good guy to have coming off the bench if he can still hit. With any other manager I don't think anybody would be griping about Grissom being on the team. The only problem is, the first time Murton goes hitless in a game he'll be on the bench for two weeks because Dusty wants to "protect" him.
  17. I cannot hit curveball. Fastballs bats like very much. Curveballs, bats are afraid...
  18. Best check that again 2003 was a career year for Edmonds, which he then topped in 2004. 2005 was an off year compared to what Edmonds usually does but still ranked in the top 20 in most offensive stats (exept batting avg of course) I'll go out on a limb and say Edmonds doesn't come close to the numbers he put up last year. Rolen will be on the DL for an extended period of time too. Bank on it. Doesn't mean the Cardinals won't find a way to win the division though. They are, after all, the Spawn of Satan.
  19. I agree much to my dismay (regarding the Cubs. I usually agree with goony). However, if the deal nets the Cubs a power stick in the OF I won't be disapointed. I agree 100%. But the million dollar question is what power stick? I don't see a difference-maker showing up in a spring training deal. What we have in camp is what we'll see on Opening Day.
  20. Doesn't look like there's a lot of decisions to be made right now. My guess, barring a major trade, is that the roster will look like this on Opening Day: Zambrano Prior Maddux Rusch Williams Dempster Eyre Howry Williamson Wuertz Novoa 7th pitcher (Ohman?), or 6th bench guy (Augie, Theriot, Greenberg, Restovich) Barrett Lee Walker Cedeno Ramirez Murton Pierre Jones Blanco Perez Hairston Mabry Grissom (If he does anything at all, Dusty will keep him) 6th bench guy (Augie, Theriot, Greenberg, Restovich) or 7th pitcher (Ohman?) When Wood comes back the 6th bench guy/7th pitcher goes down and Williams goes to the bullpen. If Miller comes back, Novoa goes down and Rusch goes to the pen. There aren't a lot of good options for a sixth bench guy in camp so I have a feeling Dusty will go with the extra pitcher. I also think Wellmeyer will be sent out in a deal for a minor leaguer to free up a roster spot.
  21. Cuba doesn't have a prayer in this tournament. Fidel's going to wish they stayed home when they don't get past the second pool. No way they knock out either Venezuela or the DR in that round to get to the semis. And they'll have trouble with the first pool too. Puerto Rico will win that pool, then it's down to the winner of the Cuba-Panama game and anything can happen in a one game situation.
  22. I can see this coming already... http://www.suntimes.com/output/cubs/cst-spt-cub20.html
