  1. Jim looks like he has lost some weight. The Cubs must have a contract with bally total fitness or Jenny Craig, everybody is losing weight. Could be weight loss related to his angioplasty.
  2. If he had waited a week, he would have received the full $5M. Instead, he gets nothing. Classy move by Foulke.
  3. Randy Johnson, 2001 World Series: 17 1/3 IP, 9H, 3BB, 19SO, 1.04ERA, and 2 "clutch" wins (one in a must-win Game 6, and one to spell Schilling for 2 innings in Game 7) Mike Mussina, 2001 World Series: 11IP, 11H, 4BB, 14SO, 4.09ERA, no "clutch" wins Granted, none of Johnson's WS wins came in New York, so maybe Mussina has a point.........
  4. Not really... the Cubs were incompetent offensively and needed to make a splash this offseason, even if it meant overpaying. The Astros also needed an impact bat, with Bagwell's retirement and Ensberg regressing severely last year, especially after the All-Star Break. Sometimes it's worth it to overpay. Fair enough, but there were also enough offseason moves where players of equal or better talent were paid more conservative amounts to pull those two out of the top 5.
  5. ESPN analysts project the Bears 1st round pick: - Todd McShay: Greg Olsen, TE from Miami (FL) - Mel Kiper: Arron Sears, OL from Tennessee Don't really understand the McShay projection. He seemed like more of a pass-catching TE, and Desmond Clark proved his worth this year.
  6. In 2 of their 5 best offseason moves, they indicate that the team paid too much (Cubs with Soriano, Houston with Carlos Lee). Yahoo and the Sporting News are dumb.
  7. Getting Aramis at 5/75 was a vastly better signing than Soriano at 8/136.
  8. Good news. Maybe we did overreact a bit earlier this week.......
  9. Agreed. If it's something like this on the other hand, Wrigley just took a big step toward losing its charm. http://asahisports.co.jp/heatgear2.jpg
  10. There is no difference between Z and a FA if he's going after Zito money. The fact that he came up through our org doesn't matter, other than the abuse Dusty and company put on his arm. Who cares if he was our prospect? That has no impact on the current decision - other than him giving us a hometown discount, which he isn't. I'd rather have control of a guy like Weaver for 5+ years and another prospect or 2 than Z with a Zito contract. You misread my post. I'm not saying the fact that Z came up in our org should win him any additional dollars. I'm saying the odds of seeing the amount of production we get out of Z from a prospect or prospects is very slim, no matter how highly regarded they might be. The amount of production you're going to get out of a legit elite prospect per dollar far exceeds what Z gives you. Z is a stud, but if he wants to be paid like Zito, that counts against his value to a ballclub in a big way. "Going to get" and "production per dollar" are not terms a team that wants to win now should be saying.

  12. The decision to trade Z for prospects would be downright dumb. Teams pray for players in the minors to come up and display the talent and durability that Z has shown; prospects like that don't come up every year for every team. The Cubs have the financial resources to pay Z a contract that will keep him on the team, and the rest of their moves indicate they're playing to win now. FWIW the Beltran analogy has a huge flaw: the Royals didn't have the money to pay Beltran what he was going to demand as a FA, so their only choice was to trade Beltran for prospects.
  13. prospects that may never amount to nothing I'd rather have 2-3 guys who could be the low cost cornerstone to a team than one ace making near market value who blows his arm out in the near future. Aside from Z, name the last pitcher the Cubs brought up from the minors who has displayed the ability to be a cornerstone to a team? The Cubs have the financial resources to pay Z. For all the moves Hendry has made this offseason, this will be the most important.
  14. I am 100% unable to stop reading this website. If coaches count in the worst 126 poll, Dusty would be a good pick for #1, just based off the recent anger he caused fans.
  15. This thread went from one about Benson being out for the year to one about potential trade options by post #3.
  16. Becoming like Brees would be the best-case scenario for Grossman. Regardless, however he develops the Bears need to have it happen quickly. The window with this team is probably two more years.
  17. Apparently linebackers coach Bob Babich is ready to step in if Rivera heads to Dallas.
  18. Unless our female posters are voting based on looks, the biggest surprise is that Ryan right now has as many votes as Dwight, and more than Stanley.
  19. Two reasons this is true. 1) Lovie and Ron showed an unwavering faith in Rex, and that will carry over to next year. 2) The possibilities for bringing in a better QB through FA or the draft are basically zero. The McNabb rumors are nothing more than that, rumors. There was a previous question about whether the Bears should give up their #1 pick for a QB. Given who's available, and given how strongly the Bears have drafted over the past few years, the answer is no. While I agree that the QB spot will probably remain the same, I disagree with the assertion that the unwavering faith will carry over to next year. The Bears were willing to live through Rex's growing pains in his first full season, but if he's having the same troubles in his second season, I could see them easily making a change. In fact I don't think he's guaranteed the starter position. If Orton or Griese has a better camp, I think you could see a change. Griese clearly had the better preseason in 2006 and Lovie and Turner went with Grossman. I can't see another pre-season struggle by Rex causing Lovie to give Griese the starting QB job. Orton's upside is capped, he just doesn't have the talent to be anything more than a backup who can come in and avoid mistakes.

  21. The Cubs organization has shown too much of a reliance on the strikeout in recent years, even with its veterans. With someone of Z's build there doesn't appear to be much negative effect, but it has contributed to Wood taxing his arm. It's good to hear Hill understand that there's a difference between (gross simplification) getting a groundout on the second pitch and a strikeout on the fifth.
  22. Nice caption to the very up-close picture: "RICH HILL An untouchable" Also a great quote by Hill: It's great to hear, from a pitcher who relied so heavily on striking out batters in the minors, that there's value to saving pitches.
  23. Pick your favorite male Office character.
  24. Pick your favorite female Office character, keeping in mind that this is the character, not the overall asthetic appeal of the actress. Pick your favorite male Office character coming shortly.
  25. The Spring Training pictures thread is my favorite annual thread. That one can't come soon enough.
