  1. The Arizona Cardinals? Until recently, the Clippers? The Golden State Warriors?
  2. From Fire Joe Morgan When you look at Ortiz's numbers for close and late they are pretty close to his overall numbers with his slugging being slightly higher. Still, I can't think of another player, possibly in history, that I would want up to bat in a game winning situation than Ortiz.
  3. Both Casey and Shelton had strong starts to the season followed by some miserable performances. Unless Casey is a strong defensive upgrade or Shelton becomes a part of a package for someone else, I'm not sure what this does for the Tigers.
  4. Without a change in management and coaching, I'm starting to think that will be the best-case scenario.
  5. Agred. Indications don't mean crap. To me this is a business bluff. He knows that Philly now has an opening at 3rd base, and so does SD, and perhaps a few other teams. IMO, all he is doing is trying to bluff his way into a more secure deal. Nothing more/nothing less. And yes, ARAM will be a CUB in 2007. I agree with post these posts. I wonder how much of it is the belief that he can get more money from a team aside besides the Cubs, and how much is the belief that with the Cubs having significant payroll open up next year Aramis and his agent are looking to get their share.
  6. Usually, the record difference won't be that high though. What happened to Clemens last year was little short of legendary. If you're referring to the best pitcher getting hosed out of a Cy Young because his W-L wasn't the eye-catching, it's happened a few times in recent years: 2005 NL Cy Young went to Carpenter (21-5, 151 ERA+), should have gone to Clemens (13-8, 221 ERA+) 2005 AL Cy Young went to Bartolo Colon (21-8, 120 ERA+), should have gone to Santana (16-7, 153 ERA+) 2004 NL Cy Young went to Clemens (18-4, 145 ERA+), should have gone to Randy Johnson (16-14, 171 ERA+) 2003 Al Cy Young went to Halladay (22-7, 145 ERA+), maybe could have gone to Pedro (14-4, 212 ERA+, but had 187 IP to Halladay's 266) 2002 AL Cy Young went to Zito (23-5, 169 ERA+), should have gone to Pedro (20-4, 196 ERA+) 2001 Al Cy Young went to Clemens (20-3, 128 ERA+), could have gone to Mays (17-13, 143 ERA+), Mussina (17-11, 142 ERA+), Garcia (18-6, 138 ERA+), or Buerhle (16-8, 140 ERA+).
  7. The man currently has a higher SLG than the following Cubs: Ronny Mabry Neifi Pierre Murton Walker Bynum D Lee (!)
  8. Derrek was playing on the other side in 2003.
  9. The Yankees aren't getting rid of A-Rod. For all his struggles this year, he still only costs the Yanks $17M/year and they know he's still the best third baseman in the game.
  10. It's Fox - they appeal to the lowest common denominator in their baseball coverage. Do like the rest of us do and, unless they bring Al Leiter back, keep the sound off when Fox is your only option.
  11. I thought about that, but figured that he's not a part of the potential firesale.
  12. He's improved upon his mediocre first half, and has an OPS over 1.100 so far in July. So what will his numbers look like at the end of the season? For reference here are his monthly OPS numbers: April: .716 May: .791 June: .801 July: 1.122 Total: .841
  13. If Morgan didn't have it out for Sandberg, I might say McCarver. The 2004 playoffs where he was openly rooting for the Yankees and Cardinals was borderline maddening. But Morgan's hatred of Sandberg is absolutely unholy.
  14. Already a discussion on this in the Transactions forum viewtopic.php?t=34002
  15. D'oh. I meant to say Drew Henson. Nick Johnson was the well-touted 1B from the Yankees farm system that has panned out well the last couple of years. Mike Caruso Mike Sirotka Carlos Pena Matt Anderson Sean Burroughs Herbert Perry
  16. If that is how you feel about a future hall of famer.. you are the dumbest person I have ever seen. Watch the personal attacks dvd...... I'd trade Maddux for just about anything, to reduce the chance that Hendry will re-sign him at the end of the year. He had a great first month of the season, but he is clearly regressing over the past three years, and the Cubs money should be better invested.
  17. Nick Johnson Jon Rauch Kurt Ainsworth Denny Neagle and I'm surprised this one hasn't been said (or I missed it): Juan Cruz.
  18. One thing I've noticed from looking at the stats is that while Z is having a typical Z-like year - ERA and WHIP almost identical to career averages - he's doing it with more walks and fewer hits. Consequently he's on pace to throw 4,000 pitches this year, 500 more than he's thrown in a season since 2003 and appraoching late-90s Randy Johnson territory. While he's the closest thing to indestructable we've seen in a while, he's still a 25 year old who's logged significant innings starting from the age of 21. Any ideas on what the reasons for his high pitch count and walk ratio have been? I only get to follow the Cubs through boxscores and internet radio when I can sneak headphones on at work, so I haven't been able to watch Z's starts and get an idea for what's different this year. My initial hunch was that his sinkers is falling out of the zone more than normal, but I'm interested to hear what others who watch his starts think.
  19. This might be a naive assumption, but I think about ERA+ in roughly the same way I think about OPS+.
  20. He has been fantastic so far yes, but to put him in the same breath as Koufax or any other pitcher who has sustained an excellent level of performance over numerous seasons. Aside from that, it's a shame that as of now the Twins are a long shot to make the playoffs. Having Santana/Liriano possibly going 4 times in a 5-game set, or 5 games in a 7-game set would be great to watch.
  21. In a way this is true, but in another way, Dusty wanted those players. Dusty wanted speed and defense and bunting and all that jazz. He got what he asked for, and now he's surprised he can't win. Don't forget veterans. Hendry has shown a preference for veterans as well, but Dusty's basic demand for them has been a significant problem.
  22. Although that was an awful defensive performance by ARod yesterday, and although his fielding numbers are down this year, I'm surprised anybody looks at the Yankees left side of the infield and believes that the defense liability is Rodriguez.
  23. Surprised noone made a "I miss Prior and Wood" comment yet. Truthfully: Bellhorn Farnsworth Hollandsworth and the rest of the Lemons
  24. Post of the day/week/month/year.
