  1. Plus one more player so we don't have a seven-man bullpen again.
  2. Whether you agree with the point of the statement or not is irrelevant. It's just a funny statement. But a loaded Neifi is better than a loaded Furcal...
  3. I'll just randomly repeat the quote above in case it gets lost anywhere in this thread. Look at those numbers closely. he can play many positions poorly. versatility, man, versatility!
  4. The Chicago Cubs: Rewarding Mediocrity Since 1908
  5. I think Mench could cost a good deal more than Mitre, though. I'd have to think Affeldt has more value than Mitre, so just a deal involving Mitre isn't likely to get it done. My guess is that Hill and Mitre would get it done.
  6. With Walker, Hairston and Perez there was no reason to have Macias last year either...
  7. The Olympic soccer competition is also far from any country's best. The men's tournament actually has an age restriction. Baseball was dropped for one reason. It was a chance for the Eurotrash at the IOC to stick it to the United States.
  8. hyperbole If Prior, Z and Wood are all healthy, the Cubs can beat anyone. That's proven to be a big if. very big if. It's also a very big if that Rolen and Edmonds will stay healthy for an entire year or that the Cards' bullpen will remain solid. Or that the Cards rotation will remain healthy for that matter. The Cardinals signing Giles by itself doesn't doom the Cubs. Hendry failing to improve the ballclub at all would be a bigger factor.
  9. Nope. Boston Herald reporting he turned the deal down after thinking it over. http://redsox.bostonherald.com/redSox/view.bg?articleid=109723
  10. Per WHDH and WEEI in Boston.
  11. Couple of things: 1. Anybody who thinks Michael Young isn't a good defensive shortstop hasn't seen him play. Yes he might be better at second but he's a very good shortstop. 2. Why would the Rangers want a third team involved in a Blaylock for Abreau deal?
  12. Reairing now. Martinez: Wood, Prior can't throw breaking balls for strikes consistently like the Sox pitchers. Until they learn to do that they won't be top flight pitchers. May have been specifically referring to Prior on the last comment but I'm not sure. Patrick: Asked 9 or 10 writers while at Series. All 9 or 10 said Dusty is a bad fit. Martinez: He may not be a fit or the players may not fit his style. that is one of the teams that gets overrated dramatically. Not very athletic, can't manufacture runs, relies too much on the long ball. That team is not put together very well. Patrick: Several of the writers i talked to were chicago writers and they said Dusty spends too much time worrying about things he can't control: what's said on TV, what people are writing, what people are saying. Granted this isn't earthshattering news but its nice to hear people who are closer to the game say the same things a lot of us are saying on here.
  13. Yes it could. One other point about next year's pen, for the love of God Dusty you only need SIX relievers.
  14. That's about, what, a five minute trip in the NL West?
  15. For the record you ARE the only one bringing up Farnsworth. Vance merely labeled Lidge a gutless choking dog. Which, by the criteria put forward, applies to Lidge this post-season. And, as I pointed out, it only applies to Farnsworth. To apply it to anyone else is ridiculous.
  16. If you have XM radio, you might want to listen to the rebroadcast of MLB Live on 175 between 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Central time. I was listening to the live airing of the show this morning on my drive in to work and the hosts, Mark Patrick and Buck Martinez, got into a discussion about Dusty and the Cubs. I'm paraphrasing here but I think I have the gist of it. Patrick mentioned that the Cubs were a fairly common topic of discussion among the media at the World Series and the near unanimous consensus of the writers he talked to was that Dusty was a bad fit for the Cub organization. The main concern that was mentioned was that Dusty spends too much time worrying about stuff that he can't control, like what is said about him and the team in the media. In other words, he's way too thin-skinned. Martinez pointed out the obvious, that this team isn't athletic enough, relies to much on the long ball, etc. and said its often very overrated. He also tried to stand up for Dusty and said that the problem could also be the team is a bad fit for Dusty instead of Dusty being a bad fit for the team. Be interested to hear people's thoughts on this.
  17. For the record I'm not the one who keeps bringing it up.
  18. Actually that term only applies to Kyle Farnsworth, who is, in fact, a gutless choking dog.
  19. Are you kidding? How do you suppose most guys become closers...they're just born into it? No, typically they are set-up men first, or in rarer cases converted starters or dominant college closers. Asking Hawkins to close the first time was acceptable. Going back to the well after his failures was not. Same for remlinger in the few times he was asked. If Dempster falters for the first two months 2006, are you suggesting Dusty is an idiot by turning to a lights-out set-up guy to fill the role? I'm suggesting you can always count on Dusty to do the wrong thing.
  20. You realize that your little dancing banana is what EVERY Sox fan uses over at WhiteSoxInteractive, right? I've been using it for long time, but point taken. maybe I do need one that's a little more appropriate for the occasion. Is there one that shows a corn stalk falling asleep in his still-running car, with a hose snaked from the exhaust pipe through the window and a half-finished handle of cheap vodka spilling onto the passenger seat? Yeah but you need Premium to get it. :D
  21. Scoop Jackson is a one-trick pony. He's a race-baiting piece of trash and should be treated as such. The Cub fan in question should have sent him to the hospital with a mouth full of missing teeth.
  22. Yes, he even talked to the Cubs before deciding he wanted to close and not set-up. And his best friend in Minnesota was LaTroy. Another reason how fans can help recruit players. I understand almost all players will go where the cash is but it sure helps if you have a supportive fan base like the Cubs have. Of course I'm sure LaTroy would say otherwise. If LaTroy hadn't sucked people might have been more supportive.
