  1. This is just a wild guess, but I think they'd build one somewhere. Or expand Bricktown Ballpark.
  2. It's hard to believe Sosa wasn't juiced if you look at the way his body changed but I think the real reasons for his decline can be traced to two plays in 2002 and 2003. Late in 2002 he collided with Mark Bellhorn in RF and the injury essentially ended Sosa's season. I don't remember what the specific injury was but I believe he screwed up his back in the collision. He got off to a slow start in 2003 and I'm convinced the lingering effects from that injury had something to do with that. Then he got hit in the head against the Pirates in one of the worst beanings I've ever seen. He was never the same hitter after that. I've always thought that if those two things don't happen he has a very different final season and a half in Chicago. I also think the corked bat issue never happens either.
  3. Henry Blanco got the game winning hit against the DR to clinch Venezuela's first winter league championship since 1989. He was credited with a base hit when his pop fly to shallow left field hit the shortstop on the top of the head after he lost the ball in the lights allowing the winning run scored from third. Jeremi Gonzalez was 1-0 with a 1.20 ERA and 12 K in 15 innings in the Series.
  4. Walton's streak came later in the season, it ended in late August if I remember correctly, when the Cubs were making their run to the division title. Walton broke camp with the Cubs as their starting CF and leadoff hitter and there was some buzz about him as the season started, putting him on the radar early in the year. I think Smith started the year in Des Moines and came up when the Cubs suffered some injuries early in the year. I believe he was platooning in LF with Lloyd McClendon early on. Despite the numbers, Walton was more valuable to the Cubs' line-up and a better choice for ROY. Let me be the first to point out that this scenario would never happen under Dusty Baker. I really miss Don Zimmer. He's easily the best manager this franchise has had since Jim Frey left.
  5. Yeah, it'd be a darm shame if Albert Pujols ruptured an achilles giving it his all for the Dominican Republic.
  6. Harry: Mike Marshall is back in Los Angeles getting some cocaine for his foot. Steve: That's Novocaine Harry. Harry: That Dutch Daulton is a good looking guy, full head of hair, broad shoulders, muscles everywhere, two balls.... and a strike. But my favorite is in my sig.
  7. They could probably use a 10th outfielder. Never can have enough of those.
  8. Why would that have been illogical if he loves where he plays? because we don't know if he loves where he plays. he's been one of the biggest critics of the new stadium and it's effect on the numbers of left-handed hitters, for one. you just can't ignore the premier free agent on the market because he's from california and likes to surf, and then say: "he wasn't available anyways". the cubs didn't even sniff giles, even though signing him would have gone farther to closing the biggest hole on this team than a million free agent middle relievers would have. that's hendry's fault, he's a crappy GM. We do know that SD announced they were moving the fences in around the time Giles was signed so it won't be the graveyard it's been in the past. How do we know for a fact the Cubs "didn't even sniff Giles"? Just because it wasn't in the newspaper doesn't mean it didn't happen. Giles wanted to stay in San Diego all along, that's readily apparent. My guess is that teams looking for an OF had a pretty good idea of that since NOBODY really "sniffed" him. Or is every single MLB GM "crappy"?
  9. If Prior demanded a trade there's no way in the world it wouldn't be leaked by somebody. It'd be all over the Chicago papers. Something that big doesn't stay quiet.
  10. Baltimore's GM should be shot if he makes the above A deal. If "A" was Z, Hill, Pie, and Dopriak it MIGHT be enough.
  11. Bruce: What was Dusty's fascination with Jose Macias? I never understood why that guy hung on around here for two years and played as much as he did.
  12. As a Cubs fan I think it's a great move by the Cardinals.
  13. Except, of course, Giles never wanted to leave San Diego...
  14. Patterson gets dealt for sure. He's as good as gone. And it wouldn't surprise me if Walker goes too. Which means All Neifi, All The Time. The question is, who are the two guys who fill those slots once they go? What can you get for CP, Walker and a minor leaguer or two? Does Eric Byrnes make sense as a platoon RF? And will Dusty be dumb enough to go with a seven-man bullpen yet again at the cost them an extra bat? The bullpen should be set as it is. Williams and Hill need to pitch out of the rotation in Des Moines instead of rot in the pen in Chicago.
  15. In an ideal world, it would have been allocated towards the rapidly declining farm system. But it wasn't a Jones or bust scenario, overspending like he did indicates otherwise though. And had he done that the same people screaming about how he overspent for players this year would be screaming he should be picking up whoever he can to improve the club.
  16. Hendry was armed with a lot of money but he had nobody to spend it on. Typical Cub luck. Would people prefer signing Johnny Damon to a bloated four-year deal to play center field? Or overpay A.J. Burnett? It's not like he had a bunch of options. People can whine and moan that he should have made a big trade, but you can't make one by yourself. You need another team to go along.
  17. Unless you consider the Phillies really need a closer.
  18. You think Feliz Navidad is the Astros' new set-up guy.
  19. Hendry is, rightly, not going to deal Pie, so that's not realistic.
  20. Good call, Mon. Arguably one of the ten best players in baseball is available, plays a position where we have a gaping hole and could be had for a few relievers and a starter. Hendry should be fired soon after. What can the Cubs offer that tops any Houston deal involving Lidge? Be realistic please.
  21. The only 2005 players still on the roster who should be considered untouchable are Prior, Z, Dempster, Lee and ARam. Everybody else should be available for the right price.
  22. And end up with you know who playing 2nd if Walker is moved in another deal. Exactly. If the Cubs want Bradley or Wilkerson, Walker's going to be part of the cost. It's worth dealing Walker if the deal will upgrade RF.
  23. But if Walker nets this team a RF I'd rather see Vidro starting at 2B instead of Neifi.
  24. I suggested it too and got the same response. If Vidro can play I wouldn't mind seeing him in Chicago. If all it took was Patterson and a minor league pitcher I'd say that's a pretty good deal. Hendry needs to remake this team. The idea that Walker is untouchable doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. They've misssed the playoffs twice with him, what's the difference if they miss the playoffs without him? If Vidro can be more help than Walker, then Vidro's worth the risk. It's that simple.
  25. The XM baseball channel reported that Tejada wanted to be traded on Monday afternoon.
