  1. yet soriano leads off while Vlad hits runners in from his middle of the order position. hmmm
  2. I don't know or care whether leadoff is a position or not as that is semantics. I do know you must have capable on base players at the top & we don't have that. Roberts is clearly one of the best in the game & I feel would provide a huge boost to a struggling lineup. With Roberts & Fuko at the top & Soriano 3rd he would inevitably see a lot of fastballs & he is a very good fastball hitter. Would it catapult the cubs into the series? No idea, but it certainly would not hurt & would help our chances considerably IMO. Does this team have holes at SS, CF, #2 pitcher & possibly closer? Yes. Does it have an issue on offense? Yes. I feel DeRosa is a utility player & a very good one at that. Putting him into that role helps this team IMO w/ Roberts at 2B. I never said Soriano has performed at a .100 pace during his Cub tenure, but I do feel he has certainly underachieved. This is a message board & I'm allowed to give opinions. I give them & you don't like them. That doesn't mean I cannot post. I get tired of hearing yours & other's tired opinions as well but you don't see me belittling them or piling on. Just read it, disagree & move on.
  3. so...you guys that are defending soriano are happy we don't have roberts & have no problem w/ paying soriano $126 mill over the next 7 yrs?
  4. No. Do you?
  5. broken record? you mean soriano's sub .100 batting average? that's the broken record. His total lack of plate discipline & fuko's incredible patience at the plate are a perfect example of contrast. So I'm the only one that is sick of Soriano? Give me a break. If you look at each poster on this board, most post the same stuff day after day.
  6. I look dumb? That's your opinion. I think you look dumb that you don't think he is. He didn't earn the money last year either. 130 strikeouts & 20 steals w/ a low OBP for a leadoff hitter making $18 mill/yr doesn't do it for me. Sorry. I doubt very many cub fans have much confidence at all that he will be a high level player on the back end of that contract let alone now.
  7. Before last year, DeRo was a career utility player. Now, he is a utility player that has a heart condition. Look, DeRo is a great guy, a great teammate & a pretty good player that brings a lot of position flexibility, leadership & obp/offense to this club. On other flipside, Soriano appears to be the biggest bust & contract albatross since post-steroid Sammy. We now are finding out why one Jim Hendry was obsessing after Brian Roberts. We do not have a leadoff hitter, a natural 2B. DeRo would be perfect in a first off the bench utility role & a guy that could start 2-3 times/wk to keep everyone fresh w/ all of the Wrigley day games. I feel that Jim had a window of opportunity early in the offseason to get it done...didn't bid aggressively until later & then the O's had a change of heart. We have many holes on this team but this one will haunt us all year...IMO.
  8. because he is another non-pitching strikeout artist.
  9. That book hasn't made it's way to the Cubs clubhouse yet...
  10. The unflattering playoff performance should have told you that changes were needed. We made one real change in adding fuko & are batting him out of position. There are multiple holes on this team & it is obvious that Hendry does not know how to put the parts together to make a strong team. I was not counting on soto being yet another hole but watching kendall throw out every cub runner & soto being run on at will was ironic.
  11. As I know others that make the counterpoint. It's humorous as to their points as well. It's not just Riot...it's the Riot/Soriano combo at the top. Soriano needs dropped. Fuko needs moved up. Hell, with DLee no longer hitting for power, some feel maybe he could be a leadoff hitter w/ his strong OBP.
  12. "I must have missed something...are there seriously people panicing over the first game? After last year's first game I thought this one was outstanding....we'll win games and lose games all year...Monday was just one of them." No...we just have the luxury of watching last year as well so there is plenty of evidence to back up the inferences taken from Monday's dreadful 1-2 performance.
  13. yeah...i am still going on about this. What's your point? It is really obvious this is a missing link in the offense. The top two positions in our lineup are dreadful in terms of plate discipline/getting on base. Fuko will be there at some point & Soriano will drop to 5th.
  14. I feel very confident that he would have found a way to get on base & even one time might have been enough to get a win. I say this based on gut feeling as well as historical stats. It is very clear that Roberts is much better than Theriot & based on on base percentages alone, he is also far better in the top position than Soriano. I know Hendry gave it the old college try but I think our failure to land this critical need will be one of the main reasons the Cubs will go no further than last year...if even that far.
  15. Theriot + Soriano 0-10, no walks & 4 k's. Brian Roberts 2 hits & 2 walks...on base 4 times. Our inabililty to land Roberts early in the offseason when we had a chance will haunt the Cubs all year. At this point our best leadoff option is fuko who led the spring in walks. Who bats second is anyone's guess but Soriano should be in the 5-hole.
  16. where is theriot today & what happened to fuko hitting second today?
  17. I agree he should have given them an ultimatum, I also think he already knew their answer...that they would just hang onto him. I think the cubs want him much worse than the O's want to move him & that's the problem. Beyond that, the cubs don't see a similar impact move in terms of upgrading the lineup from an offensive standpoint otherwise they would have done it some time ago.
  18. I realize this isn't popular on this particular website but two things have been very clear this offseason. Cubs brass are bent on getting soriano & his free swinging ways out of the leadoff spot & DeRosa into a utility position. Most thought it was a Brian Roberts fetish but it now appears to be more than that. Felipe is a fast little devil & that seems to be hip around the league right now w/ Bourne, Taveras & the like dotting the 1-hole. The Cub may be making a similar move soon in Lopez.
  19. it sounds to me like Lou has accepted that Brian Roberts will not be coming. He decided to move soriano out of leadoff spot whether we get roberts or not...thus the theriot experiment. During the game today he mentioned fuko may be moved to the 2-hole. Speculation has ensued in the media that fuko may also be given a shot at leadoff. It appears the days of soriano hitting in the first two spots are done. I would guess he'll hit 3rd although anywhere between 3rd & 5th is possible. If we get roberts & hit fuko second, I think our offense will be seriously upgraded & our bench will be very strong as well. I have been impressed w/ both cedeno & patterson off the bench as well due to their speed & flexibility. I hope we keep at least one of them if the roberts deal happens. Either way, it looks like fuko will be in the top two spots w/ either roberts or theriot being the other one.
  20. leadoff is a hole for the cubs. Before theriot moved into the spot & after. Roberts is one of the best in the game.
  21. broken record? how about the one that sang he wouldn't hit leadoff if he came here & we don't need roberts because leadoff isn't a position? those are the broken records i got tired of hearing.
  22. for those still confused as to the motivation for the cubs pursuit of leadoff man brian roberts...rotoworld is reporting that lou plans to bat theriot first, soriano second & fuko fifth. Oh...and brian roberts just got his 7th steal to lead the spring trainers. Hendry/lou want roberts for his leadoff skills...not for a 2B upgrade. They evidently aren't worried about soriano's wobbly kneed approach to hitting in spots other than leadoff.
  23. like everyone else? how do you know everyone doesn't have you on ignore? roberts is designed to get on base. soriano swings to drive people in. Get it? The stats point it out & so does the article posted earlier today. Funny how you don't answer my question. Why are they going after roberts? because they so desparately want a #2 hitter? Yeah...that's it.
