  1. Some of the advantages Hill has against the Reds stem from the fact that he's tough against LH hitters, namely Griffey and Dunn, which is true for Lilly. As long as Lilly's hitting his spots, the Cubs shouldn't be the ones disadvantaged today.
  2. 4 games in and he's looked good. IP Pitches Strikes H BB SO ERA WHIP 4.0 44 33 1 1 7 0.00 0.50 He had a good April last year before unraveling in May, but let's hope he keeps up his performance this year.
  3. Until Baseball Reference starts keeping stats measuring heart, hustle, grit, moxie, spunk, tenacity, fortitude, and other Jeter and Erstad-esque intangibles, it will always be a subpar website.
  4. If Santana agrees to a trade. One of the stipulations in his current contract is that a top 3 finish in the Cy Young voting for 2006 or 2007 gives him full NTC privileges for 2007-08. If the Twins could convince Santana to agree to a trade, it lessens the probability that he ends up on the Yankees that year. Like Jazz said, they should expect to get a prospect haul, and the Cashman has reprioritized the Yankees farm system. He wouldn't deplete his farm system for one starting pitcher.
  5. Hank White is spanish for The Nino
  6. I wouldn't think so. Zito's contract was a reflection of the high-priced market for starting pitching, not the driver of it. Zambrano will get well-paid (hopefully from the Cubs) regardless of Zito's performance.
  7. Mesa has better weather and better facilities. Who would be in a rush to get to Iowa?
  8. QFT, Seconded, +1, or whatever the kids are saying these days
  9. and Yankee Stadium's 1970's "upgrades" made it somewhat of an eyesore. It totally lacks any "old time" charm This would be my prediction for what happens to Wrigley going forward. It remains in its current location and retains its defining features - ivy over red brick, the scoreboard - but begins to look like other parks. Renovations would put in more luxury boxes, more advertising in the park, restaurants and games around the walkways, more priority seating similar to the Budweiser right field roof in Fenway, etc.
  10. The blue alternates reminded me enough of the blue uni's from the 80s that I liked them. http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nl/chicubs/Jdavischi.JPG
  11. what? era+ from '03-'05 123 227 (227???!!!!) 181 That's a pretty poor stat to judge a reliever. Even so, he had three good years as a "closer" but what does that mean? I think it means that he had established himself as a very good relief pitcher and was expected to continue his high performance. His struggles over the past year +2 days have been surprising.
  12. Very true. The speed on his fastball creeps up and it stays up in the zone instead of sinking. Z partially compensated for his increase in walks last year with an increase in K's. His ERA measured from his peripherals has been relatively consistent (3.80 in 2004, 3.90 in 2005, 4.03 in 2006). If he keeps his fastball down and approaches his HR totals from 2003-04, he'll be fine.
  13. I'm tempted to go through UMFan's predictions to see if his total wins and losses equal each other.
  14. Cubs - Z: pitching, hitting, never pinch-running, and this week signing a new contract - Derrek: healthy for a full season - Murton: getting more than 400 PAs - Rich Hill: continuing his 2nd half performance from last year - Not having to watch the following people play for the Cubs: Pierre, Grissom, Neifi, Macias, Bynum, Mabry, Jerome Williams, or Glendon (although we all wish him the best with his health) - Dempster regaining his form on the field and being an entertaining idiot off the field - Aramis and Soriano: 80 HRs between them Non-Cubs - Santana, Dice-K, Joe Nathan, Papelbon, Francisco Rodriguez, Halladay, and other dominating pitching the Cubs won't face - The Cardinals 2-5 starters - Maddux pitching in San Diego - The possibility that with Podsednik and Erstad hitting in front of him, Jermaine Dye could have an OPS above 1.000 and ~100 RBI (a 2005 Derrek Lee season) - The possibility that Bonds breaks Aaron's HR record on the road, and gets showered with boos from 50,000 fans
  15. Heh...fixed, according to Joe Morgan-logic. I'm not gonna say all booing is good...and of course any kind of a racist threat or insult is inexcusable...but I don't get why booing is so often automatically equated with "racist fans" if the guy getting booed isn't white. Like everyone who boos is a racist. Derrek's point was that Jones received racist hate mail during last season, not that the booing at Wrigley was racist.
  16. The difference lately is that the booing has been occuring more often and appears to have become more nasty. Given the performance of last year's team, the first should be expected. But no one can justify a fan whipping a baseball at Jacque Jones while he stands in the field. It was one isolated incident, but one that stands out when thinking about how the attitudes of Cubs fans have changed.
  17. Sportsbooks in Vegas had them at 4:1 and 5:1 a week ago. 16:1 sounds closer to what it should be.
  18. This is a little old, February 25th, but might be what you're looking for. Link
  19. Except that many teams, including the Bears, went to a 2-back system this year. If the Bears feel confident that Benson can handle a full workload, or that Peterson/random pickup can spell Benson enough to keep him fresh for 16 games, getting the draft picks was worth losing Jones.
  20. I agree. These are the numbers I would go by. Right...... Cuse your point about how or why you would use SB success rate to determine whether a runner should be sent is valid. I'm not sure the SB success rate would be used to base future decisions on, but is used as a quick-and-dirty method to evaluate whether past decisions at stolen bases were beneficial as a whole.
  21. These guys beg to differ I stand corrected. http://stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com/images/2007/03/02/uqiJmlRY.jpg Brendan Ryan looks like Oscar the Grouch. http://www.themanwhofellasleep.com/oscar.jpg
  22. We have hands down the ugliest team in the majors.
  23. Yeah. He came into camp last year with a bit of scruff.
  24. Has to be some special store for speed skaters and power squatters.
  25. As of right now, no Bernie Williams on the Yanks.
