  1. If it were "Soriano's walks", the correct grammar would be "Have" because the noun receiving the action would be "walks". Because it was written as "Soriano's lack of walks", the sentence receiving the attention is "lack of walks", which is referring collectively to the walks not taken by Soriano, making "Has" the appropriate grammar to go with a collective noun. EDIT: Bugger. Booyakashah.
  2. should be a fun rest of the season! ps - hobbling 35 year old corner outfielders with a .710 OPS shouldn't get a lot of playing time. Im going to defend Floyd on this one. The Jeremy Giambi effect is affecting Matty Murton and Cliff Floyd right now. If Floyd was promised one thing during the contract negotiations and that promise didn't come true, he should be mad. Did Murton and Floyd get busted for possession of marijuana the day their brother's signed lucrative contracts with the Yankees? It's clear Lou hasn't figured out the outfield situation yet; even the Mets announcers pointed out today that Lou has a glut of outfield players. Until Hendry figures out a plan to handle this, or until Lou lays down the law and says who of Floyd, Jones, Murton and Pagan will be starting, we should expect there to be some tensions regarding playing time.
  3. Definitely in the range of normal fluctuation. The difference between a .325 and .335 OBP is getting on base an additional 7 times in a season, or a little over one time per month.
  4. http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/2004/B06190CHN2004.htm A great game in a still hopeful 2004 that featured some notable things: - Lee going 4 for 4 with 4 singles - Prior struggling with his control and leaving after five innings - A one-batter appearance by NSBB fave, Kent Mercker (he got Scott Hatteberg to pop out to end the 8th) - 9th inning single to get the rally started by Todd Hollandsworth, notable Lemon - Superman slide for the win by Todd Walker Probably my favorite of all Cubs games I've attended.
  5. No doubt, but the question wasn't whether or not he should be hitting leadoff, but whether or not he's been a good leadoff hitter so far.
  6. Negatives: He has a total of five walks through 29 games played. The Cubs as a team have six walks out of their leadoff spot after today's game, the worst in the NL (Jimmy Rollins has walked 10 times for the Phillies for the second worst in the NL). Positives: Because he has been hitting the ball well, he's posted a .362 OBP so far, which is sixth best in the NL. For reference, in 2006 the Cubs posted a .329 OBP out of the leadoff spot, and in 2005 a .299 OBP (Thanks Dusty). Has Soriano been a good leadoff hitter?
  7. Should be easy to do. Seeing as how you'll look like a dork. Who are you? Zach Morris. http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c124/bnance82/clay.jpg It is easy for me, yes. Of course I can count over ten, so I see where it might be difficult for you. Of course I don't blame you for not listening to me. Your first time with a girl can be quite traumatic if you don't know what you're doing, so I can understand your hesitancy. pwned
  8. Between Chase Utely, Orlando Hudson, and Kelly Johnson, Theriot doesn't deserve to be in the ASG. We should be more concerned that fans will give the starting 1B nod to Pujols over Derrek.
  9. BP projects that for the $25+ million the Yankees will spend on Clemens and the luxury tax, they will get......... 1.5 incremental wins. Link
  10. That's an insane price to pay for 150 innings.
  11. BOTTOM OF THE 9TH - C. Cordero relieved J. Rauch - C. Floyd hit for C. Izturis - C. Floyd walked - D. Ward hit for N. Cotts - J. Marquis ran for C. Floyd - D. Ward singled to left, J. Marquis to second - A. Soriano flied out to right - R. Theriot singled to right, J. Marquis scored, D. Ward to third - D. Lee intentionally walked, R. Theriot to second - A. Ramirez grounded into fielder's choice, D. Ward out at home, R. Theriot to third, D. Lee to second - J. Jones grounded out to first 1 runs, 2 hits, 0 errors BOTTOM OF THE 10TH - R. Wagner relieved C. Cordero - M. Murton doubled to deep left - M. Barrett grounded out to third - H. Blanco hit for R. Dempster - H. Blanco singled to right, M. Murton to third - D. Ward singled to left, M. Murton scored, H. Blanco to second I know it ended up working out since Marquis scored from second Theriot's single, and I know we're short an offensive player since Cedeno was sent down and Guzman was brought up, but having a starting pitcher pinch run makes no sense.
  12. One way to hedge against the effects rising gas prices have on your wallet is to buy oil/gas futures, or even stock in the major oil companies.
  13. This is the last I've heard: Link
  14. And like 7 home runs. I don't think this would be a very good exchange. Let's start hitting it over the fence instead of off it. 114 XBH would be 3rd most ever. Derrek's hitting the snot out of the baseball, and sooner or later those doubles will start becoming HRs.
  15. Hoefully, but the pitching seems to be overperforming more than the hitting is underperforming.
  16. The views from the seats at Shea make up for the rest of it. I've been there a few times and haven't had a bad view yet. That said, be prepared to pony up for beer and standard ballpark food. The good thing is it's easy to get to. Just take the 7 train from Grand Central and you'll be there in 30 minutes.
  17. Put me firmly in the camp of the anti-Bondsians, but he has been unreal this year. OBP: .473 SLG: .767 OPS: 1.240 OPS+: 230 (!) AB/HR: 7.7 Kind of wish Hendry would have pursued him with some gusto this offseason.
  18. In Dusty's mind, it's not a problem if Abreu gets walked since he can steal bases. Someone like Youkilis is who Dusty would react negatively to.
  19. Cliff Floyd's gonna make a really crappy manager one day
  20. Happy birthday Bruce! Thanks for trying to bring a new mindset to the Cubs!
  21. I LOLed. Too true. OMG Z HIT JIM EDMONDS AND THEN YELLED!!!! WHAT A GAMER!!!! Oh man...the reminds me of my favorite Prior moment. Remember when he hit Bonds and Bonds was all "WTF was that?" Prior was like "Nothing, I just hit you b*tch." And Bonds was all "Ow," and Prior was all "Yea, I know, I'm Mark Prior." What a kickass Mark Prior moment that has been completely forgotten because he got hurt...but would be talked about like every 2 minutes if he was healthy. The moment that turned him into my favorite player until 2006.
  22. I don't agree with that. The Cubs this year are built to be a heavy slugging team that hopes to be middle of the pack in OBP. Their strength is their slugging-they just hope that their OBP is not a huge detriment. So it's problem of design and not execution.
  23. Believe it was in Page2's most overpaid player's list.
  24. League-wide, slugging is below last year's full-season numbers. NL 2007: .386 NL 2006 (full-season): .427 As for the Cubs themselves, we have 26 XBH vs our opponents 27. No reason for alarm right now.
  25. Could be that he's dissatisfied with two of his three starts so far. Or that he casually mentioned it to Lou, who shot it down. Whatever the reason, it's a non-issue.
