  1. The point isn't whether he can "turn it around" because I have no doubt in my mind that Duncan can get him to be as effective as he can be at this point. The point is that even at his best, Ponson is nowhere near the pitcher Anthony Reyes has the potential to be.
  2. I'm glad everyone is so into this completely ludicrous hypothetical scenario.
  3. My bad.
  4. Ryan Hollins cracking the second round!! I can't tell you how much I hate that mock. Bulls taking Morrison 2nd wouldn't be terrible, but O'Bryant (should stay another year) going 10th to the rockets and McRoberts being a lottery pick? No Joachim Noah?
  5. Very true. As bad an idea as this sounds, its (right now) their best option.
  6. Well then, that makes all the difference in the world! Actually I was so incredulous from reading the article I was in a hurry to post and mixed it up. Oh well. Maybe Juan will finally play up to his potential. And maybe Jessica Alba will be in my room when I go home tonight.
  7. Sweet. Then I can join. BTW - IMB, I will win because I have all PUJOLS.
  8. http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/sports/stories.nsf/cardinals/story/9CA6780F8E7281FF8625713E0026D099?OpenDocument Back to the original wft-ness of this thread, LaRussa is indeed batting Encarnacion and his career OBP of .316 second because of "danger". He likes a guy who brings "danger" to the two hole. I love vague baseball terms.
  9. I have no idea, but if I was going to make a guess I'd say: Carp: 18-5, 3.20 era, 1.20 whip. I think he'll be in position to win as many games as last year, but the bullpen will blow a few more of them than in '05. D-Lee; .305, .390, .560, 40 homeruns, and more RBI's than last year.
  10. It looks a lot different from GAB on the outside. I love the red brick facade and Iron trusses.
  11. A few observations: 1 - Wrigley desperately needs a garage. Good idea Trib Co. 2 - If the Nationals cop the Wrigley look, I'd be pissed if I was a Cubs fan.
  12. Jocketty in a conversation with a St. Louis area sports radio host said he plans to trade for a starting second baseman. Look out Vance.
  13. Even though god Carpenter is the only starter we have signed through next year, I do this trade but try to offer Marquis instead.
  14. I can't see Crean. After Self left he told Illinois he wanted to be at Marquette for the long haul. Especially now that they are in the premier basketball conference. Does he have any ties to IU?
  15. I have resigned myself to ambivalent acceptance. Like I said, there are worse problems to have. I don't have much faith in Ponson, so I think Reyes will be up sooner than later. I just hope it doesn't take long. We don't have the offense (or defense for that matter) to be able to withstand a long stretch of incompetence from Ponson like we may have had the last two years.
  16. But...but...but... He went to two world series in 7 years! That means something right? Never mind he played for the Yankees. They were there because of him. The Marlins made it because of Alex Gonzalez, the White Sox because of Juan Uribe, the Angels because of Adam Kennedy, the Diamondbacks because of Tony Womack, and the Red Sox because of Orlando Cabrera.
  17. -----> Disappointed. I wanted him to have a spring like last year and make it almost impossible to send him down. Oh well. There are worse problems to have in ST.
  18. I was better in less than a week. Then again I basically crashed and slept the whole time. He has been exerting himself.
  19. Not as much as I was, but I'd still prefer Reyes by far. Ponson has been effective in ST so far in putting up zeros and eating some innings, but when given a choice between someone strikes out a batter an inning and Ponson, I'm taking the other guy. It's one thing to pitch to contact, but Ponson so far hasn't shown much ability to make anyone swing and miss ever. More than anything I'm disappointed in this farcical competition. Tony and Duncan have tried to trade for Ponson in the past because he is the typical Duncan reclamation project (marginal to good stuff but tried to overthrow too much then Duncan gets them to use their sinker almost exclusively. People think they are good because of their high innings and win totals, but crap k rates, high whip, and poor opp avg ensue). This method works great when the project is a guy with great stuff like Carp and Darryl Kile, but when it is a Kent Bottenfield, Garrett Stephenson, Dustin Hermanson, or Brett Tomko they just suck but some people don't realize it. This is why I think watching Jason Marquis' developement has been interesting. He basically has the ability to go either way. He has great velocity but no offspeed/strike out pitch. If he developes one he could be a top of the rotation guy, if not he'll just be another sinkerballer inning eater. When they finally got Ponson they basically all but gave him the spot by making Reyes throw a new pitch to live hitting. His (Reyes) st numbers are inflated because of this and he never got a fair shake at a rotation spot. If having a two seamer was so essential to his big league success and they were really planning on there being a competition this spring don't you think they might have mentioned this at some point in the last 2 spring trainings or when he was up with the club last year? Don't get me wrong, I think Duncan is a good pitching coach, I just don't always agree with his methods.
  20. The parts of that article Vance would enjoy: I know the man is fat, but that is pretty insensitive to have in a millions plus circulation paper.
