  1. I think you're drastically underestimating how desperately they need help in the starting rotation, the bullpen and the outfield. Fill those needs with a player each (Wood, Aardsma or ahealthy Williamson, Jones) plus Aramis and that's definitely an offer the Yankees would be foolish to not at least think over. They're a competitive team with a real chance to win, as usual. Up until this point, A-Rod has the perception, unfairly, that he's not someone who is going to push them to another WS crown. I understand how bad their rotation is - I live in New York, work with a load of Yankees fans, and have Yankees news thrown at me everywhere I go. I think we need to keep in mind three things though: 1) The Yankees not going to jump at any starter we offer who has had injury problems (like NTC Wood or Prior), 2) There will be other teams looking to unload starting pitching at the trade deadline and 3) As much as Yankees fans believe that A-Rod is not "clutch" or "a winner," they still understand that he's hands-down the best third basemen in the game. If the Yankees make a move for starting pitching during the season they're going to go after durable starting pitchers and won't give up their best offensive player.
  2. Completely agree. And I might be mistaken, but didn't Walker take a paycut to join the Cubs? I think the fact that Hendry was actively looking to dump Walker, is almost as much of a sign that he has no idea what he's doing as the Neifi resignings. Additionally I think the fact that many teams had a shot to get Walker and passed is a sign that many MLB GMs aren't too bright either.
  3. Considering the Yankees only have ~8% of their payroll allocated to A-Rod (estimate, they're picking up around ~$16M/year on a $200M payroll), there's virtually no chance that the they trade him. The Cubs would have to offer something along the lines of Zambrano+Jones+pitching prospect for the Yankees to even blink at any Cubs offers.
  4. He got completely outcoached by both Mike Brown and Pat Riley. I can't imagine the players are particularly thrilled with him right now.
  5. Ditto. I've never seen an umpire so blatantly stretch the strike zone. That being said I hope he has a quick and full recovery.
  6. Byebye 75 HR season for Pujols.
  7. With no walks and a 43/16 strike/ball split it sounds like he was locating his pitches well.
  8. Yeah but Barrett punched one of the most despised guys in the majors.
  9. I was asking if he was an "intelligent player". I'm not looking for ACT/SAT/IQ scores or anything of the sort. Fair point. I will say that you don't have to have been an intelligent player to be a good coach either.
  10. FWIW you don't really need to be intelligent to be a good manager, or a good player for that matter.
  11. Given that Furcal would have played 81 games a year in Wrigleyville, with many day games, it's not a bad clause for Hendry to try to get into the contract.
  12. The grass being mowed explains why groundball pitcher Z was so upset recently.
  13. The big difference between Jones and Aramis/Pierre is that a .317 OBP and near .500 SLG is what fans should expect out of Jones, while Aramis and Pierre are playing below the level they should be at. If .317/.500 out of RF is a problem, it's Hendry's fault (who unfortunately is a huge part of the problem).
  14. And Henry Blanco for 10 games. And Dusty will still give innings to Bynum.
  15. The argument that Womack is better than Neifi could be applied to 99% of the major league infielders playing today. It is true that he is better than Neifi, but that shouldn't be a reason that he's on the team.
  16. His speed topped out at 90. Link
  17. U.S. federal laws take precedence over those of a sports organization.
  18. ok Seriously, what are you talking about with the title of this thread? Yeah but if we had Farns someone could make a photoshop poster of Barret and Farns entitled "Bad Boyz". They could have been the battery in assault & battery.
  19. Isn't there speculation that Maris and his contemporaries were on amphetamines? Players have been skirting the rules since the rules were made, I don't really see the point in getting so upset at Bonds, and I don't like him one bit. So cheating is okay in your book? No, the point is that getting so upset at Bonds because he cheated to break records that were set by people who might have cheated themselves is a bit silly. There are some differences between Bonds and many of the other cheaters: 1. Some of the other cheaters showed an ounce of remorse after getting caught (Palmeiro being the glaring exception) 2. None of the other cheaters took the attitude that they are being victimized as much as Bonds has 3. None of the other cheaters had a "reality" show disguise a PR stunt 4. Out of all the suspected cheaters, Bonds has probably been the biggest jerk/prima donna in the majors for a long time Throw those four items together and the fans anger at Bonds is a little more understandable.
  20. All in all, that was infuriating to read. Rusch should get the next start. Who would you rather have make that start? Someone else that has the slightest hope for improvement. Williams, Hill, Guzman, Ryu, etc. It talks about Rusch earning it with 9 K's and ignores that he gave up 7 baserunners, 4 runs, and 2 home runs in 4 innings. He's been awful for quite a while now, but since he can't get demoted he sticks around until we give him another undeserved shot at the rotation. And then there was the nonsense about Wuertz "just not being 'there'". Williams is pitching horribly down there, and I think he is down there until he adjusts his attitude as well. The Cubs weren't happy with him in spring training IIRC. As for the other three, if it is the Cubs fault Corey Patterson played so terribly because they rushed him to the big leagues, then why would we want them to rush Hill, Guzman and Ryu? I think it's very clear those three have a lot to work on before they are ready for the big leagues. Fair point. I think the only difference would be the mindset that management and the fans take toward having any one or all of those three up this season. The mindset should be that they would be called up to get experience and develop, not to contribute up to a full level of expectations.
  21. Unless he hit the HR in the 2nd-7th innings, half of the LA fans wouldn't have been there. /slight dig I would have loved to seen him do it in Philadelphia (vicious fans..... once cheered when Michael Irvin broke his neck on the Philly turf) or if possible at an inter-league game at Yankee Stadium.
  22. Mark Grace and Jose Canseco can pitch in relief. Jose Canseco would best fit the injury profile of our regular starters.
  23. Because no team with the payroll the size of ours should have Womack on the 25-man roster. It's not so much Womack vs the other options on the bench, as how bad our roster is right now.
  24. At one point our infield was Lee, Walker, Nomar, and Ramirez.
  25. True, but it's hard to argue that anyone who got into the 300 win club in the modern era was anything less than a great pitcher for a lengthy period of time. The "wins are overrated argument" comes into play if someone mentions that "because pitcher A didn't get 300 wins, he doesn't deserve to be in the HOF," which is often the argument against Blyleven in the HOF.
