  1. Defensively, he's the best of the three. Offensively, he's Ryan Theriot lite.
  2. They're gonna want to have Cashner throwing on back-to-back days before the season starts. I'd be shocked if he starts Sunday. I know I'm missing something here, but I'm not following you for some reason. Do you mean they'll want him pitching back to back days so he'll be coming out of the pen and Silva basically won the job today? If so, then it'll be really interesting to see IF Cashner actually does start Sunday then. Because then anyway, it'd at least appear as if it'd be likely to see him move to AAA and continue starting possibly. If he's going to be in the bullpen to start the season, they're gonna want to have him able to pitch on consecutive days. So yeah, if he makes his start Sunday, that's a pretty good sign he'll be starting either in the majors or in Iowa. But I sincerely doubt we'd let an arm like his get reps in Des Moines when he could be helping in the big league pen.

  4. Signed with the Nats already. Thank god.
  5. He did? Yeah, he did. If you provide enough value with your defense and baserunning, you really don't have to hit particularly well. Pierre was excellent in the field for us (god bless Wrigley being small enough his arm never mattered), and while he didn't add much with his SB totals, he was excellent in the other aspects of the running game. Any way you want to cut it, 2.9 WAR. We gave up too much for him, but he was a valuable player for us.
  6. The gist of the article is the black hole the Cubs have had in CF for decades. Might be a nice problem to have 2 great young CFs. Of course, we haven't really had a black hole in CF. Maybe we haven't had superstar production, but we've only really had 3 bad years in the last decade. 2010 - Marlon Byrd was great. 2009 - Kosuke Fukudome was good offensively, not so much on defense. 2008 - Jim Edmonds was great, Reed Johnson was good. 2007 - Jacque Jones was solid on both sides of the ball. 2006 - Juan Pierre hit just enough and played good defense. 2005 - Corey Patterson was awful. 2004 - Corey Patterson was good. 2003 - Corey Patterson was great, Kenny Lofton was great. 2002 - Corey Patterson sucked. 2001 - Gary Matthews Jr. sucked, Michael Tucker was good.
  7. How dare you speak about Starlin Castro in such a way. Love him for real life value. But as far as fantasy is concerned, I'd be happy if he helped with batting average and didn't hurt anywhere else.
  8. I think that's because if a catcher sucks at hitting, people automatically assume he's good defensively. Jason Kendall is my favorite example. He was always considered a great hitter with an awful glove when he was in Pittsburgh. Now all the talking heads wont shut up about what a great defender he is. To be fair, he was one of the worst at throwing out baserunners before Ned Yost got to him. Jason Kendall's rSB from 2003 through 2010. -4, +2, -4, +4, -8, +8, -2, -1 Yeah, he had one very good year after going to the Brewers... but he's coasting on the reputation of a fluke year.
  9. http://www.northsidebaseball.com/forum/search?st=0&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&keywords=shoulder&t=52078&sf=msgonly&ch=-1&start=0&p=2080638&view=show#p2080638 208 page thread. 14 results when searching for "shoulder"... most of which are referring to other people entirely. Strangely enough, Kyle was the only one harping on his shoulder back then.

  11. SS is a wasteland too. Hanley/Tulo > Reyes >>> Jeter/Rollins > Drew/Alexei >>> junk
  12. I don't have a problem with Samardzija getting a shot in the bullpen. I do have a slight problem with Reed Johnson over Perez and Ramirez. If we wanted a platoon hitter we should have gone with Ramirez. If we wanted a good defensive OF, Perez.
  13. Koyie himself was surprised when people started referring to him as a good defensive catcher. When he was an actual prospect, everybody always said his bat (which actually profiled well at the time) would have to carry his defense.
  14. And he has a better than 50/50 shot of living to the age of 60. Getting your hair caught in a car door and being dragged to your death can strike at any time.
  15. Yeah, that snuck up on me a bit even though I'm in an auction league. There just aren't as many top tier OF as there were 5 years ago. The good news is that there's plenty of guys who aren't bad.
  16. Quade referred to Castillo as a nice catching prospect in the pregame. I think if he were getting the backup catcher gig, Quade mightve said player instead of prospect. And Mojo, stop pretending Hill is a typical backup catcher. He's bad even by that admittedly low standard.
  17. Don't go forgetting we get Garza for an extra year over what the Brewers get from Greinke.
  18. His line wasn't that bad before today. Today I'm sure sealed his fate to not make the rotation. It looks like it will come down to whether they want to take Silva or Cashner. Hmm, the young flamethrower with ace potential or the fat guy with a heart condition who gives out runs like McDonalds does cheeseburgers. Why must life saddle us with such hard decisions? You had better hope Hendry doesn't read this forum because if he does, you've just inextricably linked Carlos Silva with cheeseburgers.
  19. Yeah. He can ride the bus to and from Iowa all season long, but it's pretty likely he gets to spend the vast majority of the year with the big league club just because he's the only viable backup.
  20. Quick copy-paste job from The Cub Reporter Obviously not all of those matter anymore... Anyway, what I get from that is that DeWitt has an option left but if we try to use it during the season we'd have to expose him to waivers.
  21. I'd bet we've had scouts keeping an eye on him the last couple weeks. If we really are that down on DeWitt, he's almost certainly a better option than just handing the job to Baker.
  22. I thought we only owed him 6 mil this season, after the Mariners picked up 5.5 of his 11.5 salary? If I had to guess how this plays out, Hendry is probably trying to trade him right now but wont find a taker. He'll probably push Cashner into the pen and let Silva start a few times. Those starts wont go well, we'll cut Silva, and try to move Cashner back into the rotation but probably give him a minor arm injury in the process of stretching him back out. We'll watch Coleman get pounded for a few weeks until Cashner is ready to start pitching again. Cashner will be ineffective and an MRI will show a tear in his elbow. He'll miss the next year after Tommy John surgery, and be stuck in the pen permanently after that, as he "couldn't handle a starter's workload." On the fringes of playoff contention at about 6 games back, we'll trade for Paul Maholm for the stretch run. We wont give up too much to acquire him, but Hendry will resign him to an overly expensive contract in the offseason. Probably about 3 years, 18 mil.
  23. I don't know if Max Ramirez has options left. He may be getting taken off the 40 man if he doesn't make the team. And Jeff Baker isn't really an option if it means facing righties. We may be able to carry Davis as a 1B/3B backup and big bat off the bench.
  24. Ron is really smiting our enemies from up there. Go get em.
