  1. Butterfly effect, man. Post the lineup 1 second too late and it changes everything. Who is to say it hasn't caused a strikeout or a dropped pop fly'?
  2. Vehemently disagree. What would I do with all my spare time? Pottery? Your third grade teacher tells me you made a hell of an ashtray.
  3. Sori is really timing his hits well. I can't imagine pinch hitting Johnson for Pena was a good idea.
  4. It doesn't take much power to make a SS stand out. 18-24 HR a year (along with his high batting average) would make him a media darling.
  5. Well, you can't go all year without an extremely frustrating bad-beat like this. Glad to get it out of the way so we wont have to deal with any more like that.
  6. In any important situation, I want Starlin Castro to bat.
  7. Darwin Barney is slated to come up 3rd this inning.
  8. Put the ball in play, jog to first, repeat as desired.
  9. I could have stomached Ojeda as the back up SS for a couple of months just to delay the clock on Barney, but I think you are over estimating the importance of defence and Barney's bat if you think its about a wash between him and Baker on their side of the platoon. If you think so little of Barney why on earth are you worried about starting the clock on him? Besides which, he was up last season so he was going to burn an option anyway. Jeff Baker career vs. RHP - .244/.300/.378. He's also a about a +4 defender in the field. Barney I see as a .270/.315/.335 type, maybe a bit better if the work at camp colvin paid off. He was supposedly a plus defensive shortstop, so I'd guess he's in the +6 to +10 range at 2B. Where should I be seeing something to get upset about?
  10. So you really think Barney is our best option at 2B right now, or are you just playing devil's advocate? I am mostly upset that they brought him up at all to start the season and especially upset he is hitting second. Barney was going to be on this team at the start of the season regardless. He's the only person we've got capable of backing up Castro at SS. We could have went to Augie Ojeda, but I think everybody can agree that really doesn't seem like an upgrade. As to the question of whether I think Barney is our best option at 2B, I'm willing to say I don't know. I honestly don't see any one of Barney/Baker/DeWitt as being obviously better than the others. I'll let the Cubs try to sort it out, knowing that the difference between the best of the three and the worst of the three is probably less than a single win over a full season. I'm not happy he's batting 2nd though. If you're gonna go with a guy just because of his glove, you don't bat him at the top of the order. Since Toronto is basically already out of it, can we just trade for Aaron Hill now and call it good? They can have Barney, Baker and DeWitt. I would love to have Aaron Hill.

  12. Why the hate? Dude's worked hard to be where he is now. Even if it's for only a week or two, I think it's great that the Cubs organization is rewarding a hard offseason workout program and dramatic improvement at the plate during ST. I don't hate Barney at all. I just don't think his being even half of a platoon at 2B incrases the Cubs chances or winning a lot of ballgames, let alone him batting in the 2 spot. He is a very soft hitting great gloved SS and yes, that is Quade's fault. Still, anything to get him out of this position I am all for. Who is better? Probably every actual 2B we have in the system through AA (and DeWitt)? And probably most of the waiver wire types floating around. I think even some of the more optimistic projections for Barney well into the future has his bat as league average or worse as a 2B. Baker is probably about equal to Barney against righties on offense, and a bit worse on defense. DeWitt is a bit more impressive on offense, but is significantly worse on defense. About the only real guy in the system that might represent an immediate upgrade is Marquez Smith, and that's if and only if his defense at 2B isn't atrocious. Given his extremely limited playing time, I'm betting it is.
  13. If he isn't lobbying for the fan interference call there he's not doing his job.

  15. Right now, it's easier to project some more power to Beckham, and he walks a bit more often as well. But Castro is still physically maturing and nobody really knows where his power is going to end up. And putting up even a passable walk rate as a 20 year old in major league action gives a degree of hope in that regard too. All this while playing the more demanding defensive position (and having the tools to be a plus defender there). Beckham's more polished. Castro's got the upside. They should both have some really nice careers though.
  16. That on its own doesn't. The attitude he goes around with though... that's what pushes him over the edge.
  17. Longoria just left the game with a sore oblique.
  18. Hahaha. He just tried to barehand a ball to throw out Brad Freaking Hawpe on a routine play... Christ.
  19. I dont have a problem with it loading up. The fact I have to choose between seeing the box score, the field, and the play by play bothers the bejeezus out of me. But it loads. You can click on "Classic" at the top and it will go to last year's version. Even if that works all year, it wont next. But thanks for the heads up. I didn't realize it was an option.
